The annual CGAP Photo Contest, which was launched in 2006, aims to
highlight stand-out photography depicting financial inclusion around the
world. Through strong photography, CGAP showcases the different ways
in which poor households manage their financial lives and raises
awareness about the importance of formal financial services for people at
the base of the economic pyramid.

First Prize: Cormorant FishermanChina

While there aren't many practicing cormorant fishing these days, this man continues his family's legacy
as a cormorant fisherman. He became an entrepreneur as a local tour guide for the many travelers who
visit the area each year.

Second Prize: Gramophone RepairTurkey

This photo was taken in a grand bazaar in Istanbul. This old man still maintains a gramophone repair shop
and earns a decent living. Gramophone repair was also his father's profession.

Third Prize: SmallholderTanzania

Anjelica helps harvest Beatus Balama's farm in Ndiwili, Tanzania. Beatus farms with One Acre Fund, a social
enterprise based in East Africa that supplies smallholder farmers with the financing and training they need to grow
their way out of hunger and poverty. "I like One Acre Fund because we can pay little by little over time instead of
all at once for our planting supplies," Beatus says.8

A boatman provides sightseeing to the tourists who come to visit Konark Beach in Odisha, the poorest state in
India. An NGO has provided him with a small boat which affords him his livelihood and ability to support his
family.

Latin America and Caribbean Regional Winner: Brick MakerPeru

This man lives in a neighborhood where more than 200 families live dedicated to brick manufacturing. They sell
their bricks to individuals or companies who want to have bricks at a lower cost.

longer a barrier to working. This father was forced to work as a porter for his wife and children are still in school and

Fish net workers are common in the UAE. Every morning, they are busy fixing their nets in order to prepare for
another possible catch.

This man is 61 years old. Watch making and repairing is a family business which he has managed for over 30 years.

Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Winner: Active FishingTogo

On the coast of Togo, these men partake in active fishing with large nets released near the shore that are then
pulled onto the beach by the strength of dozens of young men joined in a cooperative. The fish caught in the net
are often scarce and of small size at the expense of their hard daily work.
