During the photo shoot, which takes us to almost every corner of the brewery, I come to the conclusion that a television program such as ‘Back to the Workfloor’, in which directors go undercover to work alongside their

employees, where they make the most shocking discoveries, would be impossible here. Michel knows his way around the brewery’s floor and the members of the night shift obviouslyknow him well. “In 1871, my great-

grandfather Jan-Leonard Moortgat expanded his farm to include a brewery,” Michel explains. “Cooling installations didn’t exist at the time, so logically, brewing was a winter activity. An ideal combination with an

agricultural enterprise that is primarilyactive during summer. Machines and equipment that normally lay still during the winter were put to use to generate an income during the cold season as well.”
