• This slide show tells the tale about how some of the biggest names in Hip-Hop earn money outside of the music industry.• I will discuss many endorsements, partnerships as well as

company buy outs that not only put money in everyone’s pockets, but furthers the brand named by drawing headlines.• All stars in question have been verified from the Forbes list.• This slide show was based upon the Globalization chapter

in the Organizational Communication text book.

What is Globalization?

• Globalization is when a company create an international influence• When an organization starts to operate on an international scale• The process by which people, companies, and governments of different

nations interact with one another.

How Does The Industry Globalize?

• Organizations within the Hip-Hop industry globalize when they endorse products.• Those products include clothing, alcohol, and different

brand names in the world such as Nike, Adidas, and Converse.

Nine Shots to Nine Figures

• In 2003 50 cent dropped his debut album “Get Rich Or Die Trying” on March 8th. His break out single “In Da Club” helped the album reach the #1 spot on the Billboard 100 Chart and stayed there for nine straight weeks. • While 50 climbed the charts his manager Chris Lighty at

Violator Management got him a number of endorsement deals.• Those endorsements deals weren’t your normal

endorsement deals, these deals offered large salaries upfront and back end equity stakes

Vitamin Water Baby• Beverage Company Executive Rohan

Oza was watching a Reebok commercial staring 50 and noticed he was drinking vitamin water at the end of the commercial.• Vitamin Water was owned by a

company called Gleceau and Rohan was their brand manager at the time.• After meeting with Rohan 50 Cent

became Vitamin Water’s first celebrity endorser for $5 Million and a 5% Equity stake.

Deal’s Background

• Oza gave 50 Cent seven flavors to choose from to determine the initial flavor of Vitamin Water for his partnership.• From Queens to Harlem to Compton every bodega, deli,

and corner store sold “Quarter Waters” when Chris Lightly and 50 were growing up.• Labeled the “Ultimate Ghetto Beverage” next to Kool-Aid

the Quarter Waters came in a variety of wild flavors, but the hood only drank grape, so Formula 50 had to be grape.

Show Me The Money

• On May 25th in 2007 Coca Cola bought Glaceau for $4.1 Billion in cash. • 50 Cent received an estimated $150-$200 Million before

taxes and anywhere between $75-$100 Million after taxes.• This Brung 50’s net worth to nearly a half a billion dollars

all off his 10 Percent share in the company.

• A number of Hip-Hop heavyweights have managed to globalize in the industry in different ways.• Those heavyweights included Diddy, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, and

Kanye West• Safe to say 50 Cent started a trend with his vitamin water

deal.

Word To Diddy We Cirocin’

• Hip-Hop Millionaire Sean Combs also known as Diddy inked a 50/50 multi-year deal with Diageo North America which houses the Vodka Brand Ciroc in 2007.• The deal raised his net worth to more than $100 Million and

this was the first US multi year collaboration.

Selling Off The Shelves

• A decade after the deal was signed the sales of Ciroc grew tremendously. • In 2007 Ciroc was selling a mere 120,000 cases a year,

during the second year of the deal with Diddy that numbered jumped to 400,000. As of today Diageo sells 2 million cases a year.

The Doctor Is In…..The Bank

• Hip-Hop Mogul Dr. Dre has been a heavy force in the Hip-Hop since the late 80’s.• In late 2008 Dr. Dre partnered with Monster Cable and

developed the first line of Beats by Dre headphones• In 2014 Apple bought the Beats by Dre brand for $3 Billion• It’s been reported that Dr. Dre pocketed $620 Million before

taxes gaining him the title of the world’s top-earning musician of 2014.

Allow him to reintroduce himself

• Rapper Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter is one of the most highest paid rappers in the industry.• In 1996 Jay, Damon Dash, and Kareem “Biggs” Burke

founded Roc-A-Fella Records. The label was a division of The Island Def Jam Music Group• Jay-Z also has a clothing line called Rocawear and he owns

several bars and restaurants

Hustlers Ambition

• In 2003 Jay-Z opened 40/40 in New York City.• 40/40 is a chain of sports bars and lounge's and is named

after a baseball term for a group of major league baseball players who have achieved to get 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season.• Jay later opened 40/40 clubs in Atlantic City, Las Vegas,

Brooklyn, and Atlanta.

Cut From a Different Cloth

• In 1999 Jay-Z and his Roc-A-Fella Records Co-Founder Damon Dash created Rocawear.• The clothing line grossed in annual sales worth $700

Million, in 2007 R&B singer Ciara and Chris Brown were among other celebrities who apart of Rocawear’s “I Will Not Lose” Campaign.• That same year in March, Jay sold the rights to Rocawear to

Iconix Brand Group for $204 Million. Jay retained his stake in the company and continued to oversee the marketing, licensing, and product development of Rocawear.

Word to the Wise

• Jay-Z has a net worth of over $450 Million and decided to pass along 10 tips to entrepreneurs• The number one rule is to hustle. Jay-Z started hustling at a

young age as a mean to support his family, and he urges all go getters to get out there and chase your dreams at all costs.• Another key tip he gives out is to not wait until you have all

the tools to execute a key plan. Entrepreneurs should always do little steps ahead to prepare for the bigger plan in the works.

Yeezy Does It

• In 2007 Kanye West and Nike Creative Director Mark Smith started to work and develop The Nike Air Yeezy sneaker. By 2009 The Air Yeezy Sneaker was created and hit the markets on May 2, 2009 & June 1, 2009. Each pair cost $215 and sold out almost immediately.• Three years later Kanye(Yeezy) released The Air Yeezy II

Sneaker on June 9, 2012 for $245. The shoe had great commercial success then led to another pair with a surprise release date on February 9, 2014 and named “Red Octobers”. The show was sold exclusively on Nike’s website and immediately sold out within seconds.

• Kanye West managed to get the attention of three major brands while desgining his own line of sneakers.• In 2009 Kanye collaborated with Louis Vuitton and created

three models which were named after significant figures in his life: Louis Vuitton Don, Louis Vuitton Jasper, and Louis Vuitton Hudson.• In 2006 West collaborated with the street wear company

B.A.P.E. and created a pair of shows based on his mascot, The Dropout Bear.• Then finally in 2013 Kanye took the Yeezy Brand name to

Adidas

New Shoe Who This?

• Adidas confirmed that Kanye West was bringing the Yeezy Brand to the company on December 3, 2013. • On February 8, 2015 they released the new official name

“Yeezy Boost 750” and dropped exclusively on the Adidas app on February 14, 2015 at retail price for $350, the shoes sold out within 10 minutes.• West then went on to release two more versions of the new

Yeezy Boost sneakers. One pair called the Yeezy Boost 350 on June 27, 2015 for $200. The Yeezy Boost 350 V2 was released on September 24, 2016 for $220/
