History – Key points

•1963: IPC Media founded

•1968: IPC Split into six divisions – Newspaper, Magazine, Trade & Technical, Books, Printing and New Products.

•1970: IPC taken over by Reed International

•Early 90s: First set of ‘lad’s mags’ released, starting with Loaded magazine.

•1998: IPC Media taken over by Time Inc.

History – Key points

•1875: Bauer Media founded

•1953: First magazine, Angling Times, published

•1987: First magazine published in he UK

•1990: Radio business began with London station Kiss FM, followed by Liverpool’s Radio City and then Melody FM, which was to become Magic 105.4

• 1994: Company buys magazine, For Him Magazine, which would become FHM.

•1996: Acquired first digital TV channel, The Box

•Throughout the 90s and 00s, Bauer released several more magazines, radio stations, and TV channels.

Bauer Media is a worldwide corporation – with it’s headquarters in Hamburg, Germany, which employs 6,750 people, it’s worldwide magazine sales are

around 38 million copies a week – the same as the entire population of California.

•1985: Future plc. Founded by Chris Anderson

•1994: Future plc. Sold to Pearson PLC, then bought back by Anderson in 1998

Future plc. is a media company; in 2006, it was the sixth-largest in the United Kingdom. It publishes more than 150 magazines in fields such as video games, technology, automotive, cycling, films and photography. Future is the official magazine company of all three major games console manufacturers.

•GlamourThe majority of the magazines made by Condé Nast seem to be aimed at women, and most of those mags seem to be on fashion, such as Vogue and Glamour. There are virtually none on music, gaming, film, TV or sport.

•1959: S.I Newhouse Sr. purchases controlling interest in Condé Nast publishing

•1953: First major magazine, Angling Times, is first produced.

•1956: Motor Cycle News founded

•In the 1970s and 80s, the company reached its peak

•1996: emap sold 63 of its magazine rights, eventually turning emap into an independent magazine publisher.

Emap Limited is a British media company, specialising

in the production of business-to-business magazines, and the

organisation of business events and conferences. The

company was once a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index but is now owned by Apax and Guardian Media

Group.

"EMAP" is an acronym, standing for East Midland

Allied Press.
