DESCRIPTION

Since it was formed in 1988 by a small group of dedicated founder members who initially ran things from their kitchen table, the SfEP has grown into a limited company with a London headquarters run by three office staff. We currently have 1800 members and associates who provide editorial services to publishers and a wide range of companies, government agencies and other bodies. The SfEP provides training courses for individual editors and proofreaders and to organisations as diverse as Pret A Manger and the House of Lords. Many publishers trust the SfEP directory as a reliable source of skilled, experienced editorial professionals. The SfEP's aims are (in this order) to: - promote high editorial standards - uphold the professional status of editors and proofreaders - encourage the use of services offered by SfEP members and associates. Now that the SfEP is well established, what should we be doing to better achieve these aims? What can we learn from other professional bodies? Is there anything we need to change? The SfEP Council is currently considering these questions, and this slide deck accompanied a session at our conference where delegates were given the opportunity to discuss initiatives such as the new upgrade process and editorial syllabus, as well as ideas arising from Council's strategy meeting in June.
