SUVs are Extremely Popular in the US

One of the biggest reasons people ditch their SUV rental for their very own luxury SUV is security.

SUV’s are fantastic vehicles, with plenty of room, luxury features, and additional safety precautions, but after a recent security breach at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, that reputation of safety and reliability has been tarnished.

Your Uconnect-Enabled Vehicle is a Target

Hackers have discovered a way to break into the FCA’s internet-enabled Uconnect system, and this security hole has already been responsible for at least one car accident in which a hacker gained access to a Jeep’s on-board software and used that software to disable the vehicle’s engine, breaks, and steering.

The hacker then took complete control of the vehicle and drove it into a nearby ditch.

Again, and we cannot stress enough: this isn’t something that could happen, it’s something that has already happened, and all vehicles with the Uconnect system are potential targets for hackers.

Where Did this Vulnerability Come From?

Until recently, a vehicle’s vulnerabilities were limited to the entertainment console, but as more and more technology was introduced, that on-board computer was given access the the vehicle’s most vital functions including braking, acceleration, and even the windshield wipers.

With all of those moving parts, it was only a matter of time until something went wrong.

Are You at Risk?

So who is vulnerable?

Everyone with the Uconnect system installed in their cars.

If you’ve purchased a vehicle from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles since late 2013, you’re likely vulnerable to this security breach, but thanks to security analysts that found this vulnerability earlier this year, an update was made available on July 16th that will prevent hackers from accessing your vehicle’s controls.

“This update might not sound particularly important, but trust me, if you can, you really should install this one,” said Charlie Miller, a security researcher who has worked with this vulnerability.

Luckily for Jeep owners, this update is simple and easy to install.

Download the security update from your vehicle’s manufacturer’s website.

Move that security update onto a USB storage device such as a thumb drive.

Plug that USB storage device into your Uconnect-enabled vehicle.

Alternatively, car owners can contact their local dealership for more information on this vulnerability and the update, and most dealerships will install the update for you. Unfortunately, FCA has announced that they are unable to deliver a mass update via the Uconnect network itself, so the above methods are currently the only way to get this update – it will not be automatically installed.

Are You In Danger?

Independent security expert Graham Cluley added, “The attacks could be tweaked to work on any Chrysler car with a vulnerable Uconnect head unit.”

It’s currently unclear which specific makes and models of FCA vehicles have this vulnerability, but just to be on the safe side, you should contact your dealer for more information, and install the update as soon as possible if you’re able to do so.
