3 DOG WORLD July 2021

President’s Message

I am writing this message on 2 July, the third day of our snap lockdown across much of

Queensland. I am hoping that the contact tracers manage to get ahead of the game so that the lockdown can lift completely tomorrow.

Although we have been relatively fortunate in Australia and we have returned to more of a normal situation, we need to be prepared for the unexpected, and factor that into our day to day lives. It is encouraging to see more vaccinations happening across the nation and benefits will flow from that.

Shows and sports events have been impacted across Queensland and interstate. Hopefully many of these events will be able to be rescheduled later in the year. A bouquet to those club secretaries who are juggling arrangements and changes often at the last minute and under considerable stress. They are some of the great volunteers of our dog world, dedicating many hours of their time to ensure that our events run like clockwork.

The EkkaThe Board has decided to have a Dogs Queensland stall at the dog pavilion this year. A Paw Prints message has called for volunteers to work on the stall on half day shifts. It is a great opportunity to engage with the public about what our dog world is all about and the many ways individuals, couples and families can have fun with their dog in our many, many disciplines. So, if you would like to participate in this event as an ambassador for Dogs Queensland please contact the office as soon as possible. I suspect the spots will fill up pretty quickly. If you are successful in getting a spot remember that you need to stay on duty for the entire shift.

I would also like to thank our members who have agreed to share their expertise and steward at both the conformation shows and dog sports over the 9 days of the Ekka. It is major commitment and I know that a number of stewards take leave from their workplace to fulfil that voluntary commitment.

Board MattersAs members are aware, the Canine Control Council (Queensland) Limited is our corporate body and is a company limited by guarantee and is subject to the Corporations Act. Consequently, all of our directors have duties under that legislation, and it is so important that our Board works effectively for the good

governance of our Queensland dog world.

For this reason, we have routinely had director training with Board Matters every 2 years and following an election. It is a good opportunity for new directors to undergo the one-day training and for continuing directors to have a bit of a refresher with good, open discussions in a round table format. This training happened this last Monday with Jennifer Robertson and was well received. It was immediately followed by a Board meeting, so it made for a very long day for those attending! But very worthwhile.

Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers MeetingWe missed this meeting in 2020 but it is coming up on Monday 12 July at 7pm. We have nearly 200 affiliated clubs in all our disciplines, and this is the opportunity for members of club executives to meet with the Board and General Manager to discuss matters of mutual interest and to explore areas where additional support can be provided by Dogs Queensland to the clubs. New technology has been happening at many of our shows and events and I expect this will be on the agenda.

Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC)On Saturday, 19 June, we had a Zoom meeting of our national body, the ANKC. Although Dogs Queensland has an independent and autonomous governance, we have the benefit of working cooperatively with the other States and Territories in the ANKC. The ANKC has overarching responsibility for our national database too.

Larger States, such as ours, contribute 2 directors to the ANKC Board. The current Queensland directors are Senior Vice President, Carolyn Pearen and me. The operational costs of the ANKC are funded by the State and Territory bodies in a number of ways, including on a percentage basis, related to the proportion of members we have compared to the national total.

There are some interesting and important matters being progressed by that Board and I will keep you informed of developments as the year progresses.

Please stay safe and be kind to each other.

– Ulla Greenwood, President Dogs Queensland

The Cardigan comes in many beautiful colours and shadings. The colours found in the show ring today are red/white, tricolor, brindle of various shadings, sable, black/white and the lovely blue merle with the marbled mixture of blue, grey, and black hairs. White markings on the chest, feet, tip of tail and sometimes a collar, add to the beauty of such colours.

The Lagotto Romag

HISTORYThere is little doubt that Great Danes are an ancient breed. Evidence of Dane-like dogs have been found among the excavations of ancient Assyrian artifacts. The Assyrian culture was advanced and active in trade with other countries. It is thought that perhaps their dogs were also included in some of the exported goods as their likeness has also shown up in the artifacts of the ancient Romans and Greeks. There is a Grecian coin in the Royal Museum at Munich, which dates from the fifth century BC. It depicts a likeness of a dog which greatly resembles the Great Dane of today.

The Mastiff, Greyhound and Irish Wolfhound have all been credited as more recent ancestors of the Great Dane as we know him today. The evidence for Greyhound ancestry is apparent in the merle coloration associated with the harlequin pattern seen in the breed today. According to Earnest Hart in his book entitled, This Is the Great Dane, “…for the patchy dark-on-a-white-ground colouring of the harlequin variety, is a pattern derived from the Greyhound breeds throughout the Egyptian Greyhound, a direct descendent of the prototype dog, Canis Familiaris Leineri. The early Dane was also sometimes referred to as the “Tiger” dog, which again promoted controversy since some authorities claim the name was derived from the striped effect of brindling and others (particularly German breed historians) see the Harlequin factor as the reason for the ‘Tiger’ title.”

Because there was no ‘Colour Code’ in breeding in those days, there was a veritable ‘rainbow’ of colours to be found in these dogs. Fawn and blue, blue, brindle as well as the classical black and white harlequin pattern abounded. The recessive blue colour was wide spread. There were interesting colour patterns produced by a good deal of white which was present in fawn and brindle as well as harlequin and black. This common extension of white led to German breeders disallowing the breeding of harlequins, or dogs with a predominance of white to fawns or brindle so that the white was eventually bred out, with the exception of the occasional white mark on the chest or toes that we see today.

Germany is considered the most influential country behind the modern Great Dane, with England a close second. No one seems to know how this huge dog came to be called Great Dane as there’s no evidence he was ever popular in Denmark. In Germany he was known as Deutsche Dogge. The early German Danes were huge and coarse in appearance. More like the Mastiff than the present-day Great Danes.

The early Great Dane was a large and powerful hunting hound, used as an effective war dog, guard and hunter of wild boar. The forests of Germany abounded with hundreds of wild boar and large hunts were a common occurrence. Ears were cropped extremely short to prevent injury as the dog ran through heavy brush and damage from the razor sharp tusks of the boar. Today the tradition of ear cropping continues in America and other countries where it isn’t outlawed. The length has increased dramatically and gives a noble look to the head. However, it is not necessary to crop ears in order to show a Dane.

In 1857, the first record of a Great Dane having existed in the United States was when Mr. Francis Butler shipped his harlequin named Prince from New York to London. Prince was shown in England and a photo of him and his master appeared in the Illustrated News. Having seen this publication, Queen Victoria expressed interest in seeing the dog.

The first time Great Danes were shown in this country was in 1877 at the Philadelphia Grand National Show. They were then shown under the name of Siberian, or Ulm dogs. The Westminster Kennel Club offered a class for “Siberian” dogs in 1887.

The next notable show that included classes for Great Danes was held at the American Institute building in New York. Here the uncontrollable aggression of the breed was seen by all. Fights broke out both among the Danes and the other breeds in attendance.

Because of this they were barred from further showing in this country. Seven years later, in 1888, they were once again allowed into an American show ring.

The Danes of the past were fierce and aggressive and had a temperament very different from the ‘gentle giant’ we know today. The temperament of these early Danes, imported directly from Germany, was so aggressive as to be almost unmanageable. Their use as hunting dogs, war dogs and guard dogs, required this type of temperament. It is a great tribute to the early American breeders to note the tremendous improvement in temperament within about 20 years of the first imports. This was achieved without losing the desired guarding behaviour exhibited today by the modern Great Dane.

Today they are basically the most gentle of dogs. They should be devoted to their families, and willing to accept into their homes anyone welcomed by their owners. In most cases this is the reality. However, the genes that cause the aggression and shyness, do occasionally crop up. It is because of this that breeders

9 DOG WORLD July 2021

must consistently select their breeding stock for GOOD temperament. Keep this in mind when you begin your own search for a dog whether for a pet or a breeding/show dog.

CharacteristicsThe Great Dane is a very intelligent canine and displays a graceful, almost human sense and behaviour, but only if he is a typical representative of his breed that has been properly nurtured and reared. He is not a four-legged robot that can be trained by anybody with the use of force, but a quick and positive learner eager to please the teacher(s) he loves and respects: his beloved persons. The Apollo of dogs is a true four-legged aristocrat, full of heart and generosity, superior spirit and courage; a companion that is protective, gentle, always attentive to his peoples’ wishes and needs, proud and distinguished in appearance, beautiful like a classic statue, a dog that deserves to belong to people as good, civil and decent as himself.

Indeed, when you have a Great Dane, you don’t owe

your dog – your dog owns you: he or she will care, love and protect you in a parental fashion, and this adorable tendency the Danes demonstrates with all creatures sharing his/her household; children and pets, especially the smaller and most vulnerable, are in the centre of this benevolent being’s affections. This easy-going attitude enables us to live in a trouble-free co-existence with other peaceful breeds of dogs and companion animals under the Dane’s graceful manners and positive, loving yet unquestionable leadership. The Great Dane has a laid back outlook and an optimistic approach to life. He is a sunny-natured, happy dog that often demonstrates a wise, almost philosophical way of dealing with situations. If others want to pick a fight, the Dane will be unwilling, even forgiving and long-enduring, at first.

But as the Great Dane is both magnificent in stature and courage and incomparable in physical and mental strength, the breed’s natural dismissiveness, which comes from self-assurance, should not be mistaken for cowardice: the Great Dane is the embodiment

10 DOG WORLD July 2021

of quiet power and, regardless of their sex (females are even more naturally protective), know their own strength very well. Indeed, the well-reared Great Dane is a very effective watch dog and his deep, powerful bark is enough to deter any intruder. An angry Great Dane is not something anyone would ever wish to face…If, however, provoked or challenged, especially within their own household, in a situation that might threaten the peace and safety of their beloved ones, they will not hesitate to correct the aggressor in no uncertain terms. Thankfully, one such lesson from a Great Dane is usually enough. So it is useful to remember that it is not such a good idea to keep lesser, quarrelsome canines in the company of Great Danes. They are magnanimous to a fault, but do not tolerate viciousness in their realm...

The stature and looks of a Great Dane are impressive without doubt; combined with a uniquely charming personality and such a deep-understanding mind that caused the grandmother of animal trainers (Barbara Woodhouse) to call them “Almost Human” (in her

book so titled), this is a charismatic creature that has understandably become one of the most beloved four-legged companions in the world. But this is definitely not a breed for the superficial egotist who just wants a large dog to show off: because in the Great Dane’s magnificent body beats a sensitive heart, full of unlimited love and affection, to be unconditionally given only to the right recipients; the ones who truly deserve the privilege of living in the company of the brave and the beautiful, the truly kind and thoroughly good and gentle and nice, the one and only true “Apollo of Dogs”. So called not only for his external beauty and classic proportions, but mostly for his outstanding virtues and the radiant brilliance of his multi-talented nature.

Great Danes the world over excel as companions and assistants of mankind in a variety of tasks, from therapy to search and rescue. For so many of us, who are lucky to know them and be loved by them, the world is a far better place because of their kind presence among us...Let us all work tirelessly so

11 DOG WORLD July 2021

that their legacy of goodness is never betrayed, but continues to shine and warm our hearts and lives, for as long as our species exists, walking side by side with our true best friends...

Are Great Danes Right For You?There are many dog breeds from which to choose the right one for you. No breed is perfect for everyone and Great Danes are no exception. Just because you think that you want one is not reason enough to have one. In may cases, the beauty and size of this dog is its first attraction.

Sweet and wonderful as they are, Great Danes, as do all breeds, have their drawbacks. First on the list is the normally short life span. Six to seven years is probably on the high end of average, although there certainly are many exemptions.

Unfortunately it seems as though Great Danes have more than their share of health problems. Bloat or gastric torsion, is probably one of the most common causes although bloat does not usually occur in dogs under five years of age.

Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD) is a disease that affects puppies, usually from around four to ten months of age, during the fastest period of growth. Wobblers syndrome or spondylolisthesis is a disease of the nervous system which causes the dog to have problems walking. There are several degrees of severity to this problem. Some dogs can live long lives with it while other must be euthanized at a young age.

Heart problems are quite common in the breed. Most heart problems do not effect the dog until age three or four years or older. Some can be managed, some cannot.

Cancer is one of the most common causes of death in dogs and Great Danes are possibly more prone to it than most – especially bone cancer (osteosarcoma). Fibrosarcoma and lymphosarcoma are also causes of death in Great Danes.

A teething Great Dane puppy can do a lot of damage in a short time. You must be prepared to prevent such disasters and to laugh them off when they do happen. If you’re the kind of person who must have an orderly house and a perfect yard, don’t buy a Great Dane.

Why own a Great Dane? First and foremost the joy and love they give. They are such good friends, house dogs and be with those they love come what may. They are normally fearless guards and very clean in the house. Great Danes are very special dogs – there truly is nothing like a Dane!

13 DOG WORLD July 2021

– David Margan, Communications Consultant

In the last two years, largely driven by the COVID pandemic, lockdowns and working from home puppy sales have soared, as have some prices. People are looking for comfort and companionship in isolation.

Currently, according to official figures, there are 4.8 million dogs in Australia.

But puppy sales are a business that’s poorly regulated and it’s a matter of ‘buyer beware.’

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s ‘Scamwatch’ believes that puppy scams are now one of the top five national rorts and at least $2.1 million has been fleeced from people wanting to buy a puppy but in reality that figure would be much higher as it only reflects those who have lodged a complaint. Many people have just ‘sucked up’ losing $3000 to $5000 in these scams for the purchase of non-existent puppies.

According to Ulla Greenwood, President of Dogs Queensland, the state’s premier purebred dog body; “The Queensland Breeder Identification Number (BIN) system has been an abject failure. Any backyard operator can go online, fill out a simple form, get a Breeder Identification Number and then call themselves a ’licensed breeder’. There are no checks, no follow-ups, nor any requirement to comply with a ‘Breeder’s Code of Conduct’ as is the case with a Dogs Queensland breeder.”

But don’t be put off adding some canine joy to your home for there are simple ways to get a great result.

But first what’s popular and what’s not?

In the World of Dogs it’s still the old favourite purebred dogs that triumph and for good reason. There is a predictability about the breed characteristics that you don’t get with a crossbred.

The latest figures from the Australian National Kennel Council reveal what breeds are the most popular breeds with our breeders and their new families : Labrador

Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Border Collies, with the pure bred French Bulldog coming in fifth but showing one of the biggest growths in popularity in the community.

One third less Pugs are being bred compared to ten years ago and they have slipped to number 20 in the popularity stakes.

In Australia there are now 200 different pure breeds that are officially recognised with a world of choice.

One of the rarest is from the Italian city of Bologna. The aptly named, ‘Bolognese’ has only just recently arrived in Australia.

Another rare breed is the Mexican Xoloitzcuintle (Intermediate) with four being bred.

As in any marketplace demand and supply is a major influence on price, add rarity to the occasion and the five most expensive pure bred puppies in Australia at the moment are the Tibetan Mastiffs, French Bulldogs, Lowchens, Samoyeds and the British Bulldog. Prices for ‘pure bred’ dogs can range from $2000 – $11,000. It makes it all the more important to go to a well-regarded breeder with a depth of knowledge of the breed and bloodlines.

Many though are priced around $3000 – $3500, however the record for the most expensive dog in the world goes to one Tibetan Mastiff puppy sold in China for an eye-watering $2 million.

While some cross bred dogs can be just as expensive, because they are fashionable at the moment, buying one of them can often be like getting a pig in a poke.

They can have congenital health problems that will never go away and could end up costing you thousands in vet bills.

Dogs Queensland President, Ulla Greenwood; “Genuine pure bred dogs have hundreds of years of breeding with certainty about temperaments and breed characteristics so you know what you are getting. Professional breeders registered with Dogs Queensland and its umbrella organisation, the Australian National Kennel Council comply with a stringent Breeders’ Code of Conduct and generally provide lifetime advice and support.”

What are sometimes loosely described as ‘Australian cattle dogs’ have remained consistently popular over the last ten years as they are seen as archetypically ‘Australian’ and make good watchdogs and family members.

Litters of Australian Shepherds has risen threefold in

BUYINGA PUPPY

14 DOG WORLD July 2021

number over the past decade. This striking and active breed makes an excellent family companion.

When considering buying one, keep in mind these fabulous animals are high energy ‘working’ dogs and need plenty of exercise and love to be kept stimulated.

Of course once you’ve got a dog you have to look after it and some dogs can be more expensive than others. Obviously size and food bills are a factor, and coated dogs taken to the groomers can send the bills up, but the biggest unexpected cost can be poorly bred dogs with expensive health issues.

So what should you do to make the right choice and get a puppy that will be lifelong companion and member of your family? This is what Dogs Queensland recommends;

• Do your research to find out what breed best suits you and your circumstances. Feel free to check out the Dogs Queensland website and contact the office for breeder advice.

• Never buy a puppy sight unseen and never buy from a ‘breeder’ you don’t meet.

• Make sure you visit the breeder and see the environment in which the puppy has been raised.

• Make sure you see its Mum and relations.

• A breeder who is keen to know who is buying the puppy and their circumstances is a sure sign their first concern is not profit, but the welfare of the puppy. Being on a waiting list can be a good sign.

• Make sure you are given the proper paperwork confirming vaccinations, microchipping, pedigree, transfer and information about caring for your puppy.

• Some but not all, things to consider; your style of accommodation, do you have kids, will the dog have regular company and exercise, how much time can you honestly give it?

Breeder Alert – Puppy Scam Websites

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is:• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in- person contact with you.• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.• Ask for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.

Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at [email protected].

Joanne Bibby – Fursafe®

This article provides an introduction into the identification and immediate action required when a dog experiences a burn trauma. Given the many ways a dog can be burnt and the size of the subject matter, the article cannot cover all variables. Please call your Vet if ever your dog is burnt, impacted by toxic fumes, has ingested toxic liquids, experienced electric shock or has experienced a vehicle accident.

BURN TRAUMABurn trauma is when the tissue on a dog’s body is damaged from coming into contact or exposed to:

• Thermal Burns: When the dog comes into contact with heated objects or liquids e.g., boiling water, hot steam, flame, heated appliances including BBQ hotplates and walking on hot roads.

• Chemical Burns: If a dog ingests, absorbs or inhales caustic chemicals there is the risk of burns in the mouth/throat, skin, nasal passages and lungs.

• Electrical Burns: Electric shock where electricity passes through the body of the dog causing potential cardiac arrest and damage to other organs.

Other Burns:• Friction Burn: If a dog falls out of a moving car the dog may experience a serious burn from being dragged or skidding on the pavement or roadway. Another way to experience a friction burn is constant rubbing of rope.

• Cold Burn: Frostbite is a cold burn from ice exposure. The skin blackens and dies usually on the extremities such as ears, toes, paws, tail for example. Frostbite has the potential to cause the loss of the affected extremity.

• Radiation Burns: Overexposure to the sun. Laying too close to radiators.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONSThe best way to mitigate the risk of your dog experiencing a burn is to:

• Keep your dog out of the kitchen if you are unable to stop them from getting under feet or too close to the appliances.

• Keep all wiring and electrical appliances in good working order and out of reach.

• Don’t leave a hot BBQ unattended.

• Ensure that all household and garden chemicals

First Aid:

Burns

are stored in cabinets. Never leave toilet bleach on the floor and always keep laundry chemicals up high or in the cupboard.

• Don’t allow your dog to remain in full sun; always provide shade. With white dogs use sunscreen.

• Don’t leave radiators or open fires unattended – if possible, cordon off.

• Always anchor your dog when in the car. Don’t allow your dog to put head/shoulders out the window when driving.

• During bushfire season, implement your Bushfire Survival Plan. Place your dog into a closed area while organising evacuation.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMSSeverity of BurnsMinor – 1st degree burn • Fur looks and smells singed. • Painful fluid lesions/blisters may be visible.• Skin around burn area may appear red in colour.

Moderate – 2nd degree burn / partial thickness burn • Painful swollen lesions/blisters darkening in colour.

Severe – 3rd degree burn / full thickness burn • Burnt through the dermis, affecting deeper tissues.• Lesions may look black or white. Fur pulls or falls out easily.• Shock.• Gums turning pale or white. Heart rate beating rapidly. Breathing is rapid.• Risk of infection.

Life-threatening – 4th degree burn/full thickness• Trauma to tendons, muscles, bones and other organs.• Severe bleeding and infection.• Shock.

THERMAL BURNS

Liquid Burns and Contact Burns (e.g., BBQ hot plate)

1. Restrain dog.

2. Cool burned area immediately with a gentle stream of cold water e.g., backyard hose, bath, shower attachment or under a tap for 15-20 minutes. The quicker you cool the area, the less damage will be done.

3. Cover the area with a sterile non-stick bandage.

4. Take your dog’s temperature to ensure you are not over cooling and causing hypothermia.

5. Make sure you wrap dog in a blanket for the trip to the Vet and manage for shock.

CHEMICAL BURNS1. Wear rubber gloves to avoid being burnt yourself.

2. Remove any contaminated collars, clothing or harness.

3. Flush affected area with cold water for 15-20 minutes, making sure you don’t spread the chemicals and burn other areas.

4. Take your dog’s temperature to ensure you are not over cooling and causing hypothermia.

5. Make sure you wrap dog in a blanket for the trip to the Vet and manage for shock.

If the burn is in the mouth lie the dog on the side and pour cool water through the mouth, a cup at a time or use a garden hose for a constant cool flow. Make sure the water is running out of the mouth and NOT down the throat. Once flushed with water, cover superficial burns with a sterile non-stick bandage and get to the vet.

ELECTRICAL BURNSWarning: Never touch a pet that has been electrocutedwithout first:

1. Turning off the power at the mains;

2. Unplugging electrical equipment; and

3. Using a broom or some other wooden hook to pull/ drag pet away from electrical source and away from pools of water or other liquid (e.g., urine)

Electricity Can Kill!

4. Restrain dog and cool burnt area immediately by placing injured part or area under gentle stream of cold water for 15-20 minutes. The quicker you cool the area, the less damage will be done.

5. Take your dog’s temperature to ensure you are not over cooling and causing hypothermia.

6. Cover the area with a sterile non-adhesive bandage.

7. Undertake a Secondary assessment to see if there are other wounds.

8. Treat for shock.

9. Wrap dog in blanket for the trip to vet.

19 DOG WORLD July 2021

FIRE/FLAME BURNS

1. Restrain dog and cool burnt area immediately by placing injured part or area under gentle stream of cold water for 15-20 minutes. The quicker you cool the area, the less damage will be done. Cover the area with a sterile non-stick bandage.

2. Wrap dog in blanket for the trip to the Vet.

3. Undertake a Secondary assessment to see if there are other wounds.

4. Treat for shock.

ALL BURNS

5. Continuously monitor breathing while treating, and on the way to the vet.

6. Get to a Vet immediately. If you have a driver and:

• Your dog stops breathing, begin artificial respiration on the way to the Vet surgery

• Your dog’s heart stops beating, begin CPR on the way to the Vet surgery

‘The Gathering ’ – A Celebration Of Arts And Culture

On Sunday 23rd May 2021, the Irish Wolfhound Club of Qld were invited to ‘The Gathering’ at the Ipswich Turf Club.

The annual event, which began 30 years ago, celebrates all things Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Spanish and Celtic. Attended by thousands, the day included performances by the City of Ipswich Pipe Band, sword fight re-enactments, Celtic food and even Haggis – if you dared!

This was the clubs first year of attendance and they’re hoping to make it an annual event. 13 Irish Wolfhounds were in attendance – all of them great

ambassadors for the breed. ‘The Gathering’ was a wonderful opportunity to promote our dogs to the wider community and answer any questions.

The club has plans to attend the All Dogs Sports Spectacular at Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds on 22 August 2021 as well as their Specialty Show at Durack on Saturday 7 August 2021 at midday.

With such a technology and online–focused world, passwords have become an annoying necessity in life. We are always forgetting them, we are being constantly asked to change them, and worse; we are now being asked to make them more complicated by adding special symbols!

It’s all too hard, so to make things simple for ourselves, what do we do? Our loved ones, birthdays and yes, of course, our pets’ names are top choices for password inspo.

It’s only natural we use names that are special to us to help remember our never-ending list of passwords. In fact, a recent survey by The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) found that 15% of people used pets’ names, 14% use a family member’s name, and 13% pick a notable date.

In other words, millions of people are using their pet’s names as their online passwords, and most likely, unknowingly making themselves easy targets for hackers and other online security issues.

Does changing a password make you feel like you have to pick between your pets as you ask yourself, “who is my favourite”?

If you’re struggling to decide which pet to use for your

next password, or have already used a pet’s name as a password, now is the time to make a change. NCSC communications director Nicola Hudson warned:

How does your pet’s name password make you.vulnerable to cybercriminals?

Hackers or cyber-criminals regularly use programs or ‘bots’ to test thousands of password combinations in a method often termed ‘trial-and-error’.

IS YOUR PET’S NAME

making you vulnerablemaking you vulnerableto cyber criminals?to cyber criminals?

Pixa

Pexe

ls

22 DOG WORLD July 2021

“Millions of accounts could be easily breached by criminals using trial-and-error techniques,” the NCSC warned. “That is because a pet’s name could be cracked just by repeatedly plugging in common pet’s names like Bella, Coco, Luna or Milo.”

What action can you take?Put simply, the best action you can take is to make sure you don’t use your pet’s name in any of your online passwords. To make sure you have a strong password that’s less likely to get hacked, the NCSC advised people follow these tips:

• Pick three words that are unrelated to create a new password. The NCSC give the example “RedPantsTree“ as three unrelated words. Make sure these are random words that cannot be guessed.

• Add exclamation points or other symbols to your password.

• Use numbers and letters, but make sure you do not birthdates.

• Use a completely different password for your email account.

How can one person remember all these passwords? The easiest way to keep track of all your passwords is to use your web browser’s password manager.

“With a password manager, you don’t have any excuse for bad passwords. A password manager lets you set up a vault with a master password, then add login items for pretty much anything. Enter your usernames, passwords, and other login information for a variety of sites and accounts, software you own, or even credit and debit card information.” (Hey you! Yes, you. Stop using your dog’s name as a password!, 2021).

If you’re looking for something slightly more secure, you could try using a password manager software:

• Keeper• 1Password• Bitwarden• Dashlane

At the end of the day, we all love our pets so much that it’s only natural to use their names in a password. If that’s something you’ve done without understanding the risks, you now have some good tips to keep you and your information safe online. So please, whatever you do, do not pick a password that’s from our popular dog names!

– Matthew Sticher, Managing Director

COVID-19 changed the way our typical day works and it changes all the time.

Usually a typical day consists of checking emails very early in the morning to look to see what flights have been cancelled and then letting customers know as a matter of urgency. Unfortunately, sometimes a customer is already on their way to lodge when it happens which does make it very stressful. Re-booking involves seeing what’s available that suits both the customer and in the cases of dogs going to new owners, the new owners as well.

Pre COVID, we had a really flexible system in terms of bookings. There were a lot of flights and we were able to book at short notice and also quite far into the future. These days, it’s not like that at all.

Once the office is open, the day is spent with the team taking calls for quotes, bookings or just general enquiries. At the same time, they’re regularly checking emails and responding to the same. It’s a really busy day!

In amongst all of this, we are also out running pet taxis, collecting or lodging animals at the airport which luckily for us is very close to our office. This

particularly makes it easier when a flight is suddenly delayed and we need to re-collect the animal and bring it back to our office where we have dedicated areas for them to be in so that they can play, toilet and just generally relax before their new flight. This is also what happens with dogs requiring comfort stops between flights and dogs that require overnight boarding.

Every crate requires full cleaning and sanitising before it is used again so this is part of our daily rituals as well. Hire crates required to be at the airport for those who are self lodging, are labelled with all of the information of the booking in order to minimise mix ups with the freight staff. Some of the crates will fly without any animals as they’re required to be at another airport, so they’re sent out in advance.

The animals are required to travel in a clean crate, so if a lodged animal soils it’s crate, one of our team has to stop what they’re doing and shoot over to the airport and make sure the animal is back in a clean crate before flying. Thankfully most don’t soil their crates before flying, but it can happen when animals have connecting flights too that are quite long (especially young puppies and kittens). Soiling the crate is the main reason we ask that you do not feed

A Day In The Life Of.....Bay City Pet Travel

24 DOG WORLD July 2021

the animal prior to flying and that they’ve been to the toilet before lodging. Plus travelling on a full belly can make some animals sick.

We send the majority of the booking confirmations at the end of the day as it’s more efficient to do them in batches.

After the office closes, there is often still work to do where animals need collecting or lodging (as many fly out of business hours) so it really is non-stop every day!

When all is done and dusted, it’s time to wind down to be ready to go again the next morning.

Dog Sports – LURE COURSINGThis month we showcase the Queenslandd Sighthound Association Inc and the

American Staffordshire Terrier Club Of Qld Inc Annual Winter Coursing Carnival at Lowood Showgrounds on the first weekend of June 2021.

– Nic Mather

Lure Coursing is a performance event developed in the early 70’s by Lyle Gillette and other California sighthound fanciers who hunted jackrabbits in the open field, which risked harm caused by barbed wire fencing. They invented Lure Coursing as a safer, more controlled sport for sighthounds that would recreate the physical requirements of open field coursing, allowing them to continue testing the functional abilities of their sighthounds. The hounds chase plastic bags on a course laid out to simulate escaping game. Lure coursing is a sport for dogs that involves chasing a mechanically operated lure.

In Australia, all dogs are eligible to compete in Lure Coursing as long as the dog is registered with the ANKC and the owner is a member of the member body in their state.

Dogs are separated into two main categories: Pedigree Registered Sighthounds and All Other Breeds. For the purpose of Lure Coursing in Australia, the Basenji and Rhodesian Ridgeback are considered Sighthounds.

The lure used in Australia is white plastic bags, tied to a cord which travels as a continuous loop around a field via pulleys and driven by a motor. The purpose of the lure and course, is to imitate a rabbit/hare running in a field.

Lure Coursing is a wonderful sport for fit and healthy dogs who love to run. It is not a sport suited to all breeds of dogs (ie: some brachycephalic and giant breeds may not be a good fit for the sport).

Lure Coursing is a sport based purely on instinct and your dog’s ability to hunt using their sight.

As a handler, your duty is to make sure you’re strong enough to walk your dog out on a lead and that you’ve trained the dog to have good enough recall to come back at the end.

The renovation of the field at Durack and COVID hit Lure Coursing with a massive blow in 2020, however the sport is bouncing back with the Queensland Sighthound Association Inc holding three trials in

October 2020 (the first of which was their 50th ANKC Lure Coursing Trial and the first in Australia to be officially held under lights!). Several training days were also held by the Brisbane Lure Coursing Club Inc in the second half of 2020.

Unfortunately, a few days after celebrating their 50th ANKC Lure Coursing Trial, the sport lost a legend when “Badger” (Neut Ch. vFCh. Wildhare Simply Scherzando SC [IMP USA]) gained his wings. Badger had extensive experience Lure Coursing whilst in the USA and was able to be used at the “experienced dog” required in a Qualifying Course to allow Sighthounds to run in the Open Stream. Sometimes Badger could run up to six times at a trial, but that didn’t phase him. It just simply made his smile even bigger.

A photo of Badger Lure Coursing, was actually the front cover of the very first edition of the Dog World as we know it today (see below).

26 DOG WORLD July 2021

“Badger’s Bunny Buddy” was created in memory of Badger and his gigantic Lure Coursing smile with the winner of 2020 being “Spud” (Greyhound [Unnamed Qiady]) who competed in his very first ANKC Lure Coursing Trial at the 50th trial for the Queensland Sighthound Association Inc.

The Queensland Sighthound Association Inc and the American Staffordshire Terrier Club of Queensland Inc held their annual Winter Coursing Carnival at Lowood Showgrounds on the first weekend of June. The overall winners for the weekend were “Pretzel” (Alarves Gotcha For Life) – Top Sighthound (via countback to “Spud” [Unnamed Qiady]) and “Enzo” (Rizenstar Never Let Me Go JC (AI) – Top Coursing Ability (by one point to “Dollar” [Ch. Ravensnite Betya Bottom Dollar CA]). Both clubs were extremely thankful to Lowood Show Society for allowing them to use their grounds for the weekend and Bay City Pet Travel for their extremely generous sponsorship of the event.

There are currently four clubs holding ANKC Lure Coursing Trials in South East Queensland:

• Queensland Sighthound Association Inc

• American Staffordshire Terrier Club of Queensland Inc

• Brisbane Lure Coursing Club Inc

• Whippet Club of Queensland

27 DOG WORLD July 2021

Written by Dr Gretta Howard in partnership with Black Hawk Pet Care

Licking is a common dog behaviour and while in some situations it is a normal interaction, some types of licking is undesirable or may even be a sign of disease.

Dogs licking people: Is this safe?Dogs often greet people with a lick if they are friendly but it is not necessarily a safe habit to encourage, given the potential for germs or even parasites which can be transferred to humans. It’s important to ensure your dog is always up-to-date with parasite preventatives, and that basic hygiene is carried out in the home when living with a dog, such as ensuring hands are washed prior to eating.

It is not recommended to allow a dog to lick your face.

It is best to discourage your dog from licking your children’s hands and faces.

Dogs licking themselves: Is this normal? When dogs excessively lick themselves, it is can be a sign that they are feeling itchy. Sometimes the focus is

just the paws, and their saliva can stain them brown, whereas sometimes the base of the tail can be the focus of attention. Allergic skin disease is common in dogs and the most common causes are atopic dermatitis, flea-allergy dermatitis and less often, food allergy.

Atopic dermatitis is by far the most common cause of allergic skin disease, but the other causes have to be ruled out first. While humans tend to get hayfever signs from inhaled allergens, dogs get itchy, resulting in excessive licking and secondary infections (yeast, bacterial or both).

Flea-allergy dermatitis tends to cause licking and biting at the base of the tail.

Sometimes there are no fleas seen as they’ve jumped off, or your dog has already removed them, but in allergic dogs, a single flea bite every 2 weeks can keep them licking until they are treated.

Food allergy can cause allergic skin disease but is a much less common cause than thought, making up less than 5% of itchy dogs1. Licking excessively can be a sign of food allergy.

If your dog is licking him or herself excessively, then consult with your veterinarian to determine the best way forward.

WHY WHY DO DO DOGS DOGS LICK?LICK?

28 DOG WORLD July 2021

Dog is licking surfaces: Why?While a small amount of surface licking is common, dogs that have a compulsion to lick various surfaces excessively may have an underlying disorder contributing to their clinical signs. These dogs should be assessed by a veterinarian and may need some for diagnostic investigation. This may involve blood tests, imaging or endoscopy if a gastrointestinal disorder is suspected, or referral to a veterinary behaviourist if an anxiety disorder, such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), is suspected to be the cause2.

Excessive Licking of Surfaces (ELS) is certainly not normal behaviour and should be investigated by your veterinarian.

Dog is licking the air: Why?What’s often known as ’lip smacking’ can be seen when a dog is anxious, especially in situations where your dog feels a bit uncertain. This is known as a displacement behaviour and is normal (yawning is another example of this). However, if your dog is seen to be licking the air rather than his or her chops, then this is not normal and needs to be assessed by your vet. The cause can be anything from allergies (an itchy tongue) to gastrointestinal disease (such as reflux), neurological disease (such as a focal seizure), or even obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)3.

Sometimes air licking can progress to air snapping, as though the dog is trying to catch something in the air with his or her mouth. This is known as ‘fly catching’ behaviour and is also abnormal.

Dogs like to use their tongues to interact with humans as well as their environment but it important that hand hygiene is practised to avoid disease transmission between dogs and humans. Dogs showing abnormal licking behaviours as such excessive surface licking or air licking should be examined by your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause.

34 DOG WORLD July 2021

– Ann Shannon

The back door slammed shut and once again I was on my own in the cold back yard with just a few ragged toys around. I was only five months old and wanted so badly to ‘belong’. The girl had bought me online – cute and fluffy at 8 weeks old and I was so pretty; a red and white Border Collie with a full white face and red dots on my ears – no wonder she fell in love with me on the internet.

After a while I was a nuisance, a biter and a runner but what did she expect when she shut me outside every morning while she went to work and then put me in a metal crate at night. She was past doing anything with me, resorting instead to yelling at me and hitting me and I did not like her!

One Saturday morning the front gate opened and in came a woman with a kind face – she must be visiting I thought, but she made a beeline for me and began to pat and talk to me. I tried

to be good but I jumped all over her and then she threw some nice chicken treats on the ground and I jumped on them and it was great to be doing something. She had me running here and there following the treats and then turning in circles – things I did not even know I could do.

It was not long before she put me in the back of her car and I said goodbye to that girl forever. I found out later that the kind lady had seen me for sale on the internet again and had come to rescue me.

We went to her home across from a lake and with a dog park just two doors up – I was in heaven, I could run and play and meet other dogs. I knew she was besotted with me but she did not seem to like me much – maybe because I was biting her, running away, barking my head off and pooping everywhere! I heard her tell someone that I was one day off being put down after I had bitten her hard and made her scream. I don’t know what that meant but I knew it was bad…

She also said that I was the first non-pedigreed, non-registered dog that she had ever had and she had to register me on the AR list (whatever that is?) My original name was Indy but she knew that I hated it as the girl used to hit me when she said it and I flinched when she called me. The kind lady changed it to Indianajones and I felt important and fancy with that name. She spent the next 12 months on behaviour with me and taught me many things – most of all not to do the things I had been doing and to enjoy being trained and then competing, which I love.

I am five years old now, and have titles after my name (whatever that means?) FS.S – Freestyle Starters – this is me and Mum passing at the Ekka (pictured above) – I am Indianajones, she is dressed as Indiana Jones and the music is “Raiders of the Lost Ark” from the first Indiana Jones movie. I also have TK.S and TK.N Tricks Titles and I just love showing off now.

I am so glad that I got a second chance and ended up with a kind knowledgeable trainer. Look at me smiling now !
