Inaugural Utah Broadband Provider Roundtable

What is the Utah Broadband Project

A joint effort between – the Utah Public Service Commission (PSC) [the official

grant designee], – the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED),

[responsible for coordination and planning], and – the Utah Automated Geographic Reference Center (AGRC)

[responsible for mapping/technical services]– Provider Engagement Contractor: International Research

Center (IRC)

Funding

Mapping: $1.5 Million Planning: $500,000 • The total grant award just over $2 million• In-kind match for approximately $500,000• Total project estimate=$2,555,553

New Award• A supplemental award of $3.1 million was announced by the

NTIA last week.• What for?

– Prolong the “life” of the project from two to five years; – Support a research survey on broadband demand and Internet usage; – Provide for local outreach related to increasing broadband adoption; – Establish one additional staff member to support the existing project

staff; – Identify and implement best practices related to data collection,

integration, and validation; and – Leverage state-to-county relationships and Utah’s 911 Committee to

develop a statewide address file.

State Legislative Efforts

Rural Broadband Service Fund Act Utah Code Ann. § 63M-1-2305

• The fund was limited to $1,000,000 in post performance cash grants with a 50% of project cost ceiling and a sunset date of July 1, 2010.
