Common Misconceptions
• No, you do not need a Green Card if you’re on a student visa
I need a Green Card to work in the United
States
I don’t need Work Authorization
Work Authorization is Expensive
I cannot work while I’m still in college
• While you don’t need a Green Card you will definitely need work authorization
• Getting work authorization requires filing a lot of paperwork but is usually not expensive
• You can work part-time while still in college although there is a limit on the number of hours

3 Key Steps Before You Begin Your Job Search
Visit your college’s International Office and setup a meeting with an advisor.

Make an appointment with Career Services to learn about the resources they have to offer.

Begin to gather the necessary paperwork. This often is tedious and takes time. Start early.

• Evaluate your interests• Identify industries / job functions that you’d like to explore
Map your interests to potential jobs

• Read news, research, magazines about the industry• Develop a voracious appetite for information on the industry

Concluding Thoughts
• Communicate your unique immigration needs to your potential employers early. The sooner they understand your needs, the easier it is for them to bring you on board
• Maintain a line of communication with your college’s International Office and Career Services

• Don’t underestimate how long this will take• Not a huge deal if you’re working on OPT, but if
you’re transitioning to a H1-B there are usually more requirements
