FOREVER PIONEERS

2 Hill-Murray Pioneers // HILL-MURRAY.ORG

Our FacultyLate in May, we reached out to Education Minnesota Hill-Murray (EMHM), our teachers' union, as well as, several physicians, and asked them to help us set the objectives for the coming school year.

The teachers and doctors worked with the administrative team to publish our “Blueprint” that was shared in June with our whole community. The Blueprint identified our core philosophy and objectives against which we would measure our success.

The primary objectives were to:

- Maintain our Catholic learning institution rigor that is so embedded in our mission statement.

- Develop a system that would assure every student receives teacher contact days and minutes equal to a “normal” year.

- Understand epidemiology and provide each teacher with the resources he/she would need to feel safe.

- Provide parents the comfort, but not absolute certainty,

that their children could return safely.

Our Facilities TeamThe Facilities Committee of the Board of Trustees, which included Bill Schafhauser, our Facilities Director, worked virtually non-stop from May through early August. The group spent more than 800 hours - sometimes in heated discussion - about the “right thing to do."

From the beginning, the committee provided wise guidance telling us to start reviewing HVAC systems and filters. Committee members also shared what leading organizations were already doing to address COVID-19 issues. This gave us a head start on ordering supplies, such as plexiglass and sanitizer, and allowed us to be prepared to run our summer sessions.

The New York Times Magazine had a series of articles this past fall on remote learning, vanishing resources for public schools and the inequality amongst districts.

The cover was titled “The Lost Year.”

The articles illuminated the uncertainty, political divisions and conflicting advice schools were receiving from public health professionals as they prepared to start their academic years.

At Hill-Murray, I’m proud to say our teachers, staff, students and entire community found a way to overcome the immense challenges posed by the world-wide pandemic.

Our story of success was predicated on people.

leadershipAt A Time Of Uncertainty

By early summer, it was abundantly clear we would have to make significant investments and changes to our facilities if we intended to open safely in the fall.""

2019-2020 // Annual Report 3

The Academic LeadershipBased on the Blueprint, the academic team adopted a European model. We started school early and built-in quarantine periods with additional vacation days. We did all this while maintaining the same number of instructional minutes for the year.

More than 25 school policies were revised, the daily schedule was altered, lunch was shifted to in-classroom, and all school Mass was changed to smaller groups with separated locations in the building. We evaluated every aspect of school life for safety.

McKinsey, the international consulting firm, did an analysis and concluded that the impact of remote learning projected a loss of 7 months of unfinished learning if the entire school year is online. Brown University projected that the top 30% of students would make gains consistent with expectations but 70% on average would lose a third of the progress that would have been expected.

As the committee worked this past summer, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association and The School Superintendents Association all joined together to make a statement: “We recognize that children learn best when physically present in the classroom. Missing in-person learning can have severe consequences for child health and well-being.”

Our students' mental healthDr. Julie Robinson, our Child Psychologist, developed a series of videos over the summer for students who might be struggling with anxiety that comes from isolation, family illness and the uncertainties of the pandemic. Along with our counseling teams, she has been there to work with our students to meet any mental health challenges.

Co-Curricular means it is part of the curriculumWe've always understood that the academic learning mission of the school is only part of the equation. The emotional skills developed by a deep commitment to clubs, activities and sports is essential to success. As we approached our Covid-19 planning, we strived to maintain as many co-curricular clubs and activities as possible, including theatre, music, choir and sports.

We are still NOT perfect and may never beDespite all the planning, we were unprepared for our first couple of cases, but we adjusted on the fly. We have modified our contact tracing, as well as, built an internal online tool so all departments can track data.

The last section of the BluePrint is for our lessons learned. Already, there are signs that our forced experience is developing new skills. We’re seeing that online learning does work for some students and some subjects. We’ve also found that having the ability to watch your class live when you’re home does make it easier to keep up. We also know that our staff was put under added stress worrying about their safety and adjusting their workloads to meet the demands of a hybrid classroom.

Someday, we will understand the impact on long-term learning the pandemic had on students. For this past year, I can only reiterate how proud I am to be a part of a community that collectively found a way to keep Hill-Murray students from losing a fullyear of their academic lives.

congratulations!

There are so many things to be thankful for that have directly impacted Hill-Murray over the past year, including the incredible leadership and support from our Board, staff, faculty and community.

I would like to express specific gratitude to Tim Yocum. Over the past three years, Tim has served as the Chair of the Hill-Murray Board of Trustees and given an extraordinary amount of his time and talents to the future of our school.

I am also thankful for the great work, deep commitment and thoughtful leadership from President Jim Hansen, and President-elect Melissa Dan. Together, they navigated unprecedented waters and overcame so many challenges COVID-19 presented.

I am so grateful to them and the entire faculty and staff for figuring out a smart and safe way to reopen live classes. I am in awe of their efforts. While most schools were resigned to the fact

that their students would be learning from a distance in the fall of 2020, Hill-Murray’s leadership team was determined to bring our students back.

With a commitment to safety of utmost concern, I saw firsthand how the “Hill-Murray Blueprint” was developed. The decision to include input from local physicians was critical. The depth of the plan is exceptional. The results will have lasting effects on our students, rescuing many from the malignant effects of idleness. I speak for the entire Hill-Murray Board of Trustees when I say thank you to the leadership of our school for your efforts and success in reopening. Once again, you have given our students a competitive advantage in school and life.

Lastly, I was filled with Pioneer Pride and emotion as I watched the graduation ceremonies last summer. With no notice, the lives of high school seniors were

put on hold, turned upside down and disconnected from all normalcy. One of the most important rites of passage was seemingly stripped from these seniors. The determination and work by Jim Hansen, Erin Herman and staff to provide a graduation ceremony was nothing short of heroic. This incredible act of love and leadership was met by a courageous senior class. They followed through on their responsibilities, continued to attend classes online and persevered to take the next step in life’s journey.

Congratulations to the senior class of 2020. You are true Pioneers!

Reflecting on 2020 at Hill-Murray

with gratitudeIt would be a huge understatement for me to say that I am grateful

that the school has re-opened to live classes. I am incredibly impressed and in awe of the efforts that went into the return

to school. Many schools were resigned to the fact that they would not open to live classes in the fall of 2020, while the leadership

of Hill-Murray was determined to open.

milestonesOur Pioneer Community

I can’t imagine a more appropriate nickname than Pioneers for Hill-Murray School. A Pioneer is a leader. He or she is the first to take a calculated risk, show great determination and

persevere when faced with life’s greatest challenges.

We should all be proud of how the Pioneer “community” has responded in 2020. Through leadership, careful planning, and dedicated donors, we have stepped up to face head-on the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19. I couldn’t be more pleased about our collective response and how we forged forward in times of historic adversity.

As many of you know, the Hill-Murray Foundation was established to help the school maintain its financial health and its commitment to philanthropic giving in both troubling and stable economic times.

2019-2020 // Annual Report 7

In June of 2017, we embarked on a $20M campaign to support the establishment of an endowment (scholarships and general), capital improvements, and annual operating support. In December of 2020, President, Jim Hansen, announced that the campaign had exceeded expectations and had already surpassed the $20M mark in only three years. The new goal for the campaign is $35M by July 2022. I hope you will see the impact of this campaign as you read through the enclosed report.

Finally, I must send a deeply heartfelt thank you to the students and staff of Hill-Murray School.

Our students spent the past year addressing the challenges our society faces and building plans and programs to ensure all community members are Known, Loved, and Respected. The teachers have provided exceptional education to our students and worked closely to address their personal bias, looking deep inside themselves to ensure all students are welcomed as Christ.

As a community, we came together this past year to, once again, do great things during a time of great uncertainty. I can’t thank you all enough for your unwavering support of our school, our staff, and our children.

You all personify the true definition of a Pioneer.

Commitment to Catholic Education

Roy Rueb has gifted Hill-Murray the beautiful altar and lectern that is used to celebrate God’s love at all-school Masses. Roy and his family also gifted the Virgin Mary statue that is outside the chapel. The statue serves as a visual reminder of the love Mary extends to all of God’s children, much like Mary Jo Rueb did during her 52 years. Chris Zupfer, Hill-Murray Vice President of Development said, “The Rueb family is what makes Hill-Murray special. Their commitment to each other, faith and the community is unwavering. Every student who attends Hill-Murray is touched by the family’s generosity through Mass, the Chapel, statues and scholarships. The Rueb family will always be Pioneers!”

Being a recipient of the Mary Jo Rueb scholarship has been a great privilege. My grandmother, JoAnne Mackley, always

talks about Mr. & Mrs. Rueb with deep respect, so it has been a blessing to be a part of this scholarship and serve

others as Mary Jo Rueb did. – Lilli Mackley '12

This statue of the Holy Family serves as reminder to follow the example of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and create loving families. The Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the Holy Family on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

in our rich history For the Sisters of St. Benedict at St. Paul’s Priory on Summit Avenue in St. Paul, 1958 was a big year.

On May 10 of that year, the cornerstone was laid for a new school in a rural part of the east side of St. Paul. They opened their doors the following September to 211 ninth grade girls, naming the school after the man whose

vision for the all-girls school on the east side provided impetus for the move.

Alumni Association Board Marks A New Chapter

Archbishop Murray Memorial High School graduated its first class in1962. Twelve more classes would follow before the realities and financial challenges associated with declining enrollment spurred the merger with Hill High School, the all-boys school down the street on Larpenteur Avenue. Most historians would say that 13 years is a mere instant in the world’s course of events. But, what an argument they would receive from those 13 graduating classes of AMMHS! The legacy they created in that brief time carried forward at the merger and remains a foundation for Hill-Murray today. That legacy, the courage to begin a new school on a piece of prairie, a faith that God would carry the day, a high standard of excellence, and the Benedictine principles of hospitality serves today’s students well.

As construction was beginning on Archbishop Murray, Hill High School for boys was being established by the archdiocese under the leadership of Archbishop William O’Brady. Funded by the parishes of Minneapolis and St. Paul and a gift from the estate of James and Mary Hill, the school became a reality. On September 1, 1959, eight Christian Brothers were sent to formally open the school, which enrolled its first class of 280 freshmen and 160 sophomores.

The school established itself as an educational institution dedicated to excellence in both academics and co-curriculars and committed to the ideals of the Christian Brothers. To this day, Hill alumni speak highly about the guidance of the Brothers who taught them, the academic standards, school spirit and the camaraderie of their classmates.

In 1971, when the two schools merged, Hill boys carried those traditions with them and those standards remain a part of the foundation upon which Hill-Murray thrives today.

Successfully merging two traditions, faculties and co-curricular programs took a willingness to compromise, the commitment to succeed, and trust in God’s guidance. That first 1971-72 school year became the bedrock for Hill-Murray as it is today. New traditions, blending the histories and cultures of both schools are still woven into the fabric of the Hill-Murray community. It is a fabric rich in its texture, so durable that it has stood the test of time. We still celebrate that richness today.

Dear Hill-Murray Alumni/ae,

I was at Hill and Hill-Murray from 1966 – 1985, so I know many of you from those years, but there are many more graduates of Hill, Archbishop Murray, and Hill-Murray that I have never met. But I would like to meet you, and also past parents and grandparents, as well as faculty and staff, who still care about our school. There are also many current parents, many who are alums, who have an ongoing interest because their children are H-M students now.

Just over a year ago, Hill-Murray began the process of resurrecting the AlumniAssociation Board, and they asked me to chair the “new” Alumni Board. There aremany alums from the past who worked hard to keep our alumni connected; weare grateful for their time and effort, and we are honored to take up the torchfrom them.

I’m not an alum, but my love for Hill-Murray is clear to most people, and I am happy to accept to regenerate

interest in “our” school and all those who have been associated, including loyal supporters and others who care about Hill-Murray’s past, present, and future.

I have been working with President Jim Hansen, and Alumni Director Judy HajloSchwartz as we move forward with this exciting endeavor. I want to thank Jim,who is near the end of his term as school leader, for his energy around increasingenrollment, securing HM financially, and welcoming back alums and their familiesof the three schools that are our legacy. Judy has also been working hard to be ofservice to all of you as you have asked questions and recommitted yourselves toyour alma mater.

We completed the formation of a new Pioneer Alumni Board, and we gatheredthem together for the first time on February 11 to begin generating ideas andstrategizing to get your support and develop plans that are of interest to you. We hope to find ways to bring back together you and your friends from your own class, and those before and after you.

Watch Hill-Murray’s communications to see how you can join us in this venture. It would be fun to be together again and to be creative in engaging with fellow alumni to reconnect all of us with Hill-Murray.

We pray that you and your loved ones are well and staying healthy through thiscrazy time in our world. We aren’t enthralled by this “virtual” world and are ready to join together “in person” as soon as we can beat the virus. God bless you!

Career victory No. 500 earned Hill-Murray girls’ basketball coach Erin Herman attention, as she hit the milestone on Jan. 22 at North St. Paul. A lesser-known number–214–means even more to Erin Herman. Going back to 1989-90, her first season at Hill-Murray, she realized how she enriched 214 young lives through her love of basketball.

“I appreciate all the work of those 214 young women who made this possible,” said Herman, “When you’re young, you drive hard in the same way you did as a player,” said Herman, 57. “I mean, I still have that. But experience makes you so much smarter. You learn every kid needs something different from you.”

She grew off the court as well, advancing from social studies teacher to activities director to dean of students to assistant principal to principal. Her father, Ray, was also a high school principal.

“I didn’t think I would spend my career at Hill-Murray,” Herman said. “But I kept getting new opportunities. And I found the same qualities here that were important to my father when he was a principal.”

Herman’s mother, Lola, presented her with a commemorative basketball after the milestone victory. And on the car ride home, Herman indulged with an orange Crush soda.

“This school really is a community,” Herman said. “I’ve been lucky to spend my career here.”

“I love this. I love the whole process of coaching. I love scouting. I like the planning, I like the strategizing. I like practice. I just love the game,” Herman said.

"500 wins is a testament to Coach Herman's dedication

and goes to show that this kind of success is never accidental.

I feel incredibly lucky to have been a part of some of those wins and learn from a true coaching legend

The Hill-Murray Alpine Ski Team is available to any student in grades 7-12. In the last five years, the team has grown from nine athletes to over 50. There is no size limit for alpine ski teams, and as such, there are never any cuts of athletes. With a staff of nine coaches, they can help you begin skiing with no previous experience. All that is required to join is motivation and determination to overcome any obstacle. Ski racing is a truly challenging sport that builds personal character.

The Hill-Murray Ski Team is on the rise. The Boys team narrowly missed qualifying for the State Meet in 2020. Last season, the Girls team advanced to the State Meet for the first time in the history of Hill-Murray. The Girls team is even better this year, being undefeated in all of their races this season. The Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity squads are both undefeated. Our Girls team is turning heads and the St. Paul Pioneer Press ranked the Girls team 4th in the State. According to Coach Shipp, both teams have a very good chance of advancing to the State Meet this year. The team’s theme is to try to ski with confidence and humility. Setting goals and working toward them is what really matters.

HM: What are you most looking forward to as the new President of Hill-Murray?

MD: So many things! I look forward to leading this incredible school steeped in history and tradition. I look forward to helping Hill-Murray innovate and evolve to serve today’s students, especially when we can get a bit back to normal. It was challenging to start at a new school in the middle of the pandemic and all of the past year’s challenges. When I take on the reins as President this summer, I look forward to building relationships with our students and teachers, especially without social distancing and masks, meeting more of their parents, and visiting with alumni across the generations. Truly, my goal is to continue to build on the legacy of the past leaders of Hill-Murray. I want to continue to support,

innovate, and challenge our students as we prepare them to go out into the world as ethical and humble leaders guided by our Catholic mission’s core values.

HM: How do you define what it means to be a Pioneer?

MD: A Hill-Murray Pioneer is willing to lead, work hard, and face their challenges. Being a Pioneer also means being very rooted in faith, family, tradition, and a supportive community. You take care of each other. You are a light for each other, and you pick each other up in the hard times.

We know Pioneers faced hardships, and each of us will and has faced difficulties in our lives. But as a Pioneer, you are always a leader. We saw it this year in particular. We want our students to embody that Hill-Murray Pioneer spirit - in the face of adversity, a Pioneer will continue to embrace life and walk fearlessly toward every challenge.

Life is about serving others and using what God’s given you to improve the lives of others. To do this, you often are in situations you’ve never faced before - that Pioneer spirit of facing uncertainty and trying new things has never been more vital at Hill-Murray.

HM: Faith is the Foundation at Hill-Murray. How does

your faith support your leadership?

MD: Faith is the core of everything - especially as a leader. Without my Catholic faith and values, I couldn’t fulfill many roles in my life - not just as a school leader, but as a mother, a daughter, a wife, or a friend. I try always to keep my heart open to God. It’s easy to do when you are around young people everyday who inspire you to be a better person. I am incredibly grateful that I was raised in a home with a strong Catholic faith and family that anchored everything in my life. The more I’ve worked with students over the years, the more I think they are in need of the peace and calm vulnerability that comes from a strong faith.

When leading a school community, faith is everything. I have walked with students on their journeys who’ve experienced tremendous loss in their young years, and without my faith in God, I wouldn’t have the strength or hope I’ve needed at times. As a community of faith, we have a commitment to advance our founders’ Benedictine and Lasallian Catholic values. The development of each of our students’ faith is a privilege and opportunity I never take for granted.

HM: What brought you back to Minnesota?

MD: I have lived in New York and Chicago over the past ten years, and the opportunity to lead Hill-Murray and return “home” to Minnesota seemed too good to be true. My husband and I both grew up in Saint Paul, and we were thrilled to return home to where both of our parents still live (and all of our siblings, nieces, and nephews). When I got the call from Hill-Murray and visited the school during my interview process, I was so impressed with the teachers and students I met.

It will be nice to see my best friends that I've remained close with from where I attended Catholic elementary school at Holy Childhood in Saint Paul. Some 30+ years later, it seems we are closer than ever, and I attribute this to the small Catholic elementary school we spent our youngest years in. My husband went to Nativity of Our

Lord and Cretin-Derham, and we now live down the street from Nativity - where I taught Literature and Religion for seven years. Life has come full-circle, as we’ve loved our travels, but it’s good to be home.

HM: You have a long history of working in education. Can you tell us about your journey and share what drives your passion for education?

MD: The students! My entire career has been in serving the mission of schools. There has never been a day where I have not been challenged, enlightened, or learned something new. The students I have met over the past 20+ years have influenced me tremendously. They teach me how to be a better adult each day. They teach me what is important and how to check my ego at the door.

HM: How do you like to relax and recharge?

MD: The life of leading a school is one that is constant and such a tremendous responsibility. The leader sets the tone in the building, and I believe it’s vital to reflect balance, faith, and positivity in my interactions with students, faculty, and parents every day. To do this, I need to take the time to recharge, which for me means taking some time to go on a walk, read, or listen to music, which all help my brain decompress a bit. I love being outdoors and have recently taken to running along the Mississippi River to release stress and clear my mind. I rely on many tools throughout the week to help keep a balanced perspective, including prayer, writing and reflecting, and being outdoors.

20 Hill-Murray Pioneers // HILL-MURRAY.ORG

The Pioneers completed the regular season with a 16-6-3 record. The team found its stride at the end of the season, posting a 7-1-1 record in its last nine games, earning the number one seed in the Section 4AA tournament. They breezed through Irondale and Mounds View to set up a Section Championship shadow with rival White Bear Lake.

The Section Championship game turned out to be another great chapter in the history of the Hill-Murray/White Bear Lake section rivalry. Trailing 2-0 with five minutes remaining in the second period, the Pioneers got a goal from captain Charlie Strobel. Three minutes later, senior Owen Quast scored on a rush to tie the game heading into the third period. The game remained tied until under six minutes remaining when sophomore Nick Pierre scored a shorthanded goal giving the Pioneers a lead they would not relinquish. The Section Championship was the 30th in school history.

The Pioneers entered the State Tournament as the fifth-seed and were matched up for a quarterfinal game with the fourth-seeded Moorhead Spuds. The team played a fantastic game, dismantling the Spuds 5-1. Junior Jared Jensen and sophomore Nick Pierre paced the Pioneers with two goals apiece.

The win over Moorhead set up a semi-final showdown with conference rival St. Thomas Academy. Sophomore Dylan Godbout scored two power-play goals early in the first period to give Hill-Murray a comfortable lead. The Pioneers watched a two-goal third-period lead disappear and the game headed to overtime. At the 7:38 mark of overtime, Charlie Strobel scored on a rush to send the team to the State Championship game.

The 2020 season was the 19th time the Pioneers played in the State Championship game. A power-play goal from Matthew Fleishhacker gave Hill-Murray a 1-0 lead after the first period. During the second period, the Pioneers took over the ice, outshooting the Eagles 15-6 and getting goals from seniors Owen Quast and Charlie Strobel.

The teams exchanged goals in the third period as the Pioneers cruised to the State Championship. Senior goaltender Remmington Keopple backstopped the Pioneers in goal, stopping 94% of the shots he saw at the State Tournament.

Forever A Pioneer

Don Regan 1929 – 2020

22 Hill-Murray Pioneers // HILL-MURRAY.ORG

Dalai Lama has been quoted as saying; “Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects.” If I am a pebble dropped into water, Donald B. Regan was a 10-ton blarney stone boulder shot from the heavens. Mr. Regan died on October 23, 2020. The far-reaching effects of his life on this planet are too vast to be measured. To say he was a pillar of the community is an understatement.

He was the foundation.

As a person growing-up in the East Metro, I am one of countless people Mr. Regan had an effect on. He touched every stage and aspect of my life. As a boy, I played hundreds of hours of hockey in the arena he built for North St. Paul. He was a foundational figure in creating and sustaining all the schools I attended (St. Peter’s in North St. Paul, Hill-Murray and University of St.Thomas). His buses got me to school on time and delivered me home safely. His bank supplied the mortgage on my first home. I learned to play golf (not very well) at the golf course he helped to build - Indian Hills C.C. His company owned the industrial park my business is currently located in. His companies hired and invested in some of my dearest friends. He befriended my parents and told anyone that would listen they are the “salt of the earth” – which, of course, they are. And, despite the fact our lineage had virtually nothing in common, he always made me feel like I was a part of his family.

I was not alone.

There are - at least - tens of thousands of people that live/lived in the East Metro sharing in the benefits of Mr. Regan’s gifts of philanthropy and entrepreneurial skill. He did not make ripples. He made a tsunami.

Michael J. Nicklawske – Hill-Murray Class of ‘84

Ripples – More like a tsunami

Oh what a journey it has been.

Don was a man of family, faith and community and we were blessed to have him and Jean as part of the Hill-Murray family for so many years. Don and Jean’s seven children and 15 grandchildren (so far!) have graduated from Hill-Murray.

During that time Don touched countless lives and impacted the Pioneer community through his generosity and his attendance at everything from sporting events to alumni gatherings and recognition dinners. And Jean was always at his side. You could feel their love for each other and how proud they were of all of their children and grandchildren. Don always went out of his way to make people feel special and you always came away smiling after a conversation with him. Don and Jean loved people, and people loved them back. If you were at a hockey game, they would be surrounded by family and friends – and there would be lots of laughter, smiles and stories.

The strength that Don and Jean showed through their devotion to their faith was an example for all of us. They were humble before God and taught their children that the gifts you give pale in comparison to the gifts you receive.

They were Pioneers, through and through. The dictionary defines the word Pioneer as “a person who begins or helps develop something new and prepares the way for others to follow.” How fitting that the mascot of the school they loved so much would define the very thing they spent their life doing –teaching, paving, loving through their example. Showing their family and us, their fellow Pioneers, how to “travel together.”

It has been an honor for us to be included in their journey.

where we’ve been,Where we’re destined,Who we are,

we travelTogether.

2019-2020 // Annual Report 23

“Don Regan was an amazing man - amazing not in the sense that he drew attention to himself, but in his respectful dealings with the variety of people he

encountered every day. He admired and befriended the Sisters and Brothers associated with Hill-Murray and was so appreciative that Sister Claire, principal

of Archbishop Murray, hired his bus company to transport the AMM girls. Rooted in his faith and trust in God, he worked hard, he took chances, and he experienced success; and his care for others reflected his trusting relationship with God. We continue to pray for him because he believed in the mission of

Catholic education. We thank God for sending Don to us.”

– Brother Francis Carr, FSC

Regan Family Scholarship Fund

Don and Jean Regan established the Regan Family Scholarship Fund in 1997. To date, more than 210 students have attended Hill-Murray as Regan Family scholars. The fund ensures accessibility to a Hill-Murray education for families that may not be able to afford it in communities like St. Peter’s in North St. Paul, St. Pascal Baylon, Presentation, Transfiguration, St. Casmir and many other parishes east of St. Paul.

The scholarships have been named to honor those who led the school over the last 60 years. Some past staff members include Brother Martin Sellner, Frank Asenbrenner, Dr. Susan Paul, Brother Francis Carr, Sister Claire Lynch, Brother Arnold McMullen, and Sister Pat Collins. Don and Jean valued the partnership they had with these leaders over the years and the lasting impact they had on the history of the school.

The vision statement of Hill-Murray is to be a thriving and dynamic community, recognized for delivering an innovative and personalized learning experience, that inspires all of us to live our faith, honor our traditions, use our talents to serve and make significant contributions to the world. Hill-Murray Vice President, Chris Zupfer said, “Don and Jean lived Hill-Murray’s values. Faith was at the center of everything they did. The scholarship fund honors the history of Hill-Murray by investing in the students who represent our future.

Thank you for being our Sunshine

"I believe that when we step back, release a bit of the control, and allow students to step forward with

their own inquiry, it literally flips a switch in their brain that changes everything. When we encourage our

students to co-create their learning by generating authentic questions, it gives them intellectual power

and identity as an active participant and they feel they are making a difference."

love thy neighborHill-Murray’s Community Grows Even Stronger

Our students were thrust into distance learning and all of us were socially isolated from those outside of our immediate household.

The livelihoods of some of our families were at risk and their basic needs for food, shelter, and educational assistance were increasing. Our homes were forced into make-shift classrooms and workspaces, simultaneously, putting additional stress on family members. And, we no longer met in person, but rather had to adapt promptly to Zoom meetings and the virtual challenges that came along with not being physically in the same room for school, work, or checking on our family and friends.

Guided by our Catholic faith and the knowledge that we are here to serve others, Hill-Murray quickly put together a team to lead the HM Coronavirus Assistance Fund (CAF). As Pioneers, we felt called and obligated to help our HM families in need that were feeling the deep financial impact and financial insecurity caused by COVID-19. Within the first week, the HM Coronavirus Assistance Fund raised over $190,000. And as a community, we raised $279,195 total. As assistance requests came in, the response to offer support to one another was immediate and gracious. Our donors, as always, demonstrated how incredible their love and support is to this Hill-Murray community.

A total of 86 families were direct beneficiaries of the CAF. Of the 86 families, 41 were supplied with food assistance and 24 received funds for their mortgage/rent, medical bills, gas money and general needs. Any remaining funds were applied to students’ lunch accounts for the following school year. The committee also made sure that no family had to worry about their child(ren)’s HM tuition and assisted in this area, when needed.

We are grateful beyond words for how our Pioneer families have stepped up to help each other during this past year. We give thanks to God for their generosity. COMMUNITY

In the spring of 2020, the gravity of a global pandemic hit all of us hard. Suddenly, we were under a stay-at-home mandate; we cancelled events and began working from home.

“I appreciate every one of you. God Bless You and Stay Safe.”

“Hello, I really appreciate Hill-Murray’s help, thank you for all the support

at this difficult time.”

“We are deeply humbled and grateful for all of the assistance provided to our family during this time. Caring for a large family as income declines is a stressful situation. Your kindness and generosity has made it so much better.

We are so thankful for your support.”

“Dear Hill-Murray, Thank you so much the gift cards to Cub Foods. It was a HUGE help for

our family! I miss school so much!”

“I am crying, literally! I wish I would have valued my 4-years I spent in High School at Hill-Murray more than I did. I look back and know I wouldn’t be the person I am today

without the values I was taught at that school. I am so thankful; there really are no words.”

where there’s life, there’s hopeAnnual Pioneer Premiere Auction

As we look back on this time last year, we would have never anticipated that our lives were heading into a dire situation. A global pandemic was quickly turning our normalcy into uncertainty.

But, we still had hope. Hope, that together, we were going to do whatever it took to make this event happen, for our students, families and community.

The 30th Annual Pioneer Premier Auction was like no other in the school’s history. While the pandemic

challenged our ability to come together in person, it

could not stop us from coming together as a community. In typical

Pioneer fashion, the auction leadership of Kristin Rogers, Ann Langer and Jean Schreier, along with their committee members, took action and changed course. The auction moved from in-person with 700 guests to a virtual online event.

On April 25, the auction raffle drawing took place with the Roach, Mendez and Madigan families taking home the prizes. The Pioneer Premier ONLINE Auction took place from May 21 – May 30. With special thanks to our event sponsors, the many who donated items, the bidders who understood the uncertainty around sporting

events and travel, the event went forward raising an astounding $973,724. Finally, the Friends of Hill-Murray Tuition Assistance Fund is at the heart of what makes the auction such an amazing event. This year was no different as together we raised over $381,807 for tuition assistance.

The 2020 Pioneer Premier Auction turned out to be the most significant in our history. Over $250,000 was raised to ensure Hill-Murray was accessible to any student who was committed to becoming a Pioneer. As one of the only schools in the state with in-person learning, this accessibility was more important than ever. A sincere thank you to Kristin, Ann, Jean and all of those involved in making the auction of 2020 a tremendous success!

Fino a quando ci incontriamo di nuovo (until we meet again)!

Finché C’È Vita C’È Speranza – Italians like to remember that they should keep hoping for the best, even when they are in a dire situation or things look impossible.
