like the hypocrites. For they love to standand pray in the synagogues and at thestreet corner, that they may be seen byothers. Truly, I tell you, they have receivedtheir reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door

Matthew 6:5-13

“…and pray to your Father who is insecret. And your Father who sees insecret will reward you. 7 “And when you pray, do not heap upempty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard for theirmany words. 8 Do not be like them, for

Matthew 6:5-13

“your Father knows what you need beforeyou ask him. 9 Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Seeking the Face of GodUsing the Ancient Prayer

Jesus Gave Us

“Your Will Be Done”The Gospel of Matthew 6:5-14

1 What is assumed by this prayer?

“…I delight in your commandments, which I love.”

~ Psalm 119:47

“…your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God….”

~ Genesis 3:5

“Sin, in the final analysis, is rebellion

against the sovereign Creator, Ruler, and

Judge of the universe. It resists the rightful

prerogative of a sovereign Ruler to

command obedience from His subjects….

“It says to an absolutely holy and

righteous God that His moral laws, which are a reflection of His own nature, are not worthy of our wholehearted

obedience.”

“the bondage of the will”

“The kingdom of self is heavily defended territory. Post-Eden

Adams and Eves are willing to pay their

respects to God, but they don't want him invading their turf.”~ Eugene Peterson

The Contemplative Pastor

2 What is the goal of this prayer?

The kingdom of God is the kind rule of God in the hearts of people.

~ Jesus of Nazareth in The Gospel of John, 4:34

“Jesus said to them, ‘My food is to do the will of him who sent me ….’”

“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done.”

~ Jesus of Nazareth inThe Gospel of Luke, 22:42

“…he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death,

even death on a cross.”

~ The Apostle Paul inPhilippians 2:8

“For in him all the fulness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things, whether

on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of the cross.”

~ The Apostle Paul in Colossians 1:19

“Joy’s Eternal Increase” by Samuel Storms, One Thing

“…on earth as it is in heaven.”

To pray, “Your will be done,” is to ask for the reign of God

to become real both in our lives and in our world

just as it is in heaven.

Main Idea

…we surrender our will to the will of our heavenly Father1

“For this is the will of my Father, that

everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him

should have eternal life….”~ Jesus of Nazareth in

Gospel of John, 6:40

~ CS Lewis The Great Divorce

“There are only two kinds of people—

those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom

God says in the end, ‘Thy will be done.’”

…we are wanting to want the will of our heavenly Father

2

~ The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 5:15

“…he died for all, that those who live might no longer

live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and

was raised.”

““…unless you submit to God’s will in everything, you are not submitting to him in anything. Think

about it. If you only follow God’s will when it happens to correspond to your own will, then you

never have to surrender at all. You are simply asking God to endorse your own agenda….”

”~ Phillip Ryken When You Pray

“Unless we are profoundly certain God is our Father, we will never be able to say, ‘thy will be done.’”

~ Tim Keller, Pastor Redeemer NYC

…we commit to doing the will of

our heavenly Father

I have a DREAM...Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to SPEED UP THAT DAY when all of God's children…, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual…

"FREE at last! FREE at last! Thank God Almighty, we are FREE at last!"

How can we SPEED UP THAT DAY

when God’s will is done on

earth as it is in heaven
