Metro Rail 1984

Kolkata  (  formerly  known  as  Calcutta  )  Metro  was  the  first  metro  rail  to  be  setup  in  India  and  the  fifth  one   to   be   established   in   entire   Asian   continent.  Maintained  by  the  Indian  Railway,  this  underground  metro  network  became  functional  in  the  year  1984.

The  metro  rail  stretches  from  the  northern  Kolkata  at  Dum  Dum  and  continues  through  Park  Street  and  Esplana,   in  the  center  of   the  city,   to  the  southern  end,  in  Tollygunge.

The   entire   length   of   Kolkata   metro   network   is  16.45  km  and  there  is  a  total  of  17  stations  on  the  entire   stretch.   Metro   rail   is   one   of   the   most  convenient  modes  of   traveling   in  a  crowded  city  like  Kolkata.

Now  ,  The  new  line  which  is  also  under  preparation    will  cover  Howrah  Maidan,  Howrah,  Mahakaran,  Central,   Sealdah,   Phool   Bagan,   Salt   Lake  Stadium,  Bengal  Chemical,  City  Centre,  Central  Park,  Karuna  moyee  and  Salt  Lake  Sector  V.

In   view   of   the   fast   growing   population   and  increasing  traffic  problems  of  Delhi  ,  Central  Road  Research   Institute   (CRRI)   conducted   a   study   in  1970s.  It  recommended  the  setting  up  of  a  Mass  Rapid  Transit  Network  for  the  city.  In  the  years  that  followed,   numerous   studies  were   conducted   and  plans  were  prepared.

The   ultimate   result   of   all   this   effort   was   the  commencement  of   the  Delhi  Metro  Rail.   It  was  setup   to   provide   a   solution   to   the   day-by-day  rising  traffic  woes  of  the  city.

The  train  boasts  of  all  the  world-class  machinery  and  facilities  and  is  the  pride  of  the  capital  city.  The   network   consists   of   five   colour-coded  regular  lines  and  the  faster  Airport  Express  line,  with  a  total  length  of    serving  160  stations.213  km

Construction  on  the  system  ,  now  designated  as    Namma  (Our)  Metro  ,    started  a  few  months  after  a  ceremonial  launch  by  the  Indian  Prime  Minister  in  June  2006.
