He was born on April 23, 1907 in Poughkeepsie in upstate New York. His parents were Theodor and Florence Miller. His father, of German descent, was an amateur photographer and often used his daughter as a model for his photographs, among which are quite naked performed with the stereoscopic technique; also he taught their children to take pictures since childhood.
At 19 she met Cond Nast, Vogue magazine founder, who began her modeling career.
