Violence is...
“Any act of physical, verbal or psychological threat or abuse, assault or trauma on an individual that results in physical or psychological
damage.”- Frema Engel (1989)
WORKPLACE VIOLENCE POLICY
• Safe and healthy work environment free from:− Physical Attack: unwanted hitting, fighting, pushing, use of weapons etc.
− Threats: expression of intent to cause physical or mental harm
− Property Damage
• Violence/threats of violence are prohibited especially
when:− it is abusive and could cause physical or mental harm
− it damages company or employee property
− Disrupts work
PARTICPANTS IN WORKPLACE VIOLENCE
• Coworkers• Former employees• Friends/family of employees• Customers• Suppliers/delivery people• Criminal
EXAMPLES OF WORKPLACE VIOLENCE
• Verbal threats/harassment• Attempting to cause physical harm• Inappropriate remarks• Disorderly conduct• Verbal harassment• Making false or malicious statements which could
damage reputations or undermine authority
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
• If you are concerned about the safety or wellbeing of yourself or a fellow employee due to a domestic violence situation or domestic situation that could become violent please talk to your manager
• Take advantage of employee assistance programs
• Sudden and pronounced changes in behavior• Threats• Excessive absenteeism/poor quality work• Statements that imply taking action• Anger• Social withdrawal• Emotional mood swings
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
DIFFUSING POTENTIAL VIOLENT SITUATIONS
• Assess the situation• Remain Calm• Listen• Be aware of your surroundings• Tell someone• Do not argue or become angry
