St. Cyril and Methodius

are Byzantine diplomats, Christian missionaries and creators of the Glagolitic

alphabet. They are known as Thessaloniki brothers.

Methodius is the biggest and Constantine/Cyril/ is

the youngest in the family of seven sons.

During his initial education in Thessaloniki

Constantine-Cyril shows a tendency to

philosophy and poetry.

In 843, Constantine-Cyril began to study in school Magnaur.

Constantine was a fluent speaker of Old Slavonic, Greek, Latin,

Hebrew and had a basic knowledge of Syriac and

Arabic.He probably acquired knowledge on Khazars, Persian, German and

other languages.

855 AD Constantine-Cyril, with his brother Methodius` help

created the Glagolitic

alphabet in the monastery "St.

Polyhron" in Asia Minor.

In 886g. disciples of Cyril and Methodius

Kliment, Naum, Sava, Gorazd and

Angelarius came to Bulgaria to spread

the slavonic alphabet.

Two schools were established in Pliska

and Ohrid. Over 3500 priests and

teachers were qualified.

Ciryl and Methodius were

exalted as aposttols and

were canonized as saints for the translation and

dissemination of the Bible into Old

Slavonic language and

spreading Christianity.

Cyril and MethodiusCreated alphabet and

translated religious books.

Protected the right of people to glorify God in

their own language.Have historical

significance for the formation of the Bulgarian nation.

For the first time a celebration St. St.

Cyril and Methodius was organized.

on May 11, 1851 in the eparchy school "St. St. Cyril and Methodius

"in Plovdiv on the initiative of Nayden

Guerov - writer, linguist and folklorist.

Written for the feastANTHEM OF ST.ST.CYRIL AND METHODIUS is

one of the most popular songs in Bulgaria

Stoyan Mihaylovski wrote the poem in 1892

Lyubomir Pipkov wrote the music in 1901

In 1916 the Gregorian calendar was established in

Bulgaria.The day of St. St. Cyril

and Methodius, celebrated by the

Bulgarian Orthodox Church on May 11th, was changed to May

24th .

May 24th has been celebrated as a Natoinal Day of

Bulgarian Education and

Culture and Slavonic Letters

since 1968.

May 24 is the Day of literature, education,

culture, spiritual rising, striving for

perfection through science

and culture.

On this bright day pupils and

teachers make wreaths and garlands of

peonies and other spring flowers and decorate schools.

School “St. Kliment Ohridski” is decorated with wreaths in honour of 24th May.

Every year in honour of the feast pupils draw pictures and post cards, write poems and compositions about
