Bonus Insights! We asked purpose-experts Aaron Hurst and Andrew Hewitt two bonus questions to help you get started on finding your purpose.

Page 40: 5 ways to create purpose that engages employees

What’s one thing you can do now to get started on

finding your purpose?

Page 41: 5 ways to create purpose that engages employees

The first step to tailor your work to maximize purpose is to appreciate the purpose you already have today. At the end of the day take 1 minute and reflect on what brought energy and inspiration. What work? Conversations? Learning? Impact?

Over time, look for patterns for what brings meaning to your work and intentionally find ways to do more of those things. It is that easy.

Research purpose-driven companies.

Note which ones make you FEEL inspired. Look for common themes of the industries, causes, or company practices that inspires you most. Lean into the area you are most inspired by that can benefit most from your unique strengths.

What metrics can you use to define purpose?

Page 44: 5 ways to create purpose that engages employees

The best metric I know is simply rating the levels of meaning you get from relationships, making and impact and personal growth.

Once a week write down a number from 1-10 reflecting how strongly you agree with each of these statements:

1. I have deeply meaningful relationship at work.

2. My work matters.3. I am growing as a personal and

professional through my work.Aaron Hurst CEO, Imperative and bestselling author of “The Purpose Economy”

The method I find most useful for helping organizations define their purpose and measure their progress is a Theory of Change. This includes:

1. An Intended Impact statement. 2. The Strategies (initiatives) for

creating the impact you intend. 3. Impact Measurements for tracking

your progress towards your intended impact.

Page 46: 5 ways to create purpose that engages employees

1. An organization needs a purpose bigger than themselves for people to connect with.

2. Purpose is created when people and organizations work together to create value.

3. Remember: Purpose isn’t created from a statement. It’s created from doing things that

are meaningful.

4. Embrace a culture that enables individuals to be themselves at work.

5. Get inspiration from companies that are leading purpose-driven organizations.

In summary...5 ways to create purpose with employee engagement.
