The challengeTransport for South Hampshire (TfSH) identified the need to engage with workplaces and large businesses to meet the core aims of their Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) bid, which are to:
• reduce road congestion which affects public transport and business deliveries
• improve air quality in the towns and cities• reduce CO2 emissions.
Due to the wide geographical spread of the project area, the diverse range of workplaces and the variance in distances and modes used to travel to work, finding one engagement tool to encourage active and sustainable travel to work was a challenge. A way to successfully record changes in travel behaviour also needed to be created.
Sustrans’ solutionThe ‘My Journey’ Challenge offered workplaces a bespoke interactive competition to engage their staff in active and sustainable travel to and from work.
The Challenge:
• engaged over 2000 participants across more than 80 companies
• allowed participants to log journeys online or through their smart phone app
• displayed progress through live dashboards, with leader-boards showing journeys logged by mode, distance, calories burnt, plus money and carbon saved
• allowed TfSH to include the transport modes most relevant to them
• promoted local LSTF initiatives, business and tourism through tailored web pages.
