INNOVATION & REVENUE 'OPERATOR'As an Operator ,one of the biggest misconceptions in the telecom industry is that free

calling apps or OTT players are a threat to mobile operators.

OTT players cannot survive without the telecom operator’s infrastructure of phone towers, satellites etc. They need all of these so that customers have access to data – the

very basis of their service.

And this is where telecom operators and OTTs need to collaborate, rather than compete. This can open up new revenue streams for the telecom operators and also help them

stem the drop in voice revenue.

For the purpose of this illustration, let us assume the average spend per user per month (ARPU) in India is 200 rupees. That would get the customers about 170 minutes worth of call time on conventional phone calls.

Currently in India you can purchase about 120MB of data for about 30 rupees. That is sufficient for the customers to make 1,150 minutes worth of phone calls using a low band-width VoIP app like Ringr.

So, if the customers use their entire 200 rupees monthly spend to buy data, it would give them 170 minutes of talk time on Ringr, plus an additional 772MB of data to surf the internet. Not only will they get the exact amount of talk

time, they can also surf the internet without paying anything extra.

The telecom operators stand to benefit as they can encourage more people to pay for data. With revenue from voice and SMS on the decline, data has become key to the survival of Telcos. This plan also allows telecos to offset the

decline in voice revenue by charging for data used to make OTT calls, I.e a part of the data sold can be set aside for calls made using VoIP app.
