CHM 135H is designed to provide afoundationinphysicalchemistryforstudentswhointendtofollowascienceprogram,primarilyintheLifeorHealthSciences.AlongwithCHM136H(IntroductoryOrganicChemistryI),thesearealsotherecommendedcoursesforthoseapplyingforentryintoprofessionalprograms.CHM135HandCHM136HarealsoacceptableforadmissiontoanyoftheundergraduateprogramsofferedbytheDepartmentofChemistry.High-schoollevelChemistrySCH4UandMathematicsMHF4U+MCV4Uortheirequivalentsarepre-requisitesforCHM135H,andthiscourseisapre-requisiteforCHM136H.

III HOWTHECOURSEISORGANIZED DuringFall2021,CHM135Hwillbeofferedfullyonline,sothereisnoin-personscheduledclassroomtime.Eachweek,youwillattendlive(synchronous)classesandtutorialsessions.Inlieuof in-person laboratories this year, you will also complete five virtual experiments and meetsynchronouslyfivetimestodiscussthoseexperimentsoverthecourseofthesemester.Therewillbeonlinestudenthoursforboththe“class”and“practical”contenttosupportyourlearning. The objectives of the CHM 135H tutorial are (i) to re-visit the course content seen insynchronousclasses;(ii)tosolveproblemsinsmallergroupsandwithyourteachingassistant;and(iii) to give you an opportunity towork in a smaller group environment. These smaller tutorialsessionswillalsoprovideachancetomeetyourpeersandbuildacommunitywithinthelargecourse.InyourCHM135HTUTcoursetileinQuercus,youwillfindthefollowinginformation:1)Weeklytextbookproblemsandsolutions2)Adiscussionboardtomeetyourpeers3)LinkstosynchronoustutorialsessionsviaZoom4)LinkstoTeamUp!groupquizzes(startingTutorial2) TheTeamUp!groupquizzeswillbecompletedduringtutorialandonlyyourbest8of10TeamUp!scoreswillcounttowardsyourfinalgrade.Therewillbenomake-upTeamUp!quizzes.Droppingthelowesttwoscoreswillaccountforanynecessaryabsences. Active student participation in problem solving through completion of homework islinked to success in learning chemistry: the assigned textbook problems, will provide you animportant opportunity for self-assessment, and help youmake sure you are keeping upwith thecoursematerialsandareessentialpreparationfortutorial.Duringyourtutorialsessions,yourtutorialteaching assistant (TA) will discuss any questions that you may have concerning the assignedexercisesandassistyouinunderstandingtheimportantconceptsofthecoursematerial.

Chemistryisanareaofstudythatreliesonproblem-solving.Inordertolearnchemistryandbesuccessfulonthecourseassessments,youneedtopractice.Rememberthatyouarethebestjudgeofyourownlearning(providedthatyouarehonestwithyourself!)PRACTICALS InCHM135H,youwill carryout, record, and interpret the resultsof fivevirtual chemistryexperiments.EachexperimentwillconsistofamoduleontheCHM135HPRAcoursetileonQuercus.Youwillreadthroughtheexperimentandcompleteapre-labquizbeforemeetingwithyourpracticalgroupandteachingassistanttodiscusstheexperiment.Aftercompletingtheexperimentaltasks,youwillanswerreportsheetquestionsonQuercusforyourlabreport.MoredetailsareavailableontheCHM135HPRAcoursetileonQuercus.HelpwillbeavailableduringthepracticalstudenthourswhichareofferedviaZoomwiththelinksavailableonthePRAcoursetileonQuercus.

PRAsectioncodesendinginanoddnumberwillbegintheweekofSeptember20,2021andwill run on alternating weeks. PRA sections ending in an even number will begin the week ofSeptember27,2021andrunonalternatingweeksaswell.
