ERSC 2P17 - Library Assignment

Date and Location: Tuesday, October 7, 2- 5 p.m. Learning Commons Classroom A This assignment will serve to familiarize you with the services available in the James A. Gibson Library to assist you in locating resources relevant to Earth Sciences. Each student enrolled in ERSC/GEOG 2P17 must select one Earth Science related topic. A list of sample topics relevant to the Geology of Ontario are listed below, but feel free to pick something that interests you. To complete this task you are to use the various Earth Science/geology databases, available on-line through the James A. Gibson and Map Libraries. Remember to only search for results since 1990. Ian Gordon, Earth Sciences Librarian, Colleen Beard, Head, Map, Data & GIS Library, and Heather Whipple, Liaison Librarian for Geography & Data Librarian will provide you with an overview of how to locate resources, either physically of electronically, necessary to complete this assignment, The report for your library assignment will consist of a one page, single-sided, single-spaced ‘information’ sheet on your selected topic and must contain the following (see the sample layout attached):

1) A location map of the feature described; 2) A definition/description of the topic chosen, highlighting - what it is, where it

is; 3) Significance to earth science – why it is important; 4) A listing of two recent references (post 1990) you found on the topic plus a

copy of the first page of each article cited. 5) Also include in your report:

A) The URL for the Brock Library Earth Sciences Research Guide

B) Two sample screen shots of your searches from two different data bases (Copied and pasted into your word document)

C) A list of the keywords on which you searched.
