This project in Sanford, Florida was inspired by the vernacular spanish-style stucco homes in this city in the northern suburbs of Orlando. How-ever, the construction materials were modernized to include exterior walls of factory cast concrete panels and a hollow core concrete panel roof structure with a green roof system.

Sawmill K-8 Master Plan (2007)Flagler County School Board:

Numerous iterations were developed for this Master Plan of a new K-8 school with 1500 student stations. The school board planners requested this study to see if the proposed site would support the required facilities.

The goal was to reuse prototype buildings from previous projects (ad-ministration / media center, cafeto-rium, and gymnasium) plus add two new 2-story classroom wings. Site program requirements included staff & visitor parking, school bus drop-off lanes, sports fields, and projected stormwater retention basins. This had to be accomplished while maintaining proper offsets from numerous wet-land areas on the site. I coordinated with the civil engineer for the devel-opers who had done the stormwater planning of the adjacent subdivision as well as our civil engineer to get a preliminary scope for the additional stormwater requirements on the site.

The project was proposed on the built and unbuilt site of Louis Kahn’s Jewish Community Center in Trenton, New Jersey. My design grew from the role of the baths and that of water as separating out impurities. The progression through the building spaces functions as a filter, marking the transition from the outside world to the place of the ritual. The three states of water informed the qualities of these major spaces as well as the circulation between them.

The space of contemplation developed through the molecular, crystalline expression of water as solid.
