Self Checkout Solution

What is this project about?

This project tries to answer the question

‘How might we redesign the self-checkout experience to reduce wait times, save on labor costs, prevent thefts, and utilise limited retail floor space - all without dehumanising the end user experience’

Core Idea

Design the ‘Uber’ of retail shopping.

What does this mean?

This means designing an experience so seamless and simple, that you don’t have to worry about anything at all but shopping. You just go to the store, shop and come back.

● Decrease queues: People don’t like waiting in queues. With self checkout services you can completely shift the power from the retailer to the shopper. Each shopper’s smartphone can act as a POS. This is perfect to help combat spikes in customer traffic, especially in peak hours or during holiday season

● Better customer service: The idea is to make the point of sale more pleasurable and personal experience

● Labor costs: One less cashier, one less register● Design: Traditional checkouts have a rather large footprint in retail

location and aren’t always aesthetically pleasing

Hypothesis

Advantages

● People value privacy and control, so a better technology will help

● Shorter queues at checkout

● Saves retail footprint

Disadvantages

● Humans don’t like change, we cling onto our old ways

● Self service model requires an additional step by the customers

Research

Before diving into the solution, I will post an online survey and go to H&M stores to conduct some field interviews. Also, I would conduct a Guerilla User Research.
