Evaluation

The use of digital photography can produce some good quality work. I think that it would be effective for a children’s book because it’s a little bit different to use real life imagery. The photographs can be edited to look all sorts of different ways. I had chosen to use pastel type effects on my images. The images can also be made to look cartoon like which would be quite effective in a children’s book as it would be more interesting to them. The pictures can show lots of different emotions and probably fill most of the pages which most children’s books look like. Because children of a very young age wont be able to read very well seeing them emotions with little text like a speech bubble coming from a character with little narration in it can help the child to learn. The process of editing these images can be quite fast depending on how you want them to look. This is one of the possible methods to use inside my book because it is not very time consuming and fairly easy to do.

Evaluation

The illustrations are not of a high standard or quality and they don’t look good enough to feature in a children’s book. The picture drawn shows an hour and a half of work and it is still unfinished, this indicates to me that using illustration is very time consuming and wouldn’t be suitable to use for my book. Although, children might like that hand drawn look effect. But it can be attempted using digital photography so I think that is what I will choose. A similar product that uses this is method is a children’s fantasy book/comic book.

I think that the quality of the work is better on the bottom right than the other. It didn’t take very long to do as there were only two techniques used taken from the filter gallery and one adjustment made. I think the right picture was chosen for this effect because it gives that cartoon look. I have decided to create a children’s book, so this particular image wouldn’t really fit the target audience, but given a more suitable image I think that the effect would work well for the book, even though it might look a bit unclear in some points. If the image was more clear I think it could be compared to a video game. The resources required for this are photoshop or a camera.

The second image uses two different effects but from the same tool bar. It’s a bit more clearer than the first image but also has that type of cartoon like effect. I think that this image is also unsuitable for a children’s book as the image doesn’t appeal to younger children. I think I am more likely to use the effects used on this one rather than the first just because it is clearer fort the child. The resources required again are photoshop and/or a camera.

Evaluation

I think that the overall quality of this image is quite good. This image was probably the most time consuming because it had a bit more detail than the others. When I started I thought that it would be more challenging than it was due to the detailed tattoos. The facial features were quite hard to rotascope because the original picture was quite blurry, but I think that it still looks good. I began trying to rotascope the tattoos but it became a bit too hard and it started to ruin the image because I couldn’t really copy how detailed they were. So I used a different shading technique and messed around with it making them either really dark or quite light. This particular design wouldn’t fit the target audience for a children’s book because the person featuring in the image is not appropriate for young ages. I find that this method of illustration is the most effective for my children’s book because it gives it more of a cartoon edge to it but you can also tell what is made very clearly. I think that it will appeal to children when I come to make illustrations that are more suitable for their age group and what they will understand. This type of method used has a very similar look to characters what you see on some children’s programmes lately. Due to this I think that it will appeal to children a lot more. The method required for this technique is photoshop.

Overeall Evaluation

I think that overall the experiments went quite well. I think that the least suited style was digital photography. Although I think that sometimes its good for there to be books available to children with real life imagery, I don’t think that it is suited to the style I want to have my book. I want my book to be very colourful and exciting, whereas I think that using digital photography could not be made as how I would like it to be. The style that I think would most be suited to me is rotascoping. Although I liked the comic book method, I think that it is too easy and wouldn’t take much time to produce and I wouldn’t be able to use the make it look how I wanted. I want my book to look detailed and carefully done. I think that if you put a lot of effort in to rotascoping it can look very good and it would really make a children’s book be very fun and interesting. I think that my rotascoping skills need a little more practice to make my product as well as I want it to be, so I am going to practice more and experimenting with lots of different tools, as on my previous images I only really used the rotascoping tool and none of the shapes etc. which I think on some parts will suit the characters better. I will go about mastering the technique of rotascoping in lessons.
