Specific Information (Summer Students)

Main Field of Study Information Technologies / InformatiqueSecondary Field of Study Mathematics / MathématiquesTertiary Field of StudyWhat is your motivation for applyingfor this position?

It was at the age of 10 years when I first read about particle accelerators. I couldn'tentirely grasp the purpose of the world's largest physics lab but already then I wasamazed at the monstrosity of 27km long collider beneath Switzerland.

My high school was a "graveyard" to my joy of natural sciences. In favor of other"non-natural" studies, it muted the physicist deep inside me - who stayedsuppressed for many years.

In January 2013, nevertheless, my passion for physics was reignited. After an examby my professor Martin Loebl, we had a discussion about my plans for future. Thequestion of diploma thesis also came up. In the end, I was offered a topicconcerning "Quantum algorithms and their topological models".

It became more and more obvious that physics (together with computer science andR&D in general) may lead to my ultimate professional specialization. Immersing intobooks by such authors as Polkinghorne, Feynman or Einstein, I slowly yet graduallybegan to re-discover the beauty of physics.

Meanwhile, I had the honor to meet Mr. Filip Bartek: a neighbor in my dormitory, analumnus of CERN's Summer Student Programme 2013, and currently, myschoolmate. He pointed out the availability of internships for Computer Sciencestudents in CERN. Consequently, this evoked my dream of spending summer there.

In conclusion, my desire is to be part of this breath-taking international environment. To learn from world's leading experts & gurus of physics & industrial computerscience. To share this wisdom with other scientific aficionados from all over theworld.

Within your studies, which are yourpreferred topics for gaining workexperience?

To be completely honest, I do not have any huge expectations: employment atCERN is a lifetime opportunity, and therefore, already a tremendous reward!Nonetheless, if I were asked to list my job preferences, I would definitely mention (indescending order):

- physics large scale or GRID computing- optimization- design of state-of-art technologies and ad-hoc solutions for CERN- data collection, acquisition and processing

I'm also looking forward to attending physics lectures for summer students. I'mcertain that it will be both thrilling and gratifying adventure. Especially, I'd love tolearn more about quantum mechanics (perhaps even about quantum computing),Standard Model and string theory directly from world-class professionals in thesefields.

Describe any relevant work or socialexperience obtained during yourstudies, training periods or visitsabroad

In high school I regularly competed in Mathematical Olympiad competitions, whichimproved my problem-solving skills. Nearly each time I was ranked among topstudents of regional rounds. In 2009 and 2010 I also participated in national roundsand in the first year I ended up as a succesful contestant, that is, one of top"mathletes".

At university, I earned the merit-based scholarship on an annual basis, andeventually, graduated "Summa cum laude". Additionally, I also attended moreadvanced classes for graduate students, especially in the field of mathematicaloptimization. For instance, "Optimization Processes", "Dynamic Programming" or"Mathematical Programming and Polyhedral Combinatorics".

For past 7 months, I've been working as a part-time R&D engineer for Prague'sWatson Research Lab, which is the Czech branch of IBM's Research Division. Ourteam is supervised by IBM Fellow David Nahamoo (located in Yorktown Heights,NY, USA), with whom we communicate on a weekly basis. Our project assessmentregards natural language processing and mobile computing.

Have you ever worked at CERNbefore?

No

If yes, for how long (in months)? How many years of full time study atuniversity level will you havecompleted by the summer of yourstay at CERN?
