This week’s study is also available on Northland’s apps or at NorthlandChurch.net/Studies.

God’s power to changeThis week we’re learning how God brings about changed hearts and lives and how we celebrate His transformational work.

WATCH THE VIDEO

NorthlandChurch.net/StudiesAfterward have someone read the discussion questions in the “Hear God’s Story” section and start the conversation.

Share Your StoryBegin by praying together. This should be a brief, simple prayer in which you invite God to give you insight as you study. You can pray for specific requests at the end of your time together or stop momentarily to pray if a particular situation comes up during your discussion.

Then begin your time together by discussing the following questions. • When have you experienced a newness from change in your life?• What kind of change or transformation gives you cause to celebrate?

Hear God’s Story, and Create a New Story

READ JOHN 2:1-12 (NLT) & 2 CORINTHIANS 5:16-21 (MSG)

• What kind of change did Jesus bring about to the jars of water? Why did Jesus bring about that change?

• How did people respond to that transformation?• How was Jesus able to miraculously turn water into wine? • What are the limits of His transformational power?• What does the 2 Corinthians passage tell us Jesus is about to miraculously

do to the lives of those who follow Him?• What does it take for someone to experience that kind of water-to-wine

transformation in his or her life?• What are some of the ways we celebrate God’s transformative work in the lives

of the people around us?• Who in your life has been changed and transformed by God recently?

How can you celebrate with him or her?• Where has God changed you? How can you celebrate His work in your life?

Give each person an opportunity to share prayer requests.

Find Your Story in God’s StoryIf you feel God is nudging you to go deeper, take some time between now and our next discussion to dig into His Word. Explore the Bible passages related to this session’s theme on your own, jotting your reflections in a journal or in this study guide. Want to go deeper? Select a few verses, and try paraphrasing them, writing them in your own words. If you’d like, share them with the group the next time you meet.

What makes footage of restoration work on old homes so amazing isn’t just the transformation the homes go through. It’s also amazing because so often in the before footage, the old homes can seem like lost causes. But despite all the problems with those homes, someone had the vision and hope to bring about transformation. It’s the same with us. Despite our flaws that can make us seem like lost causes – often even to ourselves – Jesus sees where transformation can restore us to newness. And Jesus can work miracles, making all things new. When He does, what an occasion we have to celebrate the difference between the before and after pictures of our hearts and souls!

READ LUKE 15:11-32 (NLT)

• In what ways was the younger son lost?• How did the father respond to the son’s repentance and changed heart?

How did the older son respond? • When have you responded to God’s restorative work in someone else’s life like the

father? When did you respond from the perspective of the older son? What can make it hard to celebrate God’s transformative work?

READ MATTHEW 14:13-21 (NIV)

• What kind of change did Jesus bring about in this story? How did people respond?• What are some ways in your life God has demonstrated His abundance to you?

What transformation has that brought about in your life? • Ultimately Jesus brings about the transformation and work needed to meet the

needs of the crowd. But first the disciples tried to do the impossible on their own. What is a place in your life where you’re trying to bring about change that ultimately you need Jesus to do instead?

John 2:1-11 (NIV)1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”

4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
