Data gathering and experimental technique

Basic scientific skillsObservation used in gathering data about an object or event, which is usually obtained through your senses.Qualitative or quantitative.sensesNumbers and measurement

Examples:Describing the hair of your seatmate as black or straight.Describing the shape of the football field.

communicatingEnables you to describe an action, event, or object through words or graphical symbols.example:

Describing the number of your classmate with straight hair, curly hair, or wavy hair through words, table, and graphs.

measuringAllows you to use a certain measuring tool at a corresponding situation.Using a ruler to measure the length of your classmates hair

ClassifyRefers to grouping or ordering of object of objects or events into categories based on properties , criteria or existing relationship.Example:

Grouping your classmate according to hair style ----one group for straight hair, one for curly hair, and one for wavy hair.

inferringmAking an educated guess or a hypothesis based on a previously known fact or information.Example:

Saying that your seatmates hair is black because her parents hair are also black

PredictingAbility to state an outcome of a future event based on a pattern of evidence.Example:

Predicting the ratio of straight hair and curly students in the other classrooms based on the data from your classroom.

The international system units

Measuring various quantities

massPertains to the amount of matter a certain object contains.Small quantities, you can use the unit gram (g) in expressing mass.mass can measure using either beam balance or an electronic balance.

Beam balanceElectronic balance

lengthIt is the distance between two specified points. The si unit for length is meter (m).Centimeter (cm), Kilometer (kl), inches (in), foot (ft), and mile (mi).Common laboratory apparatus are meter stick and metric ruler.

Meter stickMetric ruler

temperatureRefers to the hottest or coldness of a body or an environment.Si unit is kelvin (k), however in our country, the common is Celsius (C )Common apparatus is thermometer.

Thermometer

timeMeasure of duration of events and interval between them.Si unit is second (s).Stop watch is used to measure time.

Digital Analog

volumeThe amount of space occupied by an object. The si unit for volume is cubic meter(m3).Cubic centimeter (cm3), milileter (ml), and , liter (l).apparatus are beaker, graduated cylinder, pipette, and volumetric flask.
