Over to you...

Your mission is to construct a shot, to express your given theme, making use of visual codes.

You must be able to explain your shot type, denotation and connotation; also whether your signifier is iconic, indexical, symbolic or metasymbolic!

Basic Shot Transitions

• Cut• Fade• Dissolve• Wipe

Cut

A basic cut is when the scene moves from one shot to another immediately.

When I click on this slide it will cut to the next.

Fade

This transition is when the image fades

away gradually.

You can fade to black: often used to signal the end of a day. Or fade to white which is used when a softer effect is required. At the beginning of a dream sequence for example.

Dissolve

A dissolve is where one image dissolves

into another.

This is used rarely in modern film making,

but can be seen often in 50s and 60s films.

Wipes

A wipe is when one image is wiped away to

be replaced by another. Wipes can happen

in a variety of directions.

Wipes became popular in the 70s and 80s.

They were used extensively in the original

star wars movie.

The tip of the iceberg

You have been introduced to the basics.

There are a lot of other techniques and

effects that you will encounter.
