Welcome to the Jesuit Volunteer Corps’ FY2017/18 annual report! Within this report you’ll find stories that represent more than 10,000 leaders across the country who have been changed for good by their experience as Jesuit Volunteers.

While JVs come to us from a variety of backgrounds, they all share a passion for facing the world’s most difficult challenges with integrity, faith, and unflinching resolve. They care deeply about social justice, they aspire to discern where and how they are called to live out their lives, and they are open to having their hearts and minds changed by the work they do and the people they serve. These are young people trying to understand how to integrate these values fully into their daily lives. They are leaders, hungry to effect change in the world, but uncertain of the best course to do so. And they have humility, recognizing that they must learn and accompany before they can act and help. We take our responsibility to these young leaders seriously. As our alumni tell us, the JVC experience is one that will influence their personal, professional, and spiritual values for the rest of their lives. In fact, JVC’s role is to challenge young people at a time in their lives when they are making important decisions about their future — pursuing an advanced degree, choosing a career, starting a family — and to provide what former volunteers consistently refer to as a life-changing experience. In this way, service to others becomes a way of life regardless of whether they choose to remain in a nonprofit corporation or pursue other vocations in the public or private sector. Of course, volunteers are not the only beneficiaries of the JVC experience. Every day, our partner nonprofits are on the front lines of addressing the social and economic issues in the communities they serve. Having access to full-time volunteers who provide a continuum of services to those in need adds valuable capacity to help these organizations meet their missions. In addition, our nonprofit partners provide volunteers with the tools and training required to successfully carry out their duties. At least 75 percent of a Jesuit Volunteer’s role must be in direct service: serving directly with individuals and families to provide access to critical services and support. The support of donors and other members of the JVC community listed in this annual report makes all of this possible. With your unflinching faith in our values, JVC can sustain its mission for years to come. Thank you for all you do for us: we are so grateful for this community.

Yours,

Tom ChabollaJVC President

MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP

4

As Chair of the Board of JVC, I would like to express my gratitude to the community of current and former volunteers, families and friends of volunteers, agency partners, college and university partners, foundations and donors, the Board of Directors, and the JVC staff for supporting our mission and values. This annual report reflects the dedication and commitment of our extended community and JVC family.

Each year, JVC recruits and supports over 200 volunteers and coordinates with over 150 partner agencies. As a result, our JVC community now includes over 10,000 alumni and thousands of donors.

The support of our JVC community enables us to create a meaningful capstone year or two of domestic or international volunteer service for college graduates committed to service and social justice. It enables our volunteers to live a simple lifestyle while magnifying the meaningful, relevant amd impactful work of our agency partners. And it enables JVC to involve FJVs and the Jesuit community in providing critical support and lifechanging retreats to our volunteers as they become leaders committed to faith in action.

As the stories in this report demonstrate, JVC’s impact has a multiplier effect. Each volunteer is uniquely shaped by their JVC experience. Volunteers often end their terms of service inspired to understand and tackle the structural issues affecting poor and marginalized communities, work for justiceas leaders in their field, and dedicate themselves to a lifetime of serviceto others.

As our agency partners and JVC community know well, our work is as important today as it has ever been. Our society is and will be stronger if we can continue to create, support, improve and expand the JVC capstone experience for more college graduates and agencies. To do so, we needthe ongoing support of our community to build an even stronger and sustainable foundation.

Joan Hogan GillmanBoard of Directors

As treasurer and finance chair of the board, I am pleased to present an annual report that demonstrates our commitment to the responsible stewardship of our funds, directing them where they have the greatest impact. With over 70 percent of our revenue coming from our agency partners and over 80 percent of our funds directed toward programming, JVC is lean, and effective.

During FY 2017/18, JVC made strategic investments in its two main sources of revenue, volunteer recruitment and fundraising, while building the financial and technical systems required to manage them. These system improvements, along with a reorganization of the staffing and new leadership, have positioned JVC to carry out its mission more effectively than ever.

In a strong economy, potential volunteers have more options than ever after graduation. To meet this challenge, our staff, board, volunteers, and supporters continue to build an organization that remains attractive to young leaders seeking to commit to their faith in action. To everyone who has made this possible: thank you for helping us build a more just and hopeful world.

SERVING ON JVC’S BOARD ALLOWS ME TO GIVE BACK TO AN ORGANIZATION THAT HAS GIVEN ME SO MUCH. MY TIME AS A VOLUNTEER IN ST. LOUIS SHAPED ME SPIRITUALLY, PERSONALLY, AND PROFESSIONALLY, AND I AM HONORED TO USE MY EXPERIENCE SINCE THEN TO SHAPE AND SUPPORT JVC’S MISSION.

John Carron, Secretary, JVC Board of Directors

IT’S REALLY AMAZING TO SEE HOW MUCH VOLUNTEERS HAVE CHANGED BY THE END OF THEIR TERM OF SERVICE: HOW MUCH THEIR PERSPECTIVES AND HORIZONS HAVE BEEN OPENED, THEIR HEARTS HAVE BEEN BROKEN, AND THEY’VE GROWN AND LOVE.

F OR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER, I have dreamt of becoming a doctor. So, when I startedcollege, it made the most sense for me to major in biology. Very quickly I discovered the cutthroat nature of my chosen path. Everyone scrambled to join a research lab, shadow physicians,

volunteer at every hospital, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

As a confused freshman, it only made sense to follow suit. Consequently, this choice blinded me to some of the other options on campus. It wasn’t until a friend suggested I try out a service program called MAGIS that my understanding of how I move about the world shifted. This decision led me to JVC inSan Francisco where I serve as a case manager at the Homeless Prenatal Program.

It was through MAGIS that I could center myself amidst a busy week by exploring service optionsand social justice issues in Philadelphia. Service offered me a chance to step away from campus andacademia and focus on some of the larger issues people were facing in my own city. I was able to learnto live in the moment and get to know the stories of the people around me. It was also an experiencein vulnerability and sharing some of my own stories with them. MAGIS was my gateway into service, and it sparked a passion that I continued to follow throughout my college career.

I later got a job at a primary care office and saw some of the same elements that I observed during myMAGIS experiences through the compassion of the doctors where I worked. These physicians took ona supportive role for many of the patients. While a younger version of myself was caught up in the wayI would look to medical schools on paper, I lost some sight of the kind of physician I’d eventually want tobecome: one who focuses on forming relationships with patients. Without service I may have missedthis realization completely.

After a lot of discernment, I decided that JVC was the best next step to take in my journey. The impactof service throughout my entire college career allowed me to change the way I see and interact withothers, which is vital to my ultimate goal. I know I have a lot more room to grow, and JVC represents atime to do just that by immersing myself in the community. It’s a way to stay grounded by dedicating myself to a simple lifestyle and educating myself on ways to practice this after my experience as a JV.

I know that this year at Homeless Prenatal Program will be challenging, but it will give me skills that willeventually allow me to become the compassionate physician that I want to be.

PLAYWORKS | BOSTON, MA

Jesuit Volunteers provide provide high-quality and compassionate service to children, individuals and families on the margins. They bring with them an openness and care for all people as they help fulfill the mission of their agency placements.

Playworks, an agency partner located in Boston, Massachusetts, said, “The largest benefit of partnering with JVC is identifying like-minded young adults who are committed to service and helping the children we serve.”

As a partner for almost 20 years, Boston’s Playworks leverages our Jesuit Volunteers to expand their impact within low-income urban schools. According to Playworks, “Some of our best program coordinators, or coaches, have been Jesuit Volunteer Corps members committed to serving their community and providing hope to hundreds of children.”

Before starting her year, JV Dani Hargus shared that she can quote any line from the movie Finding Nemo and was planning to use this skill while serving as a Coach for Playworks. The joy, excitement and commitment to play as a way to bring about hope is why Dani, like many other JVs before her, are so well suited for this type of service. After graduating from Boston College, where she had a transformative week-long service trip in Huntington, West Virginia, Dani realized she needed to search for more methods to connect with others in a deeply human and compassionate way. She found her way to JVC and Playworks, where she could deepen her human connection.

Dani shared, “Social justice convinces me that there is something more beyond each individual, a force driving us to Agapic love. Service has inspired me to chase social justice through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. Poverty cannot be healed in a day, but to build upon the foundation of service and human connection has the power to steadily light up this world.”

Our agency partners can be confident that our volunteers are ready to build relationships and contribute to their mission on day one. Jesuit Volunteers contribute through love, through compassion, and through a desire to reach a higher level of understanding. The staff at Playworks agrees: “Playworks and JVC have similar values and missions. Specifically, Playworks’ core values of healthy play, healthy community, respect and inclusion align with JVC’s core values of simple lifestyle, community and social justice. Play is a fundamental right for every child and it helps build communities where children feel safe, included and ready to learn.”

JVS PROVIDE HIGH-QUALITY SERVICE

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSINCATHOLIC CHARITIES OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF MILWAUKEE | MILWAUKEE, WI

Organizations on the front lines of justice can trust that Jesuit Volunteers will step up to provide crucial capacity to fulfill their missions.

JV Briana Buch fills this critical role at Catholic Charities in Milwaukee. After graduating from the College of William and Mary in 2015, she spent two years in the corporate world before joining JVC. With Briana’s support, Catholic Charities serves additional clients, applies for more grants, and increases its overall quality of service. Due to volunteers like Briana, our partner agencies can go above and beyond what they might normally have the capacity to do.Many of our partners share that their ability to apply for more grants, serve more people, or increase the quality of service dramatically improves once a Jesuit Volunteer is on board.

“Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee – Legal Services for Immigrants Program is honored to have worked with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps for over nine years. The other staff at our office rely on the Jesuit Volunteer to provide compassionate and competent services to our clients.” With Briana’s support, Catholic Charities will serve over 3,500 clients this year.

“A major benefit we have seen is the advocacy that the Jesuit Volunteer has done on behalf of clients, working hard to connect them to the services within our office as well as beyond our office. The support of a JV has helped our office to serve many more people than we would otherwise be able to.”

JVS INCREASE CAPACITY FOR AGENCY PARTNERS

“ ...staff at our office rely on the Jesuit Volunteer to provide

compassionate and competent services to our clients.

NOTRE DAME SCHOOL OF MILWAUKEE | MILWAUKEE, WI

As a Jesuit Volunteer at Notre Dame School of Milwaukee, Marie McDonald-Hulen assists with the after school program, supporting students fromlow-income first and second-generation immigrant families.

According to the folks at Notre Dame, “JVs have brought a spirit and energy to Notre Dame that makes them incredibly willing to be flexible on the job and to support the school in many diverse ways.”

When a JV joins a local organization as a full-time volunteer, it means our partners gain an eager and curious young leader who lives and serves with others in community. Marie is no different: “I’m excited to work with young children at the primary school. It will be somewhat new for me, and I think it will be humbling and fun. I’m also really looking forward to learning about the classroom and the education system. I would like to go to law school and work in policy reform.”

JVS CREATE STABILITY FOR AGENCY PARTNERS

“ JVs have brought a spirit and energy to Notre Dame

that makes them incredibly willing to be flexible on the job and to support the school in many diverse ways.

Jesuit Volunteers serving at Notre Dame School join an organization highly aligned with the values of JVC. According to the school, “In many ways we feel JVC and Notre Dame have missions that support one another, which makes this partnership all the more beneficial.”

About the SchoolNotre Dame Middle School was founded in 1996 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame to fill the education void in the rapidly growing, low-income, Hispanic neighborhood on Milwaukee’s near south side. Beginning with 26 students, the school now operates a primary school and an all-girls 5th to 8th grade program. The primary and middle schools now operate asNotre Dame School of Milwaukee.

ROOM IN THE INN | NASHVILLE, TN

By partnering with Room In The Inn, Jesuit Volunteer Corps is able to place a JV on the front lines of social justice within shelter and transitional housing. The nonprofit provides programs that emphasize human development and recovery through education, self-help and work, centered in community and long-term support in Nashville.

Nashville’s Room In The Inn provides programs that emphasize human development and recovery through education, self-help, and work. The organization’s core values of spirituality and the practice of love contribute to their approach of providing hospitality within a community that practices non-violence. These values are what aligns the mission of JVC with the work of the Room In The Inn. The nonprofit first became an agency partner in 2009 when Lucia B. Reed and Paul Palumbo were placed as Jesuit Volunteers there.

Serving as a member of the education team, Jesuit Volunteer Courtney Romans provides support to clients accessing resources at the day services center, as well as through campus training programs, the career center, and café. Courtney reflects on her experience as a volunteer at Room In The Inn: “This past year, I have seen the humanity so rarely associated with homelessness. Being in this community makes me want to work harder for our participants and to give them all the support that I can. Our community is so special because of the unconditional love that is found here. I know that I will always be a part of the community I’ve found here and that the lessons I’ve learned will stay with me for life.”

Fr. Charles Strobel founded Room In The Inn in the winter of 1985 by opening the doors of his parish to individuals seeking sanctuary in the church parking lot. Now, the organization coordinates with nearly 200 congregations and over 7,000 volunteers who shelter almost 1,500 men and women from November 1 through March 31 each year.

BROOKLYN JESUIT PREP | NEW YORK, NY

Having diverse members of the team is important for any staff to thrive, stay innovative and problem-solve. Partner agencies like Brooklyn Jesuit Prep in New York benefit from the fresh insight, new experiences, and youthful thinking of their Jesuit Volunteers.

JV Gilma Bernal is one such volunteer. She joins JVC from the University of California, Los Angeles, where she earned a degree in Psychology and a Minor in Education. At UCLA, Gilma was a Resident Assistant, involved in student government, and served on Executive Board for UCLA’s Model United Nations team. Each of these experiences proves useful as she servesBrooklyn Jesuit Prep’s community of “low-income families of diverse races, ethnicities and faiths in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.”

The school’s mission to develop young leaders who are intellectually competent, open to growth, loving, religious and committed to doing justice aligns with the values of our Jesuit Volunteers. Brooklyn Jesuit Prep shares, “The Jesuit Volunteer always brings enthusiasm and passion to the school. They tend to be the first to raise their hand when something needs to get done, and this energy is infectious.”

ALUMNI FEATURES

Jesuit Volunteers join a community of over 10,000 alumni committed to faith in action. Former Jesuit Volunteers do amazing things: they serve the public interest as members of Congress, found and lead organizations at the forefront of social change, heal bodies and minds as medical professionals, advocate for justice as lawyers and judges, and continue to work with the poor and marginalized.

Local alumni chapters exist in most major U.S. cities, serving as hubs for ongoing personal and professional development, spiritual formation, activism, and community. Through these ongoing connections, our volunteers are able to incorporate the values and experiences of JVC into their daily lives well after they’ve finished their service.

In August 2005, I drove away from the gates of New Folsom Prison for the last time as a Jesuit Volunteer. My year in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps was hands down the most transformational experience of my life. It is an experience from which I regularly draw new wisdom, inspiration, and self-understanding.

As a full-time prison chaplain, I learned how to actively and effectively share Christ’s love and compassion to the male inmates of the maximum-security prison. I also learned how to show this love and compassion to the administrators, correctional officers, and other prison staff. What most astounded me was the profound love and care that several of the men inmates showed me.To this day, I consider the C-Yard chapel in New Folsom Prison to be the place where I feel mostsafe physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Since completing my year in JVC, I’ve lived in six different cities and the bulk of my professional career has been dedicated to high school and university campus ministry at Jesuit institutions. This work and ministry have surely been life-giving. However, as I continue to listen to the desires that lie deepest in my heart, I return to prison over and over again. The desire to serve men in a prison was planted in me as a Jesuit Volunteer and simply has not left.

Therefore, my plan is to respond to this desire and to take a leap of faith this summer. I will move to Sacramento and pursue work in prison ministry. As the old JVC motto says, I truly was “ruined for life.”

RETURNING TO HIS JVC ROOTS

THIS YEAR HAS HANDS DOWN BEEN THE MOST DIFFICULT ONE OF MY LIFE.I’VE FAILED A LOT THIS YEAR, BUT THROUGH IT I’VE GAINED A LOT OF PERSPECTIVE.

THIS UNCOMFORTABLE WORK HAS TRULY PLUNGED ME INTO THECOMPLEX REALITIES THAT COME WITH FORGING A SUSTAINABLE PEACE.

W HEN I ACCEPTED THE INVITATION TO BE A JESUIT VOLUNTEER in Managua, Nicaragua, little did I know that saying yes to this opportunity not only marked the beginning of a few years of service, but a continued commitment to the vocation of teaching and a life centered around Ignatian

ideals. As a JV, I lived in solidarity with those I served, grew as a teacher, and learned that being a person for others requires much empathy, grace, and humility.

Now, in my 15th year as a Spanish teacher at Gonzaga College High School in Washington DC, I am dedicated to being an Ignatian educator. Whether teaching verb conjugations, coaching cross country athletes, or striving to maintain a heathy and collaborative work environment as the Chair of the Modern Language Department, I am constantly reminded through every success and obstacle that God is present within me and my school community.

The experiences I had as a JV have helped to form who I am now as a teacher and person. As I continue my journey, I am grateful for my time as a JV, as well as the large network of alumni who share in the experiences of living simply, building community, working for justice, and believing in faith-based action.

BRINGING JVC VALUES INTO THE CLASSROOM

There is a strong connection between JVC’s approach to forming young leaders during their term of service and Jesuit methodology for educating the whole person. We thread this holistic approach throughout retreats and within intentional community as we share practices for self-reflection and prayer with Jesuit Volunteers. Our FJVs carry these lessons with them throughout their careers as educators and school administrators.

I ATTENDED CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY and earned my Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. A semester of service my junior year at an orphanage for children with disabilities in the Dominican Republic sparked my interest in education and advocacy

for people with disabilities. This is why I applied to JVC, and I was fortunate to be placed at my top choice — Respite Care of San Antonio.

I was the Lead Teacher for a childcare and respite center for low-income families who had children with disabilities. This experience solidified my desire to pursue special education, and I earned my Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Texas at Austin. I got my first job at a Title I school, teaching bilingual first grade.

It was an extremely challenging year, but JVC prepared me well for teaching in a culturally and socioeconomically diverse environment. I then took a job at an inclusive preschool, where children with and without disabilities learn side-by-side in the classroom. I taught for four years in this model before becoming the Executive Director of the same model in Denver, and I am currently halfway through my seventh year as the Director.

I can confidently say that if I hadn’t taken the leap to apply to JVC, my life would look very different right now. Knowing that my work makes a difference in the lives of many students and families is very fulfilling. JVC was definitely a turning point in my life and the best career move I have ever made!

M Y EXPERIENCE as a Jesuit Volunteer teaching at St. Xavier’s School in Kathmandu, Nepal, has impacted my entire life. Not only was it my first teaching job; it taught me more about myself than any other experience I’ve had before or since (with the exception of motherhood!).

The poverty in Nepal is as staggering as the beauty of its landscape. My eyes were opened to the privilege that had simply been given to me throughout my life. I was overwhelmed with gratitude, conviction, and a desire to help. For everything I gave, however, I received ten times more — in generosity, in spirit, in self-knowledge, and in joy.

A huge part of my experience was being a Catholic in a country of primarily Hindus and Buddhists. This taught me a deep respect for other religions and for other people’s beliefs, and made me realize the common values we all share. While there, I also embarked on a lifelong study of presence and mindfulness, a gift that has guided my life to this day.

All of this comes into my teaching practice. Currently, I teach tenth grade World Literature at Abington Heights High School in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, and I find myself constantly referring to my time in Nepal. Every time I do, hands shoot up: students want to know more about the people, the place, and the experience of serving and living in somewhere different. My time in Nepal continues to inspire new generations.

Two years ago, I started an ESL Conversation Group with local volunteers and refugees. (Scranton has a large refugee population — some of them Nepalis from Bhutanese camps — who come here through Catholic Social Services.) We meet every Sunday at our public library. Our group has become so much more than English instruction; it is about people connecting and being present to each other. Part of the impetus for this program stemmed from my memories of Nepal — everyone there was so kind and hospitable to me, an outsider who could not speak the language. I started our group as a way to return the favor.

As 2019 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year, I will travel the state with the message of the importance of educating the whole person and the necessity of nurturing “human” skills such as compassion, creativity, and connection. The Jesuit influence is obvious.

Right after I returned from Nepal, an older teacher at my new job told me, “You don’t realize it now, but that experience will profoundly shape the rest of your life in ways you can’t even imagine.” I thought I did realize it at the time. But with every year that passes and I find myself seeking deeper ways to lead, serve, and inspire, I see how right she was.

A FTER BECOMING THE FIRST PERSON IN MY FAMILY to graduate from college, I joined the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and worked as an Assistant Teacher at St. Peter’s School in

Boston, Massachusetts, which served immigrant children from Cape Verde and the Caribbean. My Jesuit Volunteer year truly “ruined me for life,” because it awakened me to the structural roots of exclusion that millions of people in our country endure every day. JVC challenged me to orient my life around the work of becoming an agent of liberation, and provided a path for a vocation dedicated to forming “emancipatory practitioners” who are writing a new future for our cities and country.

I am deeply moved by Pope Francis’s proposition to the faith community to be “a field hospital for the broken and wounded of our society.” JVC provided me the foundation that has allowed me to dedicate the past 14 years of my life to the Faith in Action Network (formerly PICO National Network) as a Community Organizer and now Co-Director. Every day I get to accompany everyday people in congregations and communities in their struggle to build power and radical kinship for racial, economic, and environmental equity across California. Recently, we organized to win Senate Bill 54, The California Values Act, which became the country’s strongest legislation protecting thousands of immigrant families from deportations, and opening new pathways to rehabilitation for ex-offenders.

Powerful forces in our country today are erecting physical and ontological walls that prevent us from fully seeing each other in all of our immense value. And this inability to fully “see” each other is not just a political problem. It is fundamentally a spiritual journey that requires each of us to go to the depths of our being, to challenge our assumptions and understanding about the “other” in our midst.

The Jesuit Volunteer Corps is the ideal place for young people to venture down this journey into the depths of their being. If JVC has done its job, Jesuit Volunteers leave their time of service better able to “see,” and better equipped to be bridge builders who are creating a world rooted in radical kinship and revolutionary love.

D OING JVC WAS ONE OF THE MOST FORMATIVE experiences of my life. Over the course of a year (and then a second year — so nice, I did it twice!), JVC broke my heart open and allowed me to deepen my understanding of

the links between faith and justice; between community and simplicity; between vulnerability and feeling fully alive.

In my first year’s work with young adults with developmental disabilities at STRIVE,I encountered individuals who were as quick to forgive and offer a classic joke(What do you call a snail on a ship? A snailor!) as they were to express their frustrations with me, the challenges they faced, and a world that didn’t readily embrace the awesomeness of their humanity. Between my vibrant JV community and the STRIVE members I had the privilege of working with, I learned how to live with authenticity.

In my second year at Jesuit Refugee Service/USA, I learned that I could work for justice just as much from an office desk in Washington DC as I could at rallies in the community. Organizing and informing communities about the realities of people being forcibly displaced worldwide solidified my vocation and led me to the work I do today as a program director at Ignatian Solidarity Network.

While JVC was a sometimes imperfect, sometimes messy experience, I am confident that it also has made me into the person I am today. It introduced me to a community of FJVs with whom I know I can enter into a thoughtful, humor-filled conversation about our time in the program. It introduced me to community mates whom I am still honored to call my friends. Most of all, it allowed me to intentionally step back from our go-go-go culture and examine how the four values invite me into a deeper, more loving experience of God, life, and the world around me.

ADVOCACY FOR IGNATIAN VALUES

J ESUIT VOLUNTEER CORPS WAS ONE OF THE MOST REWARDING, CHALLENGING, AND LIFE-GIVING YEARS I’ve ever experienced. As a business student at the University of Oregon, I thought I would climb the corporate ladder and make as much money as possible after graduation —yet I found myself in the inner city of Kansas City, Missouri, earning $80 per month while serving the poor and growing in my faith through JVC.

Helping homeless women find jobs and working as a case manager for their children gave me perspective on the cycle of poverty and brought me joy inseeing the love shared between these single parents and their children.

JVC made me want to work for a greater good, which led me to spend the past 14 years raising money for worthwhile causes. I am currently the Director ofMajor Gifts at Regis University, which allows me to use my business skills to help fund scholarships for first-generation students and send University Ministry on life-altering immersion trips. JVC made a few bible verses ring true; to whom much is given, much is expected — which makes me want to try evenharder to serve the least of God’s people.

I was at a happy hour one night eight and a half years ago when a young woman, Lauren Lionetti, said three magical letters: “JVC.” We immediately connected through our shared encounters as FJVs, and since then, have been married with two (hopefully) future JV kids running around! I will forever be indebted to JVC for the amazing memories, experiences, and relationships that make me who I am today.

W HEN I WAS A COLLEGE STUDENT, I was starting to feel drawn into religious life and I applied to enter JVC in order to try out a life centered around community, social justice, simplicity and service — the JVC values. As a JV, I served as the Youth Corps Director at

Tubman House in Sacramento, California, where formerly homeless youth were required to live in intentional community and serve their communities.

Working with them as they attended college, led service projects, and advocated for social change was energizing and inspiring — as well as intense. My time serving at Tubman was fueled by the love I found within my JVC house that year; our shared devotion to the JVC values provided the groundednessI needed to serve with compassion.

Ultimately, the relationships I gained at Tubman House and in my JVC community remain influential inmy life. I remain in close contact with my former JVC housemates and have served on the Board of Directors for Tubman House/Waking the Village for over 12 years. Moreover, my time in JVC enflameda passion in me for a strong community life centered around spirituality, social justice and service. These values influenced the growth of the youth at Tubman House as well as myself.

By the end of my JV year, I knew that I wanted to continue to center my life around the JVC values and discerned that religious life could be a good fit for me; I entered the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration (FSPA) less than a year after I completed my year or service. Now, as a fully professed FSPA, I minister as a retreat and program presenter at a spirituality center and as a spiritual writer. In other words, I am called to express the values of JVC every day!

IN THE FIELDI am humbled by this opportunity to be a Jesuit Volunteer. I am grateful for the support that I receive. I exude love towards those around me far and wide. I am proud of the person I am becoming. I look forward with fear and excitement towards what is next, whatever it may be. Step into my day…

Coco and her bus come bustling down Clinton Avenue three

minutes early. We are speed-walking down our street but she sees us and will wait. The first time she saw us, she didn’t even try to hide her shock at our obvious displacement in the neighborhood. The at-first wary glances changed to morning nods, as each of us slowly washed the sleep away from our eyes. “See you tomorrow, Charlie’s Angels,” another passenger laughs as we step off the bus at Clinton and Thomas. Community.

THE DOORS AT LINK OPEN. FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADERS FLOOD IN, CHECKING-IN. I SMILE BIG, CALLING OUT TO ONE OF MY FAVORITE AND MOST DIFFICULT FIFTH GRADERS hoping that today isn’t an angry day. Another little lady runs up for our morning hug, as she does a turn so I can make sure her hair has just enough poof to take on the day. The brother duo strut in again challenging me to a push-up competition. This morning routine is a time of uniform and homework checks, and more importantly a time to look each student in the eye and acknowledge that I’m there with them. I believe that today is a good day. And I believe in you. This is my favorite time of day. Welcome.

MY KNITTING ELECTIVE. WHAT WAS FIRST A LAUGH BY MANY BECAME A LINE OF MIDDLE SCHOOLERS ASKING FOR THEIR OWN NEEDLES AND YARN. Some take to it quick, others a bit slower, and one of my most committed knitters learns again and again each week after he forgets. Scarves always seem to grow more in width than in length. It is both a social exercise and one of somber self-care. It is our time to problem solve, be with one another, and to finally understand what all our grandmothers keep talking about. Repeat. Try again.

LAYING IN BED. REFLECTING ON THE DAY. We begin and end the day alone. I breathe in and out, releasing energy to then be filled again come tomorrow. I chose this. I committed to this. I am frustrated and drained by this world. But hope remains, buried so deep and unwilling to give up. I am filled with joy, laughter, and light by those around me. Little faces, stealing my heart. Some whom have already been forgotten by those that matter most, embolden me to care.To be kind. To offer my joy and an open heart to say that you matter. You are valuable. You are strong and you are brave. You have what it takes.

IT’S BEEN NINE MONTHS IN JVC. I’ve been silent for 16 hours, 46 more to go during this silent retreat. I hear birds singing through my opened windows, cars passing by, the wind blowing, pipes tinkling. I am grateful for this time. I am grateful for this year. I witness generosity, kindness, hardship, and sadness each day. I do my best to be fully present. I fail. I am selfish and unkind. I try again. I say yes each morning, trying to utter positivity as I roll out of bed too early.I explore. I fall. I am lifted up.

My future presents itself in a blur. What is coming? Who will my world be filled with? What land will my feet touch? Passing.

INDOOR RECESS. My most dreaded time of day. Violence last summer leaves the fifth and sixth graders stuck in their basement classroom to “play.” These kids deserve the outdoors, to run and release energy. Let the kids be kids. Quiet voices should not be synonymous with recess. Frustration.

SEVENTH GRADE LIFE SCIENCE. “You’re my first best friend that is a girl, Ms. Kendall.” I walk around the room, reminding kids to sit up, being proven wrong as I try to remember cell structure, and trying to make disapproving eye contact with another student as she bops around in her chair distracting another. She giggles, then I giggle…I haven’t quite gotten the look down. Advocate.

OUT THE DOOR AND OFF TO THE GYM. The necessary self-care I need to continue each day with energy to take on 288 middle schoolers and a community of six strangers that have become my family. I run, zone out, music filling my head, and several prayers that I don’t fall off the treadmill. Breathe in. Breathe out. Let go. Start over.

HOME. A place of safety, intention, and saying yes. Six strangers in August quickly becoming a dysfunctional family come July. With different stories, histories, habits, and expectations we try our best to be kind to one another as our story crosses during this year. Sunday Business Meetings, open communication. Who is annoying who this week? Shared meals, most likely vegetable and bean stir-fry. God help me, when did we become vegetarians and dairy free? Dishwashing dance parties. Support each other, believe in one another, hold them close — they are your family this year.

LINK | NEWARK, NJ

Partnering with Link Community Charter School and Link Education Partners (Link) in Newark, New Jersey, gives JVC such pride, because we know the Jesuit Volunteers placed there are directly serving students and engaging alumni day-to-day. Link provides middle school education for learners ofall academic abilities within a challenging and supportive environment with special opportunities to bridge the opportunity gap with the arts, field trips, STEM programs, summer learning, electives and so much more.

Link expects its students to live out their values by demonstrating intellectual competence, social responsibility and commitment to their community. Link’s strong commitment to social justice and creating students who become strong thinkers and leaders corresponds well with the expectations we have of our Jesuit Volunteers. Maria Pilar Paradiso, Head of School and Executive Director, shared, “JVC has been an important partner in our work since 1975, providing volunteers who have shared their talents and passions with Link students and staff, always enriching both the school and greater community. Several JVs have done so beyond their service year at Link, continuing as full-time staff members, due to a deep commitment to Link’s mission and the Newark community. We are proud of the many former Link JVs who gave selflessly of themselves during their year of service, and went on to pursue careers in education and social work to continue the fight for a more just world.”

Since 1969, Link has played a critical role in Newark, changing the trajectory of its students’ lives and positively impacting the city through its nearly 3,000 graduates. Link has also helped change the educational landscape as former staff have used the Link experience to lead and launch many successful programs across the country. The seeds planted by the Dominican Sisters at Link have blossomed and been carried far and wide.

“Today, many Newark youth still experience low performing schools and significant academic and opportunity gaps. Link bridges those gaps through a strong academic program and extra-curricular enrichment that yield positive student outcomes. Now more than ever, Newark needs Link’s continued presence and the many partners that help make our work possible, including the Jesuit Volunteer Corps,” added Mrs. Paradiso.

The Link JVs directly support student growth and school-wide systems andprocedures, contributing to a positive school climate and a culture groundedin the Link core values. Additionally, the JVs track Link’s longitudinal impact by engaging alumni and charting their academic and career journeys.

“During the 2017/18 school year, we were fortunate to have two wonderful Jesuit Volunteers, Molly Kendall and Sara Duggan,” shared Kathy Hester, Link’s School Principal. Natalia Sardo, Strategic Initiatives and Grants Officer, added that both contributed to important work this past year. Molly Kendall kicked off an alumni engagement program as the first JV to work directly for Link Education Partners, the nonprofit that provides resources, student programming, professional development and facility space to Link Community Charter School. Sara Duggan focused on student life activities by coordinating and providing support for an enriching electives program for 7th and 8th graders, the library, book fairs, field trips and the outdoor adventure program.

Both Molly and Sara became an integral part of the Link community, attending basketball and soccer games, co-coaching volleyball, chaperoning school dances and field trips, teaching electives, and serving lunch. Mrs. Paradiso, Ms. Hester and Ms. Sardo all shared, “We wish Molly and Sara well as they venture out to launch their careers in social work and thank them for doing so much for supporting Link scholars!”

Hermana Yoli, a sister of St. Joseph, bolts downstairs eagerly telling us Papa Francisco has landed in Lima. With two-dozen little neighbors in tow, we cram together on the floor of the Hermana’s TV room. With emotion, we chant in unison “Papa! Papa! Papa!” I see a few tears falling from the adult eyes and I begin to ask myself: What does this visit mean to me?

I try to comprehend how this Papal visit comes as an antidote to disunion. It comes as a message of unity and hope for the young, the poor, the elderly, the incarcerated, the mine workers, the bus drivers, the Sisters of St. Joseph, the nonreligious, the JVs and Peru Jesuit province alike.

Two days later, I am one of the 1.5 million faithful. We’re loud, sunbaked, drenched from firefighter hoses and roaring as Papa Francisco swoops past us in his Papa Mobile. The hoopla quickly calms for the Pope’s last celebration in Peru. The Papal visit’s theme Unified for Hope and his final comments emphasize the plight of the young and the poor and condemn a corrupt politics that have rocked Latin American nations. However, he ultimately unifies us in hope: 1.5 million people stopping in their tracks in a city mired with an “indifference that makes us anonymous and deaf toward others” to simply sit with one another and think about how we want to create the Kingdom of God now, in Peru.

During mass, we listen to readings on converting a dirty, grimy city of Nineveh. It reminds me of gritty Lima or marginalized Tacna, and the Gospel about being sent to be fishers of people. “They are found along our roadsides, living on the fringes of our cities, and lacking the conditions needed for a dignified existence,” Francisco reflects in his homily, “It is painful to realize that among these ‘urban remnants’ all too often we see the faces of children and adolescents. We look at the face of the future.”

Papa Francisco’s message resonates for me as I live alongside the Sisters from the Congregation of St. Joseph and accompany the “faces of thefuture” — teaching English and working on teamwork skills through multiplication bingo and puzzles — on the fringes of Lima, Peru.

We cannot know what happens to “the face of the future” until we too respond to that knock on our door. And while I cannot answer with a quick solution to every problem my neighbors face, I can react with a listening ear.

The days following Papa Francisco’s visit, and his reflection on the city of Nineveh, I feel ready to respond to those knocks. But as time passes I find myself having a harder time staying close to my present vocation: How can I accompany one when maybe I need the accompaniment? How can I be a messenger of hope when I too need hope? How can I be love? I must not see my neighbors and the kids chanting in the TV room as simply “the faces of the future,” but pay attention to them as faces of the now. My work is to have a genuine human response to my neighbors as Papa Francisco showed Peru.

MICHAEL MICHLER | Top Box FoodsQuote by Mother Teresa of Calcutta

With Top Box Foods, I have learned to work mindfully on a daily basis, regardless of the task at hand. Whether it has been writing grants or working in our warehouse to prepare food for distribution across Chicago’s South and West Sides, attention to detail has been a particularly important quality for me to practice. The successes of this year have been built by cumulative effort — either one sentence or one pallet of food at a time. I believe that creating a more just community in North Lawndale, and Chicago as a whole, also requires an accumulation of small acts done with great love and consideration for all.

MARIA BARBA | Girls in the GameQuote by Ken Unterer (written in memory of Oscar Romero)

Fr. Ken Untener’s quote resonated with me because it captures truth to my experience as a volunteer. My time working at Girls in the Game, living in community in North Lawndale, and learning from the communities I serve in Chicago is only a piece of God’s magnificent puzzle. I don’t have to set lofty, grandiose plans to change the lives for the elementary and middle school students I see each day.Instead, I acknowledge that in my placement, I am part of a network of people who will continue to empower girls to have a voice, to promote equitable educational opportunities for youth, and to instigate positive changes in their communities — even if I won’t get to witness all the benefits of those changes bythe end of my JV year.

SARAH JOHNSON | Taller de JoseQuote by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

While accompanying clients, sometimes there are no easy solutions and very little progress. In these moments, I trust in the “slow work” and am present to them as they navigate obstacles and difficult circumstances. I hope that, even though the work may be slow, they can still find comfort and support.

F OR THIS SPIRITUALITY NIGHT, each of us (Chicago 2017-18) started with what looked like a blank white piece of paper — but the plain sheets had text written in white crayon. Because we painted with watercolors, the wax of the crayons repelled the paints. The quotes slowly revealed themselves to us during the process of covering the paper in color.

JACOB, ON HISJVC EXPERIENCE:

I’VE BEEN ABLE TO GIVEATTENTION TO CORNERS OF MYSELF

I HADN’T NOTICED BEFORE.

by Jacob Scobey (Atlanta 2017-18)

“ YOU ALREADY GRADUATED?! Well isn’t that something.”

A JV EXPERIENCE IS ADAMANTLY, INTIMATELY, PERMANENT

I smiled tightly at my dental hygienist, waiting for the inevitable follow-up questions regarding my life at the moment. She has the unusual perspective of following my life in brief yearly updates, like a distant second cousin or family friend. My annual checkups are her equivalent of Christmas card updates.

The questions came, as expected, and I gave her as succinct a summary as I could. I’m living in Atlanta, volunteering for a year with JVC, working with refugees through International Rescue Committee, and living with five other Jesuit Volunteers.

Before I could get into any of the details, she had the tools in my mouth and was scraping and prodding away, talking about this newly acquired information as she went. Admirable that I was working with immigrants.Must be powerful. Atlanta is nice, especially in the spring. Traffic is so bad, though. Seems like a lot of young people are getting into volunteer work these days. It’s the thing to do, I guess.

“But it’s a temporary thing for you, right?” she asked. “There’s no major in Volunteerism. You’ll get a job after this, right?” She pulled the tools from my mouth, expecting an answer this time. Expecting reassurance that I wasn’t throwing my education away.

Toothpaste still in my gaping mouth, teeth bared, all I could manage was a muffled chuckle and “uh huh” of affirmation. And then the tools returned.

As she continued to scrape away, I thought of all the things I’d like to explain about my year in JVC. How it’s been more than a “thing to do”. The stories I’ve heard from refugee families, far beyond “admirable.”

I thought of late night conversations with my housemates about gentrification, life after death and rankings of different types of chocolate. I thought of household water conservation challenges, of dinner recipe brainstorming, of warm nights checking out a new bar or festival. Of arguments and apologies. Early, quiet nights and lively, late ones. Of each new day at work bringing a new story, or challenge, or memorable conversation.

Part of my reason for signing up for Jesuit Volunteer Corps was not knowing what I wanted in a career. But now I realize that this experience went far beyond delaying a decision I was not ready to make. JVC has created the space for me to live more intentionally in many aspects of my life. I’ve been able to give attention to corners of myself I hadn’t noticed before.

During my time at the IRC, I have talked with people that are dealing with hunger, poverty, death, addiction, abuse, sickness. And those are the struggles they face in the United States. Few of the refugees even mention the trials that forced them to flee their home countries, trials that go far beyond the difficulties they encounter here.

Sometimes my coworkers and I can provide some level of assistance. Sometimes we can’t. The work can be rewarding and inspiring at its best, and heavy, troubling, saddening, exhausting at its worst. And in the end, like most service work, it often feels like I’m the one learning the most.My clients’ stories and challenges have widened my perspective and inspired me to try to be as strong and tireless as they are.

More of a surprise to me is how I’ve been changed by the little day-to-day moments with my housemates. Living in community has forced me to reflect on everything I do: how I budget my time, how I cook, how I clean, how I talk, how I listen. Things that I would have needed to do anyway but are so much more focused and intentional with this way of life.

So, to my dental hygienist: yes, I’m looking for a job. But no, this year and this work are not temporary. From the most trivial inside joke with my housemates to the most gut-wrenching case at work, it is becoming clearer and clearer to me that every part of this experience is adamantly, intimately, permanent.

Paying homage to our foundations in Ignatian Spirituality, JVC staff participated in an abridged version of the spiritual exercises during its annual meeting in December. Over the course of four days in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, staff spent time reflecting on their roles within JVC and the ways they might draw from the example of St. Ignatius to strengthen their work.

Retreat facilitators Fr. Kaminski, SJ, and Sr. Jessica invited staff into conversation and individual deep thinking about the suffering of Jesus and our vision of love and compassion as a human people.

Regional Manager Laura Strubeck (Syracuse 2008-09; San Diego 2009-10) is responsible for the coordination and formation of the volunteers in California, Arizona, and New Mexico. In thinking back to the annual meeting, Laura says, “I was so grateful to have the space for much needed reflection time at annual meeting. Sr. Jessica provided us with an excellent framework to engage more closely with our Ignatian roots as a staff. In my role, the formation of our volunteers is at the forefront. I found that it was so beneficial to have the time and space to disconnect to really focus on my own relationship with God.”

JVC staff were not the only beneficiaries of Sr. Jessica’s accompaniment this year. In the spring, she led an impactful silent retreat for our east coast-based Jesuit Volunteers, one of the highlights of their termof service. Sr. Jessica was one of over 25 spiritual directors that guided volunteers throughout this year.

A JV LEFT A CARD FOR ME WITH THIS QUOTE ON IT at the end of their silent retreat, after having reflected on this message and let it sink in. This is what we call the reception of grace — of God’s very

own communication with us, and each of us receives this in a particular way. There’s no “one way” to pray, to enter into that sacred space. We are each invited to discover that particular communication through our own journeys.

Accompanying JVs has been a great gift for me over these last two years. It is also an opportunity to return the good that I received as a JV and in the journey that has continued since. Accompanying each person is like being part of a story of grace that is unfolding and being explored. Ignatian spirituality teaches us to perceive the “mystical” in that which is most common: these days of prayer and silence allow the JVs to enter further into that “mystical” place of their own lives, of their experience, of who they are and who they are called to be, and to know that they are not alone. Rather, they are accompanied deeply by God and by a circle of companions much greater than that of which we are usually aware.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to witness grace at work in the lives of those who have made a concrete option to give of themselves, to seek something “more,” to commit themselves to a search for justice, and who —at the end of their year — find reasons still to hope. Here on this retreat many often discover a hunger for a new image of God, a renewed relationship that can include what they have come to see and to love and to wrestle with throughout their experience. That is the space in which we realize that being where we are in this moment is exactly where many of us are meant to be.

WHAT IS ‘SEND ME TO SERVE’?

Raise funds in support of JVC,which help us continue to partner withover 200 non-profit agenciesand provide vital service to tens ofthousands of people every year.

Help JVs and their friends and familiesto connect their friends and family moredeeply with the mission of JVC, andspread it far and wide.
