Features, Issues and Philosophy

What are the key questions that we must answer in order to build

something that is useful to this community?

Page 4: Faroes Future: Questions and Storyboards

JISC funded ProjectRepository vs. Index

• Will people upload content or link to content?

• Will Faroes’ added value be the content, or the information about how to use content for teaching?

Page 5: Faroes Future: Questions and Storyboards

JISC funded ProjectWhat about tagging?

• Personal Tags (34%)– “myfavorite”, “readthislater”

• Subjective Tags (4%)– “cool”, “sucks”

• Factual Tags (62%)– “tutorial”, “politics”

• Studies have also shown that often it is the least popular tags that are the most useful

Copyright

• What position should we take?– Link without restriction?– Upload items with a copyright statement?– “Report abuse” mechanisms?– Assume Creative Commons?

Page 8: Faroes Future: Questions and Storyboards

JISC funded ProjectCollections

• Should we allow people to create collections– Like albums, channels and reading lists– What is a collection of teaching resources called?

• When does a collection become a Learning Object?

• Are these Learning Objects from the bottom up?

Storyboards and Discussion

JISC funded ProjectFuture Work

• We are currently working on a first version of PuffinShare– The discussion today will directly inform this!– Hope to have a public beta by the Summer

• We are building a simple version first– Will add functionality in response to user interest– Probably Tags and Collections first

• We will offer to visit interested (potential) users – Help identify (and upload) digital resources – Gather feedback on PuffinShare
