HISTORYIn 1940s Motorola developed abackpacked two-way radio, theWalkie-Talkie and a large hand-heldtwo-way radio for the US military.The same technology developedfurther and produced the mobilephone that we know today. 4. Dr. Martin Cooper ofMotorola is consideredto be the inventor of thefirst practical mobilephone. On April 3, 1973,Martin placed a call torival Joel Engel, head ofresearch at AT&Ts BellLabs, while walking thestreets of New York Citytalking on the firstMotorola DynaTACprototype. 5. The first mobilephones, referred to asFirst Generation or 1G,were introduced to thepublic market in 1983by the MotorolaCompany. These firstmobile phones usedanalog technologywhich was much lessreliable than the digitaltechnology we usetoday. 6. During the 1990s, greatimprovements weremade in the mobilephone technology.These phones usedSecond Generation, or2G technology. In 1990,the first cell phone callwas made using thenew digital technologythat becamecharacteristic of thisera. 7. The Third Generationtechnology, or 3G, is whatmany people currently use intheir digital cellular phonestoday. This technology wascreated very soon after theexcitement that the 2Gtechnology created. This newtechnology is not onlycapable of transferring voicedata (such as a phone call),but it is also able to transferother types of data, includingemails, information andinstant messages. 8. The MotorolaStarTac was the firstphone in the worldwith Vibrating alertfunction. It wasunveiled in NorthAmerica on January3, 1996. StarTACsremained popularuntil the early 2000s. 9.
