Motivation = the forces either internal or external to a person that arouse enthusiasm and persistence to pursue a certain course of action.

Motivation can be defined as the factors that initiate, direct, and sustain human behavior over time.

1. All human behavior is caused – people have a reason for doing what they are doing.

2. All behavior is directed toward achieving a goal – people do things to accomplish something not just at random.

3. Each person is unique because of a different heredity and environment – therefore, people are motivated in different ways.

◦Locus of Control refers to an individual's perception of main causes of the events in life.

◦According to Philip Zimbardo –A locus of control orientation is a belief about whether the outcomes of our actions are contingent on what we do (internal control orientation) or on events outside our personal control (external control orientation)

◦Individuals with a high internal locus of control believe that events result primarily from their own behavior and actions.

◦Those with a high external locus of control believe that powerful others, fate, or chance primarily determine events.

◦ Motivational theories boil down to two basic premises:

The desire of gain.The fear of loss.

Need for achievement – the desire to accomplish something difficult, attain a high standard of success, master complex tasks, and surpass others.

Need for affiliation – the desire to form close personal relationships, avoid conflict, and establish warm friendships.

Need for power – the desire to influence or control others, to be responsible for others, and have authority over others.
