THE NAME

Dauntless Chemical LLC takes its name from the famed racing schooner, Dauntless, built in 1869 in Mystic, a small port town in Connecticut on Long Island Sound which was a prominent whaling and shipbuilding center throughout the 19th century.



THE NAME

The logo picture is from a work painted in 1871 during the America's Cup trials by James Edward Buttersworth, entitled “Dauntless leading Columbia at the lightship with Madeleine following”.



THE NAME

Dauntless sailed for the first America's Cup defense, held on 08 August 1870, defeating the English challenger, Cambria. She was selected to start as the Cup defender in the second cup defense in October 1871, but developed a technical problem on the way to the starting line and was replaced by the back-up ship Columbia, which won the race, defeating the English challenger, Livonia.



THE NAME

Dauntless was originally owned by James Gordon Bennett, Vice-Commodore of the New York Yacht Club and sailed out of her home port of Essex, Connecticut. She continued to race in many New York Yacht Club-sponsored races, including two transatlantic races, over the next 20 years.

She was retired from racing in the 1890's, having logged an impressive number of victories.

PEOPLE

Rick Jones, Principal Rick is well known throughout the Chemical Industry, having worked for Union Carbide for many years. Following his career at Carbide, he worked for two global trading companies; first with Kolmar Petrochemicals, then as Chief Operating Officer of Continental Industries Group just prior to establishing Dauntless Chemical. A Chemical Engineer by training, Rick received his undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Rick spent the first half of his career at Union Carbide in R&D, first in Carbide's Bound Brook laboratories and then at the Tarrytown laboratories as Director of R&D for the Ethylene Oxide Derivatives Division. He then moved to the commercial side of the business, ultimately becoming Business Director for the Ethylene Oxide/Glycols business. Much of Rick's Union Carbide commercial experience was in the international arena, including heavy involvement in Asian, Middle Eastern and European joint ventures and acquisitions, including a two-year assignment in Wilton, England. While at Union Carbide, he attended two resident Executive Management Courses at Harvard Business School.

He brings with him 15 years of experience in managing people and solving complex problems in pressure situations in the entertainment industry. He is a graduate in Stage Management of the Mountview Conservatory for the Performing Arts in London, England.

Gwen Kordonowy, AccountingGwen is responsible for Dauntless’ accounting and accounting systems development. She is fluent in German and worked for a time for Kolmar Petrochemicals in their accounting department at Kolmar’s Zug, Switzerland headquarters. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and currently teaches writing at Boston University.
