MacDermid – Market Driven Coatings for the Consumer Electronics Industry

Performance

Market Driven

Innovation

Our innovative products do not compromise on performance. Many of our new coatings offer higher performance than non-compliant finishes. For example trivalent passivates give improved resistance to white rust and electroless nickels can offer higher specular gloss levels.

• Electroless Nickel – RoHS compliant systems• Anti-corrosion – Cobalt-free, trivalent chromium passivation• Fashion Finishes – Dark Satin Chromium• Conversion Coatings – Chromium-free

Our primary market drivers are based on meeting both environmental directives such as RoHS / WEEE and new cosmetic finishes including satin and darker metallic coatings

The Consumer Electronics Industry Demands Coatings Free of Heavy Metals and Carcinogenic Compounds

Hazardous and toxic materials such as hexavalent chromium, cadmium and lead are prohibited by RoHS and WEEE

RoHS - The Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (2011/65/EU) bans the placing on the EU market of new equipment containing more than the agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium.

WEEE - Recycling is a specialist part of the waste and recycling industry. It is a rapidly growing sub-sector due largely to the implementation of the original WEEE Directive 2006.

Average life for consumer white goods is around 5 years. During this time the coatings resist corrosion and wear. This enables to components to maintain electrical conductivity and retain their ‘show room’ look and style even in the humid kitchen environment.

Small consumer electronics generally have a life span of 2 – 3 years. The electrical components must continue to function even when exposed to extremes of temperature and wear and tear due to daily life.
