50 years ago, this church building was under construction on a bare land site at the edge of Northfield.

Where we came from – a brief history1855 – First Methodist services held at the
Edmund Larkin home south of Northfield1856 – Services in a school house at the current
location of the UCC Church.1859 – the first Methodist Church building in
Northfield on 6th Street between Union and College.
1874 – Land purchased at Washington and Third Streets and a parsonage built.
1877 – New Church at Washington and Third Streets – basement used.
1882 – Upper level finished and pipe organ added.

1921 – Parish House purchased at Third Street between Winona and College. (From Dr. Fred B. Hill and Deborah Sayles-Hill for $35,000)
1924 – Old Church was remodeled and moved to Third and Winona.
1946 – Old parsonage (from 1870’s) sold.1951 – New Parsonage house built at Third and
College Streets.1957 – A Giant Leap of Faith was initiated – a
building committee was appointed.1961 – Building Fund balance was $32,000.1962 – Building Fund grows to $49,000.1963 – Option to sell the Third Street properties
to Carleton College for $62,000.

move forward with the new Church19.234 acres purchased from Alice & Ralph
Grosser for $16,900.April 25, 1965 – Ground breaking ceremonySeptember 1, 1965 – Parsonage completeNovember 21, 1965 – Cornerstone laid with a
time capsuleJune 12, 1966 – First service in the new Church.
Starts in old Church and processes to new Church to complete the service.
October 23, 1966 – The new Church is Consecrated
