7th Grade Pre-AlgebraChapter 7: Linear Equations
Chapter 7-7Parallel and Perpendicular
Lines
Terms and Concepts (A) Parallel lines: lines that belong to the same
family of graphs due to the fact that they share a common slope.
If two lines (l and m) have the same slope then they are parallel
l || m Determining if lines are parallel
Write each equation in slope-intercept form Determine the slope for each equation (m) and if
they are the same, then both lines are parallel.
Terms and Concepts (B) Perpendicular lines: lines whose
slopes, when multiplied together, result in -1.
If the product of the slopes of two lines is -1, then the lines are perpendicular
In order for a line to be perpendicular to another, its slope must be the additive multiplicative inverse of the other.
Ex. The line with slope m = 3 is perpendicular with the line with slope m = -1/3
