Introduction

For starters I would like to WikipediA for the definition of BI: Business intelligence (BI) is a set of theories, methodologies, processes, architectures, and technologies that transform raw data into meaningful and useful information for business purposes. BI can handle large amounts of information to help identify and develop new opportunities. Making use of new opportunities and implementing an effective strategy can provide a competitive market advantage and long-term stability.BI technologies provide historical, current and predictive views of business operations. Common functions of business intelligence technologies are reporting, online analytical processing, analytics, data mining, process mining, complex event processing, business performance management, benchmarking, text mining, predictive analytics and prescriptive analytics (all credits for this definition go to the people who made this article on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_intelligence).

I agree with this definition, but it is and remains a definition. Far more important is how to implement BI in your company and what will be the benefit and the ROI for your when doing this correctly. And than we come to the real question: What is the correct BI model for my company?

An answer on this can only be given when knowing your company very well and when a top-to-bottom model has been studied together.

One of our partners was looking for a transparent and easy to understand reporting solution for their management and head of departments.

After the intake we understood that the required information was decentralized in the company and its different plants.One of the first steps was to set up several meetings with key-users, head of departments and managers to analyze their specific needs and how they integrate this in one common data warehouse model.Once we had this information we started to work out a top-to-bottom vision that had to be approved by our partner before we could continue with the next crucial step: gather all the information and centralize it into a well-structured data warehouse.

Step by step we created the necessary dimension, hierarchy and fact tables. During this phase we had several meetings with the partner. A permanent feedback was crucial for the success of this project because we needed to keep the focus at any time on the integration of the data from across the enterprise and the delivery of the agreed deliverables:• High-performance and self-service reporting• Just in time data for the managers and business users

Once the data was in place and the corresponding analysis services (cubes, hierarchies, …) were developed we could start developing the predefined presentation layer (SSRS).

Depending on the departments (production, finance, marketing, ICT, sales, …) and the management level we created the appropriate dashboards. At any level of the company, people were able to consult their proper data, statistics, forecasts, production evolutions, … based on a centralized data platform. So everybody saw the same data from a different business need.

The POST data analysis is almost behind us now (although the partner can continue at any time to extend the existing models) and we are now at the start of data mining and future analytics and predictions.
