“MAKING DO WITH THE WORLD AS IT IS AND ADAPTING YOURSELF TO GET TO WORK” – From Getta A. Long PhD. Let’s face the truth. The world is what it is and all of the could of, should of and might of will not change it nor help your current needs. In fact, it is up to you to go the extra mile, make the extra effort and to then work harder than the person who doesn’t have barriers. That’s the reality of your situation and the soon you accept your mission, the sooner you will achieve employment. It is very easy to give up, to blame society and use the difficulty of the situation as your excuse for doing nothing…”No one will hire me!” “No one will hire me!” is a very easy way to shut down any conversation with case managers, friends or family because they will be hard pressed to call you on this. It becomes a very seductive way to avoid painful conversations that focus on what you believe is your failure(s). It becomes so seductive that you start to believe it too. The problem is that once you start to buy in on the concept, it becomes truth but, is it reality? The answer is to you, for friends, family and support team it becomes a false reality. The question to ask is complicated because you must be truthful with yourself about how much of this is true and how much of this was your fabrication to protect your feeling and/or to get people off your back. The real answer is that it is not. The real answer lies in the fact that you let your past experience(s) or one or two recent experience(s) prevent you from moving on with your job search and thus your life.

TIPSTER: Preferred means just that…it is on their Santa List…even then; did they say that they NEED professional experience? Didn’t think so…So say for a

Page 8: 10 dec 2013

dishwasher job…if you grew up poor and have raised a family; the correction answer is: “Yes Sir, I do have experience, in fact, I have been cleaning dishes all my life…” It is important to put this out there…it plants an image…that you can do the job. They want you to have the ability to do this. They are NOT looking for a seasoned professional; they are going to make a decision for this position based upon motivation (why do you want to work for us?) and equally, on your availability to work the days/hours that they need you. If you are a pro…walk up the street one more light and apply at the AZ Biltmore…they will be impressed by your pro experience.

TIPSTER: Did I ask you how many times that you did these things? Did I ask if that was the primary focus of the job? Did I ask for a breakdown of how much of your day was spent doing these? THE ANSWER TO EACH IS NO. The computer will be scanning your application for these words. The way that this works is that the more times that the computer finds these words/phrases, the better your chances of getting an interview. So are these words in your job description(s)?

SO ALWAYS USE THE FULL JOB DESCRIPTIONS. READ THEM SEVERAL TIMES…TEAR THEM APART. PULL OUT ALL OF THE REQUIRED SKILLS AND THEN, GO THROUGH EACH OF YOUR JOBS AND MATCH UP WHAT THEY NEED AND WHAT YOU HAVE DONE… THAT’S ONLY IF YOU REALLY WANT THIS JOB? TIPSTER: The reason you need to do this is because a computer will scan your application to see if you have the required skills. The computer does not reason nor does it understand that what you did was the same thing – unless you tell it. The computer is like a six year old (bright but stupid in using logic). You need to be using the company’s key words and even the way they phrased the requirements. Only people who have done this will be selected by the computer to be reviewed by a real person. Don’t be like the computer, use common sense in filling out the application correctly. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

COMING SOON DUDES! This is a newly opened River North Mexi-club. What does El Hefe Super Macho Taqueria mean? I’m assuming it translates to “long [bleep] ing line,” since that’s where I found myself standing at 7 p.m. on a Sunday. While hulking guys with expensive sunglasses were cherry-picked for admission ahead of me and my friend, I found myself growing increasingly frustrated and momentarily abandoning the line to use a Starbucks bathroom. After 45 minutes, salvation came in the form of a friend of my companion—they had previously worked for a restaurant and nightlife group together—who recognized my pal and ushered us through the doors. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You need to go over there with you “A” Game or do not waste the trip!
