INNOVATE”Innovation is an expensive process; significant resources must be expended to initiate, direct and sustain it. It is a process that takes time, which means that the resources that support it must be committed until the process is complete. Finally, its outcomes are uncertain so the returns to innovative investments are not assured.”
(O’Sullivan, 2005: 240)
DISRUPT“A disruptive innovation allows a whole new population of consumers access to a product or service that was historically only accessible to consumers with a lot of money or skill. Once a truly disruptive product or service takes root in simple applications at the bottom of a market it can move relentlessly up market, eventually displacing established competitors.”
SHARE OF HEARTSThe percentage of consumers who identified the competitor when responding to a question asking them to name a company from whom they would prefer to buy a product.
Innovation and disruption are similar in that they are both makers and builders. Disruption takes a left turn by literally uprooting and changing how we think, behave, do business, learn and go about our day-to-day.
