EDUCATION ATGugulesizwe HighSchool has been at astandstill sinceTuesday, April 9, withparents calling for offi-cials from theDepartment ofEducation to addressthem. School bagswere hung on theclosed school gate onTuesday, while learn-ers and educators stoodoutside.Troubles at this schoolcontinue unabated withparents blaming theDepartment ofEducation for failing toresolve the issues. The school has beenwithout a permanent principal sinceJanuary 2018, when Mr Anton Mguniwas suspended, pending a disciplinaryinvestigation. Mr Mguni is currentlyalso facing two criminal charges, onefor theft and one for trespassing. Histrial is being conducted in theScottburgh Magistrates Court. Parentshave gathered at the school for threedays, in an attempt to get the educationofficials to come and address them. Alist of grievances prepared by the SGBincludes the following:*No permanent principal for more than12 months.*No deputy principal.*No Head of Department (HOD) forcommerce.Parents said that the school has dailyproblems because of the poor manage-ment of the school without a principal. The SBG and parents are calling for theimmediate reinstatement of the sus-pended principal, Mr Mnguni.

A member of the SGB said that the sit-uation should not have been allowed todeteriorate to such an extent. Meetingsat the district and provincial officeshave so far proven fruitless.A parent who did not want to be namedsaid that the situation has impactednegatively on the learners who show alack of discipline and show no respectto the teachers, without any fear ofreprisal. Some play truant and othersmisbehave. She said that order neededto be restored at the school and thiscould only be achieved once the schoolhad a permanent principal. The SGB said that an official from theUgu District, Mr Gumede, was meantto come to the school to address thembut instead requested to meet SGBmembers at the police station. An e-mail sent to the Ugu District Director,Mr Sibiya, as well as to the MEC’soffice has received no response. Thepoor disciplinary situation at the schooland the increase in drug abuse and

other criminal activities have evenattracted the attention of the highestranking police officials in the province, who have tasked the Scottburgh SAPSwith increasing its surveillance of thesituation at the school.KZN Department of Education

spokesperson, Mr Muzi Mahlambi, saidthat things have been running smoothlyat the school for many months. It isonly now that the parents have decidedto disrupt learning. Government, through the Department of Education, has provided the infrastructure, theeducators and learning materials, hencethe learning should continue at theschool. The matter of the principal not beingpresent at the school should not inteferewith the learning programme as there isan acting principal at the school. Theissue of the principal is being dealt withand such investigations take time. Dueprocesses need to be followed," said MrMahlambi.

2019/20 IDP REVIEW ANDDRAFT BUDGET

The council and manage-ment spent a further 2days at the luxury

Karridene hotel to concludethe strategic planning exercisethat should have resulted in areview of the IDP and a draftbudget for public considera-tion. The exercise did notdeliver the expected outcomeand the reviewed draft IDP andbudget that have been adver-tised for public comment, aredisappointing in manyrespects. The documents weredealt with in detail at the publicmeeting on 10.04.2019.

R102/R612 CLEAN-UPS

In response to public expres-sion at the public meeting onApril 3, the ward committeeresolved to embark on a pro-ject to cut the R102 vergesbefore the Easter long week-end. Contribution to the projecthas been limited but the pro-ject will proceed. My liaisonwith the Department ofTransport to seek its co-opera-tion has resulted in theappointment of a contractorand work will commence thisweek. The project by the wardcommittee will therefore focuson all the intersections with themain road i.e. at PenningtonDrive, Dolphin/Baracuda,Kelso, Rocky Bay, SouthStreet and the R102/R612Intersection. The work at theR102/612 has made progresswith 2 gardens already estab-lished and the verges havebeen cut. There is more to bedone with regards signage, drain clearing, parking, land-scaping and shelters. Once theintersections have been com-pleted, the intention is to moveinto the ward to cut back theencroachments on the roads.Contributions are welcomedand are managed by theratepayer’s association onbehalf of the committee.

CAPITAL PROJECTS 2018/19

The road names in Penningtonhave been completed andPark Rynie will be done afterJune this year. Please reportany incorrectly spelt names tome for correction. This projectwas a waste of resourcesgiven the fact that the PCWhad already done a good jobwith the existing nameblocks. It is a sad reflection on the atti-tude of officials who, havingignored the request for roadname signs since 2016, felt itnecessary to install them whenthey were not needed. Thereconstruction of Salmon Drivehas almost been completed, but there have been seriouslapses by the contractor. Theproject has illustrated seriousincapacity in the municipality’sproject management unit andTechnical ServicesDepartment. Porpoise Roadwill be tackled next. The pumpstation project is progressingwell, despite the difficulties

arising from the heavy rainfall.Current progress on the rein-forcing and concrete castinggives much hope that an endis finally in sight. The wardcommittee has motivated touse the Whale Road funding toundertake maintenance on themore critical roads inPennington. The parking atMpithi Beach will be repavedby the end of the month andlighting will be installed.

ROADS AND STORMWATERMAINTENANCE

This remains the biggest prob-lem and receives the leastattention by Umdoni. It mustbe the priority for the new bud-get. Pennington Drive andMinerva Road potholes havebeen repaired with the fundsthat I requested to be divertedfrom the construction of speed-humps. The ward committee iscompiling a priority list of roadsfor rehabilitation using theWhale Road funds and in thenew budget. The municipalstaff is currently engaged inpothole repairs in Park RynieSouth, but progress is verylimited. Stormwater channels, culverts, pipes and drains, areall in need of repair and clear-ing. This work has alreadybeen motivated through thepast efforts of the committee.

STREETLIGHTS

Since the repairs that tookplace at the end of last year,no further work has or will bedone because the current bud-get makes no provision forsuch repairs. The implication isthat streetlight repairs will onlystart from July this year.

VERGES

It is evident that the changefrom using outside serviceproviders, to providing the ser-vice in-house using municipalstaff, has been a failure. Thiswas predicted because theplanning and budgeting wasdone so poorly. The municipal-ity now employs an army ofstaff with little supervision, lim-ited training and insufficientequipment to do the job. Theward committee will use what-ever resources are contributedto assist in keeping the wardtidy. The service we are expe-riencing is sporadic cuttingwith little cleaning up and nocutting back.

BEACHES

The beaches are relativelyclean, but the service crewsspend much of their time lyingaround neglecting their jobs. The large deck and stairssouth of the pool atPennington Beach has beenremoved. The pools will bedesilted for the Easter longweek-end. The protection ofmarine species requires a con-certed community effort tocombat the current abuse aris-ing from the lack of policingsince the Ezemvelo Wildlife

Service was discontinued.

TELECOMMS

The recent theft of TELKOMcables has created a commu-nication challenge for manyresidents. I have madeenquiries and it is apparentthat Telkom is not committed toreplacing the cables. Thisimplies that residents will haveto adopt wireless/mobile solu-tions. At the same time thereare numerous applicationsbeing made for cell ‘phonetowers. The reality is that wewill eventually have to changeto cell ’phone technology andfibre cables, as has happenedelsewhere in the world. At pre-sent we do not have a fullyequipped fibre network. It is anissue which the ward commit-tee should pursue, and it willbe placed on the agenda.

EPWP

This is an acronym for theExpanded Public WorksProgramme. It is a povertyalleviation programme thatfunctions in the municipality. The employees in the pro-gramme can be recognised bytheir orange uniforms. InUmdoni we have several hun-dred working for the municipal-ity, and many others workingfor the Department of PublicWorks and EnvironmentalAffairs, within the municipality.I receive many complaintsregarding their lack of produc-tivity. This problem is the directresult of poor managementand supervision. The pro-gramme can do a great deal touplift communities if the work-ers are managed effectively. Tothis end I will encourage thecommittee members and otherwilling residents to forge arelationship with the workersand to use the opportunity tobuild some co-operation andtrust. In 2017 I had a team thatwas dedicated to Ward 10. Wewere able to tidy up the wardto the point where some folkcommented that they had notseen the ward looking so goodfor a long time. I will engagewith Umdoni to achieve a simi-lar arrangement whereby theward committee will takeresponsibility to manage a“Housekeeping Team”.In closing it must be said thatthe Umdoni Municipality andvarious government depart-ments are not doing the workthat they should do, and forwhich they are paid. Despitethis it remains our responsibili-ty to maintain our neighbour-hoods and to afford one anoth-er some protection againstcriminal activity. We may suc-ceed in changing the attitudesof officials by demonstratingour common desire to riseabove the neglect, and to pre-serve and protect the spacesin which we have invested.

Councillor E V BaptieWard 10 – Umdoni

Councillor’s monthly report to the wardcommittee / community

When I arrived back from sailing 2years ago, I started writing to theRising Sun. One of my First letters

was about telling the government to get rid ofthe Guptas by giving them 48 hours to leavethe country and getting overseas lawyers tosue them for the damage they did to SouthAfrica with the help of Zuma and his cronies. The Guptas left of their own accord becauseof mounting pressure, and with Zuma gone, they had no choice.

I told the government to sell SA Airways, which it didn’t do, costing the citizens of SA20 billion rand and counting.

I told the government to start building apipeline to pump water from the LimpopoRiver to the Vaal Dam and in the same articletold them to build wind generators and solarpanels. I saw an article where it showed 20square miles of solar panels erected in one ofthe deserts in the USA. The Americans didn’thave to do that as they are oil exporters. The ANC has done nothing but loot the coun-try of billions of rand in every department gov-erned by it. The ANC mindset and my mind-set are worlds apart. Greed and looting thestate’s coffers are uppermost on the ANC’smind. My idea is to improve the situation inSouth Africa without expecting any payment.I’ve changed my mind about Ramaphosa. Iused to think he was our saving grace, butnot any more. Just like Zuma and his son, heis going in the same direction with accusa-

tions involving funds donated by donors andother amounts involving his son.

According to Mr Maimane of the DA, theRamaphosa party isguilty of retaining crimi-nals in the party and in government, whoshould be behind bars instead of receivingenormous salaries in parliament. So the storygoes on with blackouts and water shortages.Get the money back from the offenders andwe can build dams, pipelines, wind genera-tors, solar panels, etc.

Recently I saw in the Rising Sun an articleabout the meeting between Mr Maimane ofthe DA and residents of Umzinto in the townhall. I would love to have gone but I didn’tknow about the meeting. I had a couple ofcrucial questions to ask him and now it’s toolate. One of my questions would have beenthis:

Why are the councillors paid such enormoussalaries when they don’t perform to the stan-dards expected of them? I’m going to pro-pose that the salaries that they get are notproportionate to the work they do. In someinstances they do nothing but wait for paydayat the end of the month. That to me is unac-ceptable. The type of councillors that Umdonihas are not worthy to hold those positions. What qualifications do they hold? Are theytrustworthy? One can go on and on.

The Democratic Alliance in the UguDistrict Municipality completely rejectsthe proposed 22% water tariff increase

and the withdrawal of the 6kl of free monthlywater allowance. According to the DA’s calcu-lations, this will have a massive impact onresidents throughout the district. On a monthlyaverage bill of R300 and R500, there will be a54% and 41% increase respectively. This willput a huge strain on already struggling resi-dents, pensioners and the poor.

This increase comes on the back of yearsof poor water service delivery with prolongedbreaks in the water supply, a lack of mainte-nance and a poor relief water supply. This hasbeen a constant burden to residents eversince the salt water crisis of December 2015.There has been no relief from the constantmismanagement, rogue employee behaviourand the lack of consequence management.Additionally, the financial management of themunicipality is dysfunctional. There has beena billing crisis since October 2017. Severalfailed turnaround strategies have resulted in asteadily deteriorating situation.

In addition to the lack of billing, the UguDistrict Municipality cannot account for over35% of its water reticulation. The DemocraticAlliance continues to urge MEC NomusaDube-Ncube to place this dysfunctionalmunicipality under Section 139 administration.

The Democratic Alliance urges all the resi-dents of Ugu to stand united in rejecting theproposed 2019/20 water tariff increases. Lifehas become too expensive for ordinary SouthCoasters, and these exorbitant tariff increasesare simply unaffordable for the residents. TheDA calls on residents and ratepayers associa-tions to join a picket during the public partici-pation meeting at Uvongo Town Hall onTuesday, 16 April at 16:00.When tabling our rejection to the proposedtariff increases at May’s council meeting, weplan to table a petition to show that SouthCoasters agree with our position. To add yoursignature, contact your local DA councillor.

Umdoni Municipality has recentlyembarked on the constrction of speed-humps in Umzinto and Scottburgh.

Each speedhump costs approx. R60 000.This money could better be utilized to repairpotholes.Consideration should rather be given to theinstallation of rumble - strips in hazardousareas.

For example, speedhumps have beeninstalled on either side of the driveway of amunicipal official's house in Park Rynie, inconveniencing the public. The lack of lawenforcement for speeding motorists wouldappear to be the reason for the speedhumps.Umdoni's Law Enforcement officials should

rather concentrate on speed timing at strate-gic spots, rather than issuing fines for expiredlicence discs on parked motor vehicles andsitting in their vehicles and watching scholarpatrols help children to cross the road.Law Enforcement should also prosecute

motorists ( especially business staff), whoselfishly park in the one-hour parking bays inUmzinto CBD and the Scottburgh CBD, forthe whole day. Senior citizens and disabledpersons and the public at large are inconve-nienced in this regard. It is time Umdoni Protection Services wokeup!

SOCIALITES, SPONSORS, media representativesand role-players were overcome with glee and elationwhen they were exclusively invited to witness thefabulous and stunning on-screen nuptials of much-loved characters, Prishen and Jodi, at theKandasamys: The Wedding world premiere, at Ster-Kinekor Gateway, on Thursday night. That’s right: the lovebirds have officially tied theknot and you will also soon be able to bear testimonyto their love, commitment and emotional union at cin-emas in Durban when the sequel to Keeping Up WithThe Kandasamys officially releases during the Easterweekend. In a bid to add to the pre-wedding festivi-ties, the crème de la crème and who’s who of Durbanwere the first, apart from the cast and crew, to watchthe highly-anticipated movie on the big screen. In theIndian community, a wedding is often described as aprosperous, vibrant, lavish and extensive ritual thatone undertakes in his or her life. This was no different as guests arrived in style andsplendour at the venue, which was perfectly trans-formed into a magical, fairy-tale wedding scene. Ascustomary at Indian functions, guests were offeredsweetmeats as they entered the venue to sweeten notonly their mouths, but also the mood and theirthoughts. As one walked through the venue, it was clear thatall stops were pulled out to ensure that this wasindeed the wedding of the year. While guests mingled, dined on mouth-watering savouries and sweets andenjoyed the special celebrations, the beloved cast of

the movie, prepared towalk the red-carpet whichwas rolled out in their hon-our.Jailoshini Naidoo(Jennifer Kandasamy),Maeshni Naicker (ShantiNaidoo), MishqahParthiephal (JodiKandasamy), MadhushanSingh (Prishen Naidoo)Koobeshen Naidoo (ElvisKandasamy), MariamBassa (Aya Kandasamy),Vashir Kemraj (DesanNaidoo) and Rushil Juglall(Arsevan) reprised theirrespective roles while thenewest cast member, YuganNaidoo took on the role ofPreggie Naidoo.Truly dressed for a high-class wedding as the‘Kandasamys don’t do small’ (stated by Jennifer), thecast shined as they greeted their fans with much grati-tude for making the time to attend Prishen and Jodi’swedding.Following this, the 2000-strong guest list excitedlymade their way, along with the cast and crew, to thecinema where they were met with a heartfelt on-screen ‘thank you’ message from director, Jayan

Moodley, who extended her appreciation to her fami-ly, all cast and crew members, sponsors, supportersand the fans.Kandasamys: The Wedding consisted of a rollercoast-er of different emotions and the star-studded andexceptional performances given by each of the actorsand actresses with such ease and perfection, provesthat the movie is set to be a major box-office success.Filled with laughter, drama, emotion, glitz and relat-

able experiences, Kandasamys: The Wedding hasflawlessly encapsulated the exciting and stressfultimes prior to a wedding and the sense of beautifulculture, togetherness, jubilation and overwhelminglove that can be warmly felt and witnessed on the day.Jennifer and Shanti look forward to seeing you astheir beloved children confess their eternal love foreach other so be sure to dress ‘posh’ because it’s abig, fat Indian wedding!

SATURDAY, APRIL6, saw an IFP interac-tive meeting with across-section of resi-dents fromC r a i g i e b u r n ,Widenham andSunpark. The meeting, hosted by Mrs ManithaSingh, presented anopportunity for dia-logue to take placebetween the people andtheir leaders. Speakerson the panel were theHon. MP NarendSingh, the Hon.Mkhuleko Hlengwa,IFP Nationalspokesperson andNational Youth BrigadeChairperson, and theHon. MPL LesGovender. Going intothe 2019 election, the main concern ofpeople seems to be the lies, theft andlack of accountability by the govern-ment of the day. There is also a growingconcern among South African residentsof Indian origin, whose place in thiscountry is being questioned.Their wealth and property are seen tobe at risk and there is a cloud of racialtension and conflict hanging over them, while political leaders and governmentremain silent. The ruling party is caughtin a web of grand scale corruption, internal party factions, a failing econo-my, rising costs and heavily indebtedstate-owned entities. The financial burden falls on the tax-

payers in the form of increased tariffs, taxes, VAT and fuel price hikes. If voters want to change the status quo, they will have to change their voting

patterns and NOT abstain from voting. The IFP believes that given the unstablerace relations in this country, it isimperative that leaders in all sectors ofsociety promote the agenda of socialcohesion, unity in diversity and peace-ful co-existence. South Africans ofIndian origin in particular are part of themainstream of politics. They must notfeel isolated or disassociated.According to MP Narend Singh, thereis no place in this beautiful country forrace-based politics. The Hon MkhulekoHlengwa said that the Indian communi-ty would always have a home in the IFP.MP Singh has a notable record of serv-ing the Province of KZN and particular-ly, the town of Umkomaas and sur-rounds where he continues to maketime for community service. He haschaired the Umkomaas Drift Bursary

Trust since 1969 andhas ensured each yearapplicants for tertiaryeducation receive bur-saries.The Khanya HospiceCharity Fair, alsochaired by him, willsee the building of aStep Down Centre forthe Terminally Ill inUmkomaas. A numberof housing projects, the building of hallsand roads, and electri-fication have takenplace under the IFPand have stood the testof time, unlike theshoddy workmanshipand dodgy projects oftoday.

The voters wereurged to consider the

contributions of the IFP and the level ofservice delivery they have under thecurrent government. People must not befooled by the “New Dawn” as it is thevery same people who were in powerwhen the rot set in. Voters were alsourged not to be fooled by oppositionparties who are sowing the seeds ofconflict and division in the country. The country is looking for mature,

responsible and healing leadershipbecause this country has a troubled pastand the wounds must be healed withunity, tolerance and respect. That mustbe cornerstone of this country. Those wanting to join the IFP on this

journey are welcome to invite the IFP totheir homes and should contact MrsManitha Singh on 083 789 1603, andCouncillor Jane Naidoo on 078 1549193.

IFP National Leadershipin Umkomaas

Narend Singh MP, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, MP, Les Govender MPLand Councillor Jane Naidoo (programme director).

WHEN WE undertake to serve thecommunity in elected positions, weneed to be willing to give the bestwe can to ensure that the communi-ty gets quality service delivery. At times as a ward councillor, onerealizes that this is not always pos-sible. With growing demandsacross the municipality, it isinevitable that some will receivedelayed services either because ofred-tape or because of the backlog. This is when one’s metal as a wardcouncillor is tested. Is one willingto do what is truly necessary, sothat people can have a better quali-ty of life? Or does one’s work onlystart when the workers of themunicipality are available? These are pertinent questions. As someone committed to serving

this community, I felt it incumbenton me to attend to the stormwaterdrainage in Ward 12, by hiring aprivate contractor, assisted by theCWP team. This action was necessitated by thefact that urgent attention needed tobe given to the drainage problem asmany senior citizens had com-plained, citing examples of individ-uals who had slipped and fallen. This posed a threat to the safety ofthe residents.I therefore decided to purchase thenecessary pipes and fittings to fast-track the job.Service begins with the willing-ness to do more and to give more. Itmust never stop, because there arelimited resources in local govern-ment.

Servant leadership,a key priority

No talk - Cllr Bhoola gets the job done in Ward 12.

The talented cast was all smiles at the glittering premiere

Park Rynie resident, Clinton Moodley (centre)was also a member of the cast. He is seen withhis wife, Kalay, and close friend, Sharon Pillay,at the world premiere.

LUNGISANI MKHWANE from Braemar isa man without an identity. Born in December1982, according to his mother, Lungisani’sbirth has never been registered. His mother, now deceased, was also not registered and itwas by virtue of his grandmother that hisbrother, Thando Mkhwane, was able to applyfor an ID. However the surname on the ID isspelled incorrectly.Efforts to trace school records for Lungisani atAmavenya Primary School have been fruitlessas the principal said that there were no recordsdating from before his time. Lungisani, who isunemployed, has had difficulty going to theclinic for his chronic medication. Noticingthis, Umzinto Clinic Outreach Healthcareofficial, Sifiso Gamede, visited Lungisaniwhen he found out about his problem. MrGamede then sought the assistance of socialworkers from the Department of SocialDevelopment, who assisted with food parcels, but could not do anything further as Lungisanidoes not have an ID. In November last year,Mr Gamede accompanied Lungisani to HomeAffairs to find out how he could be assisted, but nothing could be done as officials said thatwithout any school records he could not behelped. His brother cannot help him as his sur-name needs to be corrected on his identitydocument and to do this, he needs money, which he does not have as he is also unem-ployed. Thando occasionally gets casual jobsin Braemar.Without any ID Lungisani cannot find a job,nor can he apply for a social grant. He needsfood to supplement his treatment. “Our job isto go beyond the call of duty when it comes topatients and when Mr Mkhwane did not cometo collect his medication, we began to worryand followed up. We visited his home andfound that he had no job which made it diffi-cult for him to pay for transport to collect hismedication. He and his brother are living inextreme poverty and without an ID, he does-n’t exist and he is nobody,” said Mr Gamede.Park Rynie Home Affairs manager, Riana DeBruin, said that she would check to see if MrMkhwane were on the waiting list for an inter-view regarding his origin. Unfortunately thereis only one person in the province who con-ducts such interviews, so he will have to waituntil contacted by officials.

Mr Lungisani Mkhwane .

Jesus died vicariously, that is, on behalf of others. In II Corinthians 5: l4, we learn that "one died forall". Peter tells us that our perfect example "bore

our sins in His own body upon the tree." (I Peter 2:24). Jehovah made Him "to be sin for us even thoughHe knew no sin". (II Corinthians 5: 21).When asked, "Art thou the Christ?" Jesus merelyanswered "Thou sayest".The shadow of the cross loomed ever nearer anddespicable men seemed more numerous. Our dearestfriend suffered agonizingly in Gethsemane. Peter,James and John could not give even one hour ofunstinted loyalty, to ease the burden of darkness anddespair. Our Saviour died painfully. The Roman scourgingreceived prior to the actual crucifixion was enough tokill some men. The heavy burden of the cross wasadditional agony. During the first century, when onewas "nailed to the tree", one was laid on top of thecrude cross while it lay on the ground. Spikes weredriven sharply into the criminal's hands and feet. Then suddenly in excruciating pain, the cross would

be raised and planted In the ground. These terriblethings were experienced by the Greatest One whoever walked the earth. The crowd mocked him.Blood, from the wreath of thoms, flowed down Hisface. No wonder the hymn writer has touched ourhearts with these words:"See from His head, His hand,His feet, sorrow andblood flow mingled down.Did e'er such love and sorrow meet or thorns com-pose so rich a crown?"Jesus died alone. Peter denied Him. Most of the apos-tles "Followed afar off". A few faithful women stayednearby weeping. Nicodemus and Joseph would laterprepare his body for burial. Yet, for one who haddone so much for mankindthe scene around the cross was very lonely. From the cross the Redeemer cried, "My God, MyGod why hast thou forsaken me?"The Father looked away from the Son for a momentto view fallen man. In that glance we have hope ofredemption (Habakkuk I: I3). Praise God for His infi-nite love and Jesus for his willingness to offer His

life that we might never die .Thankfully the Lord had access to the Father's throneof mercy. Jesus cried, "Abba, Father ... as thou wilt".The poet has well capturedthis scene:"Broken at last I bowed my head, forgetting allmyself and said; whatever comes, God's will bedone- and in that moment, peace was won!"Jesus was executed during the Jewish feast ofPassover. Historians tell us that two million Hebrewswere in or around the city of Jerusalem for the occa-sion.So resplendent was He, even on the cross, that aCenturion stated; "Truly this was the Son of God"(Matthew 27: 54).The Church of Christ invites you to a special GoodFriday and Easter Sunday morning service, com-mencing at 8:30am at the Naidoo Memorial School,Roseneath, Umkomaas.

LEARNERS FROM St Anne’s Primary School par-ticipated in a fundraising fun walk on Wednesday,April 10. The event was organized by the gradefives. The response from the learners was over-whelming and a handsome sum of money wasraised. The enthusiastic and energetic learnerswalked from the school to Roshan Heights and back. The steep, winding driveway posed no challenge tothe Grade R walkers and neither was it an arduouschallenge for the accompanying educators.Principal, Mr R Maharaj, who was a surprise entrant, enjoyed the walk thoroughly and was as fresh as a

daisy at the finish. The residents of Roshan Heights, who were curiousand cheerful spectators, identified their children andwaved to them as the well-disciplined learnerswalked through the neighbourhood. The co-ordinator of the event, Mr M Pandarum,

thanked the staff and the learners for their assistancein making the event a resounding success. Theschool is also grateful to Umdoni ProtectionServices for escorting and safeguarding the partici-pants, and to Mr Retesh Singh of RS FinancialSolutions for sponsoring the snacks for the learners.

Wow, in the blink of an eye, we havereached the middle of April! To me, Lifeat present reminds me of those resort

horses that one rides when on holiday. On theoutward leg, the horses have to be cajoled intoraising the pace to a trot but, boy oh boy, turn forhome and they take off like rockets. I must be inthe homeward stretch!

Cycling up the R102 past the TC RobertsonNature Reserve has recently been quite a chal-lenge for me. The roadworks and traffic snarl-ups lately, have been a good excuse to select adifferent location to experience the suffering ofcycling uphill. The rumble strips that have beenlaid down to slow traffic approaching the over-head pedestrian traffic bridge, have evokedmemories from my distant past. Driving on grav-el roads one often encountered corrugations inthe road. In those days, drivers found that byspeeding up over these roads, the jarring effect

of the corrugations could be minimised.Friends and I were travelling from Port St.Johns to Umtata on the gravel road as it wasthen. Somehow, I cannot recall potholes, butcertainly corrugations were common on this

stretch of road. In the vicinity of Mlengana, commonly known as Execution Rock, weapproached a sharp bend and found a small carfacing us, but on the wrong side of the road.Thinking that the vehicle had broken down, westopped and went to see whether we could

assist in any way. The occupants were twoyoung women from Johannesburg on their wayto the coast. Going around the bend that washeavily corrugated they slowed down, and thecar bounced up and down so much that it did acompleted a 180 degree turn! We informedthem that it was not advisable to slow down toomuch when coming across corrugations. Therumble strips on the R102 are enough to makeyour teeth rattle and I wonder whether driverswill tend to speed up to minimise the vibrations– if the strips are there to calm the traffic, theymay well end up having the opposite effect. Myfirst mountain bike that I acquired thirteen yearsago, finally decided that it had had enough ofcarrying me to all ends of South Africa.Consequently, I needed to replace it. I went tothe local cycle shop, The Saddle Shack and Co.at Rocky Bay. My intention was to look for agood used mountain bike. The manager patient-ly discussed all the options open to me and leftme to consider all these at my leisure. Theadvice I received was so professional that myultimate decision was very easy. The outcomewas that I am now the happy owner of a new2018 mountain bike. The bike itself is an incred-ible improvement on my old bike, but the serviceI received at the Saddle Shack was outstanding.Makes a pleasant change from the often surlycashiers and those who work in the public ser-vice. Thank you for such a positive experience!
