Deck Drainage Systems For Your Deck or Porch- What Is It? (con’t)
Water drainage systems divert water runoff on your deck or porch so you can
use the space beneath. By doing so, you can actually double the size of your
outdoor living space.
Water drainage system products vary by manufacturer. Some are only
installed by local contractors whereas others are specially designed and
constructed for the DIYer.
Some systems are composed of
a synthetic waterproof
membrane that is installed
directly over the decking
material.

There are also decking products that divert
rain and water from snow and ice away from
your deck and are actually stronger than
conventional joists.
Other drainage systems are constructed with
ready-made drop ceilings.
Some systems are only attached to the bottom
of the deck frame, while others are invisible like
the DekDrain® system (at right).
One of the more innovative designs is one where the synthetic panels are
attached to the tops of the joists thereby giving you not only excellent drainage
but also joist protection as well.

Each has its advantages and disadvantages.
For instance, those that attach directly to the bottom of the joists may inhibit
the installation of finished ceilings. Others may require more extensive
construction experience to install or require caulking and other more tedious
tasks.
It is wise to not only select a top
quality product but also choose one
(especially if it’s a DIY project) that is
easy to install.

In this example, specially design rubber membrane channels are
installed between the joists. They automatically drain toward the
beam where water is diverted into a gutter.
An added benefit is that the channels also protect the joists.

For cantilevered decks or porches, make sure there is a system to allow water
to flow back into the water diversion system as shown in the photo above. Not
all systems provide for differently designed decks so make sure the system you
choose will perform well on your deck or porch
