3rd-best Operating Result in Our History

Mercedes-Benz Vans delivered a solid performance in 2012. We achieved the third-best operating result in our history, and our six percent return on sales made us the most profitable van manufacturer in the business. Despite the difficult market situation, Mercedes-Benz Vans successfully defended its leading position for medium and large vans in Europe and took market share away from its competitors. This demonstrates that the growth strategy involving the launch of the Citan urban delivery vehicle and the “Vans goes global” initiative is effective. Although sales dropped to 252,400 units worldwide (2011: 264,200), revenues totaled €9.1 billi-on and were thus almost as high as in the prior year (2011: €9.2 billion). The division’s EBIT dropped to €541 million (2011: €835 million).

Profitable growth continues to be our priority this year, as shown by the following three examples. Now that we have successfully launched the Citan in Germany, we are gradually introducing the city van into all EU 27 markets. In Russia, which is Europe’s fastest-growing vans market, we will work together with our partner GAZ to produce the Sprinter Clas-sic, along with the engines and components for this series, in Nizhny Novgorod. We also expect the introduction of the new generation of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter to boost demand, starting in the middle of this year.

In Argentina, Daimler AG is investing around €80 million in its production plant in Buenos Aires. In North America, Mercedes-Benz Vans is growing twice as fast as the market, with sales rising by 19 percent in 2012 to 21,500 units. This success is partly due to our dual-brand strategy, under which the Sprinter is sold as either a Mercedes-Benz or a Freightliner brand vehicle.

As you can see, our vans are in demand all over world. Our activities are helping to shape the future of mobility on many continents, and our market-specific product ranges provide our customers with the best so-lutions for their needs.

Sincerely,Volker MornhinwegHead of Mercedes-Benz Vans

Mercedes-Benz Vans The brand with the star currently offers four van model series. The Citan urban delivery van (top, on the right) heads the list as the most recent addition to the van family. The model is available as a panel van, Mixto variant, or crewbus in three wheelbase lengths of 3.94, 4.32, and 4.71 meters with a payload of 500, 600, or up to 800 kilograms. The tried-and-tested Viano and Vito (top, on the left) have gross vehicle weight ratings of 3.05 and 3.2 tons, respectively. The Sprinter, Mercedes-Benz’ most successful van and a true global vehicle (top, second from left, and bottom), comes in three variants with a GVW ranging from 3 to 5 tons (the Sprinter is marketed in the NAFTA region un-der both the Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner brand names). Final-ly, there’s the well known Vario (top, second from right), which is available as a crewbus, panel van, or chassis for use with various body structures (GVW of 5 to 8.2 tons).

» March 2012 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter in winter tests at the Arctic Circle. The tried-and-te-sted Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is constantly being further develo-ped, and all the new modifications are tested under the harshest con-ditions imaginable. For example, prior to its market launch in the spring of 2012, the new Sprinter and its various upgraded features were extensively put through their paces at a special site in Arjeplog, Sweden. The trials focused on comprehensive practical tests for the new standard-fitted ADAPTIVE ESP® system with expanded func-tions as well as for the first and only seven-speed automatic van transmission with lock-up clutch. The Blue EFFICIENCY package and the new long axle ratio were also subjected to a fuel efficiency test and an evaluation of the asso-ciated emission levels. The results showed a fuel consumption of on-

ly seven liters per 100 kilometers. The test vehicles demonstrated that at temperatures below minus 30 degrees Celsius the Sprinter is able to fulfill its claim in relation to quality, safety, economy, and com-fort. What’s more, it is able to do so even under the exceptional and grueling conditions that prevail at the Arctic Circle.

» April 2012 Mercedes-Benz Citan: World premiere in Amsterdam. The Citan urban delivery van was unveiled to journalists shortly be-fore the RAI international commer-cial vehicle show in Amsterdam (April 17–21, 2012). This model se-ries is the youngest member of the van family, where it has joined the Sprinter and Vito. Its launch has made Mercedes-Benz a full-line supplier in the van segment. The Citan is targeted at commercial customers in Europe. Its addition to the product range marked the

entry of Mercedes-Benz Vans into the key city van segment of the future, thereby generating further growth potential for the division.

» May 2012 Courier, Express, and Parcel Van of the Year Awards for the Mercedes-Benz Vito, Sprinter, and Vito E-Cell. Mercedes-Benz vans were very successful once again in the com-petition for the Courier, Express, and Parcel Van of the Year Awards. The awards were presented in 2012 for the 12th time by the ETM-Verlag publishing company, which is based in Stuttgart. The award-re-lated tests were conducted on the road and focused on functionality, ride comfort, handling properties, design, and economy. All in all, the testers took 600 test drives that covered more than 9,000 kilome-ters on the streets and roads in the vicinity of a safety track near the city of Weimar. The Vito 113 CDI was able to beat out strong European competitors in the cate-gory for vans up to 2.8 tons GVW. The Sprinter 313 CDI with its new 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission and upgraded ESP package captured first place for vans up to 3.5 tons GVW. The Vito E-CELL, an all-electric vehicle, was awarded the special Alternative Drive Systems innovation prize,

which was presented for the se-cond time in 2012.

» May 2012 Sprinter wins 2012 Best Fleet Value in America awards. The U.S. market research company Vincentric presented the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with its Best Fleet Value in America award for 2012. The model’s crewbus and panel van variants impressed the competition judges following an extensive cost-analysis study. Spe-cifically, fleet operators confirmed that the van had the lowest overall lifecycle costs and displayed out-standing economy. The Sprinter models left their competitors be-hind especially in terms of value retention, fuel efficiency (diesel), insurance, and maintenance and repairs. Vincentric conducts the cost analyses to support fleet ope-rators and managers with their pro-curement decisions.

» July 2012 Attractive Vito EFFECT special edition model. Customers that have special requirements or want to highlight their firm’s excep-tional performance with their com-pany vehicles can now purchase the new Vito EFFECT special edi-tion model. The vehicle features a dynamic exterior in both its panel van and Mixto versions. Its spor-ty appearance is accentuated by

high-quality standard features that include a chromed radiator grille, 18-inch alloy wheels in vanadium silver, dynamic side skirts, and bumpers and impact strips pain-ted in the same color as the body. A sporty driving experience is en-sured by five different diesel and gasoline engines with outputs ran-ging from 70 kW (95 hp) to 190 kW (258 hp).

» August 2012 The MacGyver ye-ars are back. As usual, the uncon-ventional and inventive problem solver, who achieved cult status in the 1980s and 1990s, is using his brain, practical skills, and every-day items to defeat his enemies. In a new version of the show star-ring MacGyver actor Richard De-an Anderson, our hero relies on a very dependable vehicle — the new Citan. And with good reason. After all, the vehicle makes a big impression in terms of comfort and safety with features such as tightly upholstered seats with soft covers and the standard-fitted Electronic Stability Program (ESP®).

» September 2012 Citan tested by Deutsche Post. Deutsche Post DHL, Germany’s biggest parcel de-livery and logistics service provider, has received the first Citan. DHL will put the vehicle through an ex-

tensive six-month testing program as a letter and parcel delivery van that will travel all over Germany.

First auto show presentation as a full-line supplier. The IAA Com-mercial Vehicles show in Hanover, Germany, attracts a lot of media attention. Last year’s show, which took place from September 20 to 27, 2012, enabled Mercedes-Benz Vans to present itself to the public as a full-line supplier. The IAA van presentation included the new Ci-tan urban delivery van and the Vi-to E-CELL crewbus, which is based on the Vito E-CELL panel van that has been available ex-works since 2010. Also on display was a Sprin-ter E-CELL prototype, which can be driven in cities and rural areas, or on short highway trips. Along with the new models, the presen-tation featured the standard Vito/Viano and Sprinter vans equipped with conventional combustion en-gines, BlueEFFICIENCY technolo-gy and, in some cases, ADAPTIVE ESP®. In addition, Mercedes-Benz Vans introduced its new Mobilo-Van customer mobility guarantee to IAA visitors. The guarantee was launched as a standard feature on October 1, 2012.

livery and logistics service provider, is putting its faith in the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The van has been adapted to the company’s requi-rements through the creation of an integral body design and other modifications that were implemen-ted by the Spier systems specialist. The new delivery vehicle stands out because of its significantly lower overall operating costs.

» November 2012 Vito E-CELL for Finnish power company. A to-tal of 12 electric Vito E-CELL vans are now operating in Helsinki, the capital city of Finland. Here, they are making it possible to carry out urban deliveries without generating local emissions. The vehicles are being used by several energy supp-ly companies, as well as the Kuopio municipal authority, a construction company, a commercial vehicle rental firm, and a software logistics provider.

Swiss motor sports team uses the Sprinter as a support vehi-cle. Whether it’s Le Castellet (F), Imola (I), Magny-Cours (F), or the Westfalenfahrt, Ruhr-Pokal-Ren-nen, or Münsterlandpokal races in Germany — Schweizer Widberg Motorsport AG can be found at racing venues all over Europe. The company specializes in building,

servicing, diagnosing, and optimi-zing race cars. Schweizer Widberg Motorsport has now procured two Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 319 CDI high-roof models with the new 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission in order to provide better technical and logistics support to its onsite racing team. The motor sports ex-perts at the company were espe-cially impressed by the Sprinter’s ride comfort, great fuel economy, and low CO2 emissions. » December 2012 Vario-based firefighting vehicles for Switzer-land. A total of 18 fire departments in the Swiss canton of Solothurn placed a major procurement order for firefighting vehicles based on the Mercedes-Benz Vario 818 DA 4x4 model. The Vario ideally con-forms to the requirements laid out in the call for tenders. The vehicle’s engine delivers 130 kW (177 hp) and torque of 675 Nm to all four wheels. The model is also compact and highly maneuverable. In additi-on, it offers optimal payload capa-city with its 8.2-ton gross vehicle weight rating.

» February 2013 Mercedes-Benz vans for construction sites. The bauma 2013 trade show, which will take place from April 15 to 21 in Munich, Germany, is already

attracting attention to itself and thus the range of customized vans Mercedes-Benz offers for all types of construction applications. Virtu-ally no other type of vehicle has to be able to cope with such a wide variety of construction jobs as a van. The tasks include short trips and highway journeys. In addition, vans must be able to operate as tool transporters, special attach-ment carriers, service vehicles, and vehicles that transport construc-tion crews and materials. Vans are thus indispensable helpers in the construction industry, They al-so make it possible to implement specialized solutions for primary and secondary construction appli-cations ex works. Depending on the jobs they’re needed for, the Citan and the tried-and-tested Vito and Sprinter model series can be tailored to any requirement. The portfolio of vans with the star the-refore covers the complete range of variants from panel vans to Mixto versions, flatbeds, and crewbuses for transporting workers. All of the vehicles are also available ex works with special body and interior desi-gns from selected system partners as part of the Mercedes-Benz Van-Solution program.

And the winner is — the Citan! It’s only been on the market for a few

months, but it has already captured an award: The Mercedes-Benz Ci-tan urban delivery van has been named Van of the Year in Spain by the Transporte3 trade magazine.

50 Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL models for the Danish postal service. Mercedes-Benz Danmark will deliver 50 battery-powered electric vehicles to Post Danmark over the next few months as part of the biggest order placed for Vito E-CELL panel vans in Europe to date. Denmark is one of seven countries in Europe that were designated target markets by Mercedes-Benz Vans prior to the launch of the Vito E-CELL.

Five new assistance systems improve safety. With its world pre-miere presentations of Crosswind Assist, Collision Prevention Assist, and Blind Spot Assist, Mercedes-Benz Vans is impressively under-scoring its role as an innovation leader among van manufacturers. The new systems will be introduced in just a few months to the vans wi-th the star. Also making their debut are Lane Keeping Assist and High-beam Assist. “With our vans, we have been a pioneer in safety from the very beginning — and we’re now ushering in a new era of innovati-on,” says Volker Mornhinweg.
