Page 18: Phil Davies and Tim Surgenor

An ideal BIM methodology involves:

Developing

Assessing

Establishing

Collaborating

Managing

It requires that all participants:

Commit

Contribute

Ensure

Adopt

BIM Methodology

Page 19: Phil Davies and Tim Surgenor

The key to success with BIM delivery is dependent on:

a clear understanding of the client and project team's objectives

a careful assessment of the capabilities of the team, timeframe and budget

The ideal BIM process is one in which:

all stakeholders are committed to developing, and deriving information from the digital model

roles and responsibilities are clearly defined

a contractual framework that encourages greater collaboration.

BIM Success

Through Coordination

BIM From Design to Construction

From Design

To Construction

…and beyond?

Page 21: Phil Davies and Tim Surgenor

BIM process seeks to facilitate and encourage higher levels of collaboration - not just 3D drafting

Frequent information sharing - Airport single modelling team

Sub-contractor, engineer and architect design teams stationed together

Potential Benefits to Sub-contractors

• Significantly reduced project delivery risk

• Ultimately total lower cost and improved profitability

• Reduced site meetings

• Improved coordination and reduction in on-site clashes

• Reduction in re-works and material wastage

• Scheduling and planning accuracy

Potential Benefits to Sub-contractors

• Measuring, take-offs, procurement

• Shop drawing processes

• Pre-fabrication

• BIM to Field – iPads e.g. BIM glue

Benefits of Sub-contractors using BIM to the consultant and client in:

• Reduced RFI’s

• Less variations

• As-build Model as an asset for owner

However…

• All depends on early engagement of Sub-contractors and…

• Their attitude to and experience of BIM

• 3D drafting vs Collaborative BIM
