Objective

• Primary- This study is aimed at studying the effect of previous schooling on academic performance of MBBS students in AIIMS Patna.• Secondary-To study the difference in effect of previous

schooling on present academic performance of male and female students AIIMS Patna.

IntroductionThe years that we spend in school are not merely time spent in

learning and gaining knowledge but also serve as a foundation to achieve the goals in life which we strive for .

The basic traits of our personality are formed during school days.

Through this study we are aiming to find out various aspects of previous schooling like methodology of teaching ,language medium used for teaching , regularity in school are having any impact on academic performance of the students in MBBS.

There is no baseline value to compare the data and since we could not find any similar study done in past so we chose this topic for our research.

No previous similar epidemiological study was found This study was conducted to evaluate effects of previous schooling on academic performance of AIIMS Patna students.

Materials and MethodsStudy design : Cross sectional studyStudy population : AIIMS MBBS Student Selection criteria: Inclusion criteria-MBBS 2012 and 2013 batch students as they

have given their first professional exam, both male and female student

Exclusion criteria-MBBS 2014 batch were excluded as they have not given their first professional exam

Study period: 24th May to 2nd June

Sample size• To find out the sample size, a pilot study was done on 30 randomly selected

students :20 males and 10 females to find out the prevalence• Out of the 20 males, 10 were from 2013 batch and 10 were from 2012 batch. Out of

the 10 females , 5 were from 2013 batch and 5 from 2012 batch.• From the pilot study, prevalence came out to be 47%,i.e., 47% students have had an

impact of previous schooling on their present academic performance in AIIMS Patna. Sample size = Z2*PR*Q E2

Z=1.96 Q=100-PR PR= 47 Q= 100-47=53 E = ERROR =5%of PR Ideally sample size comes to be 1732 . But we have selected 135 MBBS students

for study.

procedure

All students were distributed a uniform pre-tested , pre-designed , semi-structured questionnaire.

It was a self-administered questionnaire. Purpose of study was informed by investigators. The questionnaire was distributed to the students during their

working hours in the college and complete responses were collected on the spot.

Confidentiality of the students was maintained as no names were requested from the students.

All the 6 investigators were present in the classroom for any clarification.

academic performance in 1st professional

• Totals students were further divided according to batch and sex.

Analysis

• Statistical analysis was done on SPSS software.

• Data was tabulated and analyzed and result is expressed in number and percentage.

Majority of the students who have done their 12th from ISC and CBSE board don’t have any problem in expressing themselves.

Majority of the males faced difficulty in expressing themselves verbally in exams whereas majority of females did not have any difficulty in expressing themselves.

None of the females obtained marks below 50% whereas few males did obtained marks below 50% in first professional

SUMMARY

All students who did their 12th in regional language faced problem in expressing themselves both theoretically and verbally

Maximum students of Hindi medium obtained marks between 50-60% whereas those who were from English medium majority of them obtained marks between 60-70%

Only 10% of the students who were from Hindi medium obtained more than 70% marks whereas 15.3% of the students from English medium obtained more than 70% marks

All the students who did their 12th in regional language obtained marks between 50-60%

Majority of the students who have done their 12th from ISC and CBSE board don’t have any problem in expressing themselves.

Majority of the students who have done their 12th from state board face problem in expressing themselves verbally.

About 10% of the students who have done their 12th from state board face problem in expressing themselves both verbally and theoretically.

Majority of the students who have done their 12th from CBSE and ISC board obtained marks between 60-70%

Majority of the students who have done their 12th from state board obtained marks between 50-60%

Those students who were not focused towards coaching in class 12TH performed better than those who were focused towards coaching

Most of the students obtained more than 90% marks in class 10th and more than 80% marks in class 12th .

Since the mode of teaching in previous school of majority students was blackboard method ,hence they prefer mode of teaching in AIIMS also by same .

Most of the students did not have a communication problem.

CONCLUSIONStudents who did their 12th from CBSE board in English medium , were regular in school and were less focused towards coaching performed better in first professional exam and were able to express themselves better.

Students who did their 12th from state board in regional language, were irregular in school and were more focused towards coaching could not perform well in first professional exam and were unable to express themselves satisfactorily
