Leadership and Management
• Leadership and Management are the core and fundamental tenents of any business, with-out Leadership and Mangement, effectively there is no business.
• Taking control of the Leadership and Management role provides the steering, the motivation, values and vison that are so vital to business and organisational goals.
Leadership
• Leadership is defined as ‘the process of interaction in which the leader influences others toward a goal/achievement’ (Yukl, 1998)
• The term suggests that there is a strong relationship formed between the leader and the follower.
Characteristics of Leadership
• Guiding Vision– Clarity is vital, visionaries are often thought-leaders
and creative thinkers – innovators even.
• Passion– Passion and belief, self-confidence and motivation.
• Integrity– Honesty, truth, awareness qualities which are all
developed through experience and cannot be taught.
Management
• Management is defined as:• ‘The process by which a manager
of an organisation efficiently utilises resources to achieve its overall goals at a minimum cost and maximum profit.
Skills of Managers
• Analytical and Problem Solving– The ability to see opportunities within a problem,
strong determination, and the ability to analyse complex situations.
• Personal Characteristics– Empathy, communicaton skills, strength of
character, flexibility and understanding
Leadership and Management
• As you can see leadership and management go hand in hand, there are multiple cross-functional disciplines that have to be mastered
• To become effective in leadership and mangement, it is a good idea to develop skill with an ILM Level 5 Diploma.
