Why Open & Collaborative Networks?

Open and collaborative networks reduce the costs of, and accelerate innovation.

The most disruptive new technologies, such as 3D printing, personal drones and blockchain, have been created and popularized by open networks.

Ethereum Montreal meetup Oct. 24, 2015 at Sensorica

Page 5: We are sensorica december 2016

Why Open & Collaborative Networks?

The rise of the OPEN signals profound, but positive socioeconomic changes.

Well-structured open and collaborative networks outcompete traditional, hierarchically organized institutions.

Page 6: We are sensorica december 2016

Why Open & Collaborative Networks?

Open collaborative networks create sustainable innovation, and put in place sustainable production and distribution systems. They also implement better mechanisms for redistribution of wealth and offer work environments that are purpose driven and more humane.

Global Context

The global market for the collaborative economy is expected to reach $335 billion US by 2025, up from $15 billion in 2014, 63% annual growth rate. The collaborative economy is a heavy, structuring and promising trend.

Europe is introducing new policies to foster open science/innovation, the commons and p2p practices, and allocates millions of euros yearly to programs that nurture these initiatives.

What are some of today’s challenges in innovating?

■ Solving local problems, locally■ Gaining input from the stakeholders in all stages of development ■ Curtailing extractive / exploitative crowdsourcing ■ Distributing equitable value to innovators■ Fostering collaboration in a cross-disciplinary / international /

intercultural context ■ Countering job fatigue / dissatisfaction ■ Tapping excess creative capacities■ Next generation IT infrastructure and ecosystem process

automation

Today’s challenges in innovation?

New Stakeholders hold a lot of value. Traditional Stakeholders can greatly benefit from leveraging these New Stakeholders but have trouble understanding their practices and interfacing with them. For more than six years, SENSORICA has been building bridges between the two, so that Canada can become a leader in the New Economy.

SENSORICA - an Open Value Network (OVN)

The SENSORICA network has developed and implemented a new paradigm for open innovation and peer production, called the Open Value Network (OVN) - now the subject of numerous publications, international conferences, documentaries, and university courses.

Page 37: We are sensorica december 2016

SENSORICA - an Open Value Network (OVN)

The Open Value Network (OVN) model is at the heart of the P2P economy. It allows individuals and organizations to:

■ Co-create value through large-scale collaboration

■ Distribute value where it is needed

■ Redistribute revenue to all contributors, in proportion to their contributions.

Page 38: We are sensorica december 2016

SENSORICA - an Open Value Network (OVN)

The SENSORICA OVN rests on a unique IT infrastructure, and uses governance and methodologies tailored for network production. It turns networks into formidable economic agents of comparable merit to corporations and co-ops. Data shows that the OVN model is on a path to become an important catalyst of local and international economic development.

Page 39: We are sensorica december 2016

OVN: Revolutionising Open Source

predictability and accountability

Page 40: We are sensorica december 2016

OVN: Helping Traditional Institutions Transition

The OVN model helps traditional organizations form larger collaborative ecosystems in order to:

Cut costs by mutualizing resourcesIncrease the speed and the quality of innovationFacilitate transactionsStreamline logistics

Page 41: We are sensorica december 2016

OVN: Helping Traditional Institutions Transition

SENSORICA has prototyped mutually beneficial relations with traditional institutions: government, academia and the private sector. These relations constitute bridges between the new collaborative economy and the traditional one, allowing for a smooth economic transition.

Page 42: We are sensorica december 2016

Advancing OVN

New p2p technologies like Blockchain, IPFS and Ceptr allow OVNs to scale to epic proportions yet significantly reduce operational costs. We are again at a turning point in the development of this new production paradigm. In order to fuel the transition to a much larger capacity, SENSORICA needs funding for its physical lab in Montreal and for the improvement of its IT infrastructure.

Acknowledging Open Networks

Open networks must be acknowledged as legitimate organizations able to undertake complex activities, with high efficiency, predictability, and accountability. Open networks have given the world Linux, Mozilla Firefox, Blockchain technology, 3D printing and consumer drones, among many other things. Informal small-scale networks have always existed and are an important element of our socio-economic fabric. Large scale, Internet-enabled networks have been under development for over two decades. Over time, they have built infrastructure for resource and process management, governance and methodologies. SENSORICA is an important player in this development.

Page 52: We are sensorica december 2016

Acknowledging Open Networks

Today, some networks are more predictable than corporations for their activities and output. SENSORICA is leading the way in turning open innovation networks into effective economic agents, by proposing the Open Value Network model (OVN). Governments and other traditional institutions are still struggling to recognize networks and to interface with them.

■ The fund for development and maintenance are held by ACES-CAKE, the Custodian, a non-profit organization registered in Quebec.

■ SENSORICA is a non-registered association of affiliated freelance individuals, organizations and networks.

■ The affiliates form a council and create a project governance document, which will guide their conduct and the decision making processes based on the initial planning, the mission and the vision of the project.

■ The project is executed by the affiliates of SENSORICA

Page 64: We are sensorica december 2016

Governance for Managing the Funds

■ The Custodian signs a Custodian agreement for all the affiliates, guaranteeing a formal process for the allocation of the fund, according to a development plan previously agreed upon and formalized by the affiliate council, based on priorities, and on the accomplishment of pre-established milestones.

■ All material assets purchased with the fund will legally belong to the Custodian, guaranteeing access to all affiliates, in perpetuity, based on SENSORICA’s access rules.
