5 Movies That Could Flop in 2017

In 2016, Viacom announced that it expected to take a big writedown on one of its 2017 movies. That film is likely Monster Trucks.

There’s a lot of pressure on Wonder Woman to deliver a strong lead-in to Warner’s Justice League, but it’s unclear to what extent the character is a box-office draw.
Wonder Woman
Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad delivered big ticket sales despite poor receptions from critics and audiences, but Wonder Woman’s smaller cast and World War I setting could work against it if the picture does not turn out to be a quality product. The film has an estimated production budget of $150 million.

Kong: Skull Island will hit theaters on March 10. With a $190 million production budget, the movie will likely need to gross more than $500 million in order to have a profitable theatrical run.

King Kong was last the subject of a major movie in 2005 – a film that turned out to be a major flop. Unless Skull Island has quality and strong marketing working in its favor, it could meet a similar fate.

The latest big screen take on the King Arthur lore comes courtesy of Warner Bros., and reportedly carries a production budget north of $100 million.

King Arthur’s release has been pushed back four times, and will now debut on May 12. Shifting release dates are often a sign of low studio confidence.

Fox’s 2012 film Prometheus reintroduced audiences to the Alien film universe and put up a solid box-office performance, but this year’s Covenant could fall flat.

Prometheus got a mixed reception from audiences, and excluding the first two entries in the Alien franchise, none have been especially strong performers at the box office. With an estimated production budget between $100 million and $150 million, Covenant looks like a risky release for Fox.
