Mr Ngomane said parents and people protecting criminals by using muthi, are defeating the ends of justice and as a result are commiting a crime.

“What kind of parents are those who hide criminals in their homes while innocent

Mr Ngomane pleaded with traditional leaders, healers and pastors to assist government to preach a gospel of safety and a crime-free environment.

Community members were also given a chance to ask questions to the MEC and members of the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster with regards to criminal issues.

They complained about the selling of Nyaope to young people and also alleged that some police of cers are involved.

Residents blamed the police for delaying to respond to crime scenes and alleged that some of cers misuse state vehicles.

CRIME • MISDAAD

Charl Cilliers police offi cer arrested after robberyCHARL CILLIERS - A local police constable and three suspects were arrested for business robbery on Saturday, 24 June.

This came after a group of about seven men accosted a bakery owner and his wife while they were cashing up at closing time.

According to the police, the men were armed with hand guns and robbed the couple of an undisclosed amount of cash.

The owner chased after the robbers, while his wife activated the security alarms. The swift response by Kasselman Security guards and the police saw the immediate arrest of four of the perpetrators before they reached their getaway vehicle that was waiting close to the scene. Police discovered that one of the apprehended culprits is a police of cer from the Charl Cilliers Police Station.

His service pistol was also found in the gateway vehicle. The three robbers who managed to escape are still at large, however the police are optimistic they will be found soon.

“It is devastating to nd that police of cers are involved in crime,”said Lt Gen Mondli Zuma, Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga.

“However be that as it may, we will work closely with the community to ensure that we gather information that will assist us to nab all those who are responsible for orchestrating criminal activities within our ranks.

“I promise the public that the investigation team will make sure we have a watertight case against the suspects so they can languish in jail for a long time.” Lt Gen Zuma said an internal investigation against the arrested of cer is underway.

Bethal Municipal workers face corruption chargesBETHAL - Three municipal cashiers working at the Bethal of ce, are facing corruption charges.

These Govan Mbeki Municipal employees were suspended for allegedly stealing millions of rands from the municipality.

This came after management noted a discrepancy when they balanced the books.

Mr Bheki Kubheka, spokesman, con rmed the employees were suspended.

A criminal case was opened at the Bethal Police Station. Police said they are investigating. Nobody has yet been arrested.

Illegal miners become uncontrollableeMBALENHLE - The number of illegal miners are increasing daily and the miners are apparently becoming uncontrollable at the Osizweni Development Centre.

This has left business owners operating in the area with no choice but to vacate the premises, which will have a huge impact on their businesses.

The Zama-zamas began invading the area in March.

Since then no one has been arrested, though the police claimed some were arrested.

There are however allegedly no records to substantiate their claims.

A business owner, Mr Herman Marx, said he has lost con dence in the police because they are failing to deal with the crime happening in broad daylight.

He said the police are always saying they must do something about this, but nothing is done.

“I had no choice but to move my business to another premises. It is sad, because it will also affect my employees.”

Mr Marx said his workers used to walk to work, but they now have to pay taxi fares.

“I am very angry, because if the police cannot protect us, who can?

Mr Marx said the estimated value of his loss is more than R300 000.

Mr Velaphi Gumbi, Osizweni’s general manager, said the illegal miners are demanding the right to mine.

He said business owners are naturally terri ed and concerned and property and stock are being damaged in the process.

Brig Leonard Hlathi, provincial police spokesman, said the province and the national police are working on strategies to tackle the problem of illegal mining in the area.

“This is a national problem and we are working round the clock to deal with it.

“We will also intensify police visibility in the affected areas.

“The provincial commissioner has

established a task force that will be working closely to solve the problem.

“In the meantime, we urge the community to help the police to ght any form of crime.”

Mense noem hom Bubbles omdat hy glo baie praat.

SECUNDA - Govan Mbeki Municipality’s mayor says the culture of non payment for services is hampering the work of the municipality and is causing a serious service delivery backlog.

Ms Flora Maboa-Boltman was speaking at the Secunda Cluster prize-giving on Friday, 23 June at Sasol Secunda Club.

She said Council is facing serious challenges while the real culprits are living normal lives.

She said the municipality has been viewed negatively and people believe the municipality does not deliver.

“People have forgotten that delivery costs money and without it, we cannot delivery services.

“For example, Ward 1 in eMbalenhle owes the municipality R19-million just for one month.

“Residents steal electricity and do illegal connections.

“We launched a project in an attempt to

address these problems, but the media gave it bad publicity.

“They said it is a nonsensical project.”Ms Maboa-Boltman said it is unfortunate

that big businesses and government of cials are among the non payers.

Govan Mbeki Municipality has escaped several threats from Eskom regarding bulk power cuts, however Council had managed to negotiate a payment plan.

The municipality also owes Rand Water millions of a rand and in March it unfolded that Council was failing to pay the Rand Water debt because it made a large payment to Eskom.

Ms Maboa-Boltman said the municipality defaulted on the payment due to a lack in the cash ow and she blames those who have illegal connections or refuse to pay their own accounts.

“Operation Kodiko was doing something good, but was critised.

“I encourage everybody to be responsible citizens of this municipality and pay for services rendered.”

Engela Scheepers groet Bethal na jare se diensBETHAL - Me.

Me.

Me.

“Ek en my man, Wim Scheepers, is in 1959 getroud.

Haar seun is egter sowat ses jaar gelede

Me. Scheepers het by Hoërskool Hoogenhout op Bethal as onderwyser begin a os.

Me.

kroningsaand aangebied.Me.

“My lewe was vol daardie tyd.“Wanneer jy iewers in ’n ander dorp of

Me.

“Government bursaries made it possible for students from the rural community to enroll at the college.” Mr Balkrishen said the strategic importance of partnerships between the college and businesses, industries and employers ensure the college’s curriculum is aligned with the needs of the industry.

He told guests and parents about the recent launch of the Samsung Engineering Academy that is situated at the Standerton Skills Academy.

“This academy will focus

on programmes linked to refrigeration and air conditioning and will also train students on how to repair Samsung electronic products, including cell phones and washing machines.

“Gert Sibande TVET College prides itself on producing high quality students as this enhances opportunities for students.

“Fourteen electrical engineering students were offered the opportunity to go to China on a 12-month learnership programme funded by MerSETA and the Chinese and South African governments.

“The students will get the opportunity to study at top Chinese universities and also get practical experience at Chinese manufacturing companies.”

Mr Balkrishen acknowledged the importance that support played by the college council, staff, SRC and parents.

Delivering a keynote address, Dr Beeka shared his educational journey to achieve a doctorate in education and of qualifying as an advocate.

“I am overwhelmed to see the graduates and their parents and I appreciate the fact that parents are present to support their children on

this special day.“You should never forget

where you came from and you should always honour, respect and love your parents.

“Material things do not make you a person, but it is your attitude towards life.”

Speaking on behalf of the Student Representative Council, the president, Mr Nhlakanipho Nkosi, said he was proud to see young people graduating during Youth Month.

“Many young people look up to you and I thank your parents for supporting you throughout the years, it was not an easy road for them.”

Ms Raksha Gobinpersadh (40),a graduate, needed a change of career.

“I wanted to do something that will challenge me mentally and physically.

“I enrolled in electrical engineering at Gert Sibande TVET College, Standerton campus, and completed my N4.

“I was employed at Tutuka Power Station as a learner electrician and in 2016 obtained my diploma.

“I was permanently employed as an electrical technician in April this year.

“It does not matter how long it takes, because you will become a winner through the grace of God and hard work.”

Chantal Beyers Smith: The problem on that road is speeding, overtaking on a solid line and impatient drivers. The N17 is not a dangerous road at all. It is careless drivers that are dangerous.

ROSES

The rose goes to the Sasol’s Ikusasa Corporate Social Investment Project. Sasol is repairing Kleynhans Street in Bethal, as well as other roads and intersections in the municipal area.

Secunda residents are unhappy with the way in which Govan Mbeki Municipality trimmed the trees on the sidewalk in front of their houses last week. The trees were trimmed to make way for streetlight repairs, but according to one resident, there are no streetlights on this side of the road.

SECUNDA - Theatre play fans had the opportunity to watch Madam Sarah at the Johannes Stegmann Theatre this past weekend.

The play teaches how daily life struggles expose people to be conned by sangomas and fake pastors.

Zoliswa Delihlazo, a gospel music artist, proved to be an excellent actor and won the audience’s hearts when she lost her child who was used for muthi in the play.

The audience also cheered when Past Muzi Khumalo, also a pastor in real life, led a gospel song.

The garden boy was played by Bheki (Nsimbi) Zwane who was able to capture the audience’s attention with his outstanding performance.

His excellent skills were complemented by the domestic worker, his wife in the play, Asanda Gobongwane.

Madam Sarah was played by Snazo Kunene and Philip was played by Zaid.

Sarah is accused of being married to her work and not giving attention to her husband.

Boy, played by Bheki Zwane, accused his wife of not bearing him children.

The play will also be shown in eMalahleni and Mbombela soon.

Madam Sarah was written and directed by Bheki Nsimbi Zwane, who said one of the challenges was to nd white players to act as Sarah and Philip.

Zwane began acting in high school and after matric became an amateur actor in Gauteng before he was recognised by the

Madam Sarah enjoyed by audience

internationally renowned South African playwright and theatre producer Mbongeni Ngema with whom he travelled the world.

He said working with Ngema helped him to understand everything about writing, composing, directing and acting.

Zwane will soon appear in the movie Asinamali that was written and directed by Ngema.

Asinamali was a stage play that was written in 1983 and had a sold-out run at the Market Theatre before it appeared

on Broadway in New York as well as worldwide. During his time with Ngema, he also played in the Lion of the East which exposed the abuse of farm workers by white farmers in Bethal.

He also does voluntary drama teaching at Sasolia Primary School on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

For more information about the play, follow Zwane on the Nsimbi Bheki Zwane Facebook page or contact him at 072 351 8321.

SECUNDA - Residents in the Govan Mbeki Municipal area should be aware of an outbreak of the canine parvo virus, also known as cat u.

According to Ms Jenneth Geel, senior inspector at the Highveld Ridge SPCA, this is a killer disease that can affect all dogs.

“It is most dangerous to unvaccinated dogs as they have no immunity against the virus, but even some dogs who have been vaccinated might fall ill.

“Keep a close eye on your pets and do not ignore the symptoms.

“If your dog seems ill, get to your vet as fast as you can.”

The symptoms of the canine parvo virus include a long list of symptoms, but with this outbreak dogs show the following symptoms rst:

1. Depression and subdued behaviour.2. Vomiting.

3. Bloody diarrhea (even mild diarrhea must not be ignored).

These symptoms can quickly escalate in severity and you need to take your dog to a vet at the rst sign of abnormal behaviour.

Only with careful nursing and timely treatment by a vet might your dog stand a chance of surviving this deadly disease.

“We urge dog owners to ensure their pets’ vaccinations are up to date and that all puppies are vaccinated according to the prescribed vaccination schedule.”

This disease is highly contagious and though it does not pose a risk to humans, humans are often the carriers of the disease on their clothes, shoes and hands.

“The virus can survive on clothing, shoes, bedding and animal toys, and is also transferred through feces.

“Make sure to wash your hands after you have touched a strange dog and ensure that you do not bring the disease into your own home.”

Willemien Aukema

HIGHVELD - Whether or not to vaccinate your child is a decision every parent has to make.

For many parents, the thought of vaccinating their children can bring about sleepless nights, especially knowing that your child will shed tears every time they get a shot.

Vaccinations have its pros and cons. With the outbreak of measles in Gauteng and the Western Cape recently, the importance of vaccines has once again been highlighted.

It is recommended by healthcare practitioners, as well as the Department of Health, that parents should have their children vaccinated to protect them against childhood diseases, some of which can cause lasting damage or result in death.

The South African Government provides vaccines free of charge at municipal clinics, but they are also available from private practitioners. Vaccines are thus readily available in an attempt to prevent common childhood diseases.

Due to vaccinations being the most cost effective method of ensuring better health for the majority of people, as well as the success nations have had in reducing the occurrence of childhood diseases, vaccinating your child seems like it should be a no brainer.

According to the South African Journal of Infectious Diseases, immunisation has led to the elimination of the wild polio virus, maternal and neonatal tetanus, and has

drastically reduced cases of measles. There are many proven bene ts when it

comes to vaccinations, however in the past few years the number of people choosing not to vaccinate has increased.

Some parents are taking a stand against vaccinations as some recent studies show vaccinations in addition to other adverse reactions, can cause children to develop autism.

The Ridge Times previously reported about Casey Els, a young girl who had complications after being vaccinated that

caused her to go blind, mute and unable to control her body.

In her case, although very rare, her immune disorder caused her to contract TB when she was vaccinated against the disease.

Groups that advocate non vaccination have gone as far as to claim there is no proof that vaccines reduce childhood diseases and that people that have been vaccinated, have compromised immune systems.

A disease such as measles can only be eradicated completely if the entire population has been vaccinated.

Although the choice to vaccinate is a personal one, the importance of vaccines can not be denied.

Restaurant raises money for Entobeko Day Care CentreSECUNDA - Oregon Spur recently hosted a Heritage Day fundraiser for Entobeko Day Care Centre.

According to Mr Armand Riekert, the goal was to remind people that it does not matter where you come from, but rather what you do and who you are.

Spur handed over 10 per cent of the pro t for the evening to the centre to help cover the cost of caring for the children.

Ms Constance Mulaudzi, a driving force behind the fundraiser and the founder of the Women with Purpose organisation, explained that the day care centre is a cause close to her heart and the money will help to alleviate the harsh conditions that the staff and children at the centre have to deal with.

“The centre is run from a shack, but the staff are caring and dedicated and make a difference in the

community. I want to support them and take hands with local businesses such as Spur, to help out when we see a need in our community.”

Ms Mulaudzi explained that the idea behind her organisation was to mobilise women to be the feet on the ground and to be aware of the needs of others.

“If we look around us and are aware of the needs of others, we can make a difference.”

Children from Entobeko Day Care Centre were excited to be at the Spur. Here are Minenhle Mahlangu, Jabulisa Thungo, Lunga Khumalo, Jabula Mtsweni and Mr Graham Edward Leach. Behind them are Malazo Ntando and Mighty Thungo.

SECUNDA - AfriForum recently performed further water tests in the greater Mpumalanga area.

The water in eMalahleni, Middelburg, Delmas, Secunda, Standerton, Bethal, Trichardt, Kinross, Evander, Charl Cilliers, Kriel, Greylingstad, Morgenzon and Balfour was tested in May to ascertain the quality of these towns’ drinking water and sewage.

“We established that the drinking water in the province is clean and contains no heavy metals, while bacteria levels adhere to applicable standards.

“However, AfriForum will test the water quality continuously to protect the constitutional rights of the residents of these towns to ensure they are provided with clean drinking water,” said Mr Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s regional coordinator

for Mpumalanga West. The civil rights organisation expressed

concerns over the sewage that does not adhere to set standards in Standerton, Morgenzon, Balfour, Bethal and Middelburg.

“We must give attention to the sewage plants. We cannot allow un t municipal of cers to pollute our water resources and we plan to take action in terms of the mandate given to us by residents.”

AfriForum’s national Blue and Green Drop Project focuses on the quality of the drinking water and the sewage plants.

The project does not necessarily focus on the condition of the sewage plant itself, but rather on the quality of the water released after the cleaning process.

“We ask residents to give AfriForum the mandate to continuously monitor their towns’ water quality.”

Dit was egter ’n verrassende landbouvergadering met me.

Ester Booyens, skakel by 083 362 0025.

Hier is haar vriendin, me. Tersia Roux, me.

Me.

Sonja Kempen by 084 602 4198.

eMbalenhle residents march against the killing of women and children.

Bishop says people do not have a conscienceeMBALENHLE - Residents marched against the abuse and killing of women and children recently.

The march was led by Bishop David Mkhize from the Holy Trinity Church who said they decided to say enough is enough.

“People no longer have a conscience and we decided to spread the Word as Christians.”

He sent a message to men that they should be faithful and play their role as the protectors of those around them.

Bishop Mkhize further mentioned that men should be responsible in such a way that women and children would trust them enough to go to them should they need any

help. He encouraged the police to continue

doing their best to arrest the culprits and to ensure those who are guilty are not granted bail.

The march was triggered by the recent reporting on women killed by their partners and children who were raped by their fathers or close relatives.

Bishop Mkhize said they are planning to continue with the awareness and to involve professionals to make sure those affected get proper counselling.

The South African Police Service SABC 2 television program, When Duty Calls, also covered the event and was broadcast.

Businesswomen from SACBW learn more about fi nancial issuesTRICHARDT - The South African Council for Business Women (SACBW) recently hosted a meeting to inform businesswomen about the various kinds of businesses and the risks and bene ts attached.

The meeting was held at Multilink Conference Centre and the speaker was Mr Rene Reyneke, a nancial adviser.

Mr Reyneke outlined what a small business is and the bene ts thereof.

“It is not how you do your tax, because there are ways and means to do it.

“Do not think a small business, a close corporation or a private company is meant to be a good bene t for tax purposes, because there are major risks involved.”

Mr Reyneke gave an example of people who register their companies correctly, but when they go to the bank for a loan, they stand as security and when the company goes bankrupt, they are in trouble though

their companies were registered correctly. Mr Reyneke advised business owners to

make sure they have a medical aid. Ms Shimona Mariah, chairman of

SACBW Secunda branch, said a summit was held in Centurion on 24 June for small business owners.

It helped business owners to identify mistakes they make and how to correct them.

Members have the opportunity to network and advertise their businesses through the organisation’s social media.

SACBW Secunda branch raises money for a charity every two months and the money for May was raised for the Highveld Ridge SPCA.

For more information about SACBW, send an email to [email protected].

For nancial advice, contact Mr Reyneke at 0176381048.

Mr Nkosinathi Nkuna, Ms Shimona Mariah, Ms Mashudu Mulaudzi and Ms Ancois van Zyl at the SACBW Secunda branch meeting held at the Multilink Conference Centre.

GMM now available on WhatsappHIGHVELD - According to a press release issued by the acting head of Communications and Marketing of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Bekhi Kubheka, the municipality has gone one step further in an attempt to improve service delivery.

They can now be contacted on Whatsapp,

“This number has been established for the purpose

of reporting service delivery complaints through messaging and picture sharing and it is linked with the call centre.

“We encourage the community to take advantage of the technological advances of cell phones by taking pictures of their service delivery complaints and thereafter sending a location pin to the municipality

through the same method.“The municipality can

respond to a complaint faster if we do not have to waste time trying to pinpoint the exact location of the problem.

“We must emphasise that this number is not a replacement of the existing call centre numbers, but is a supplement for messaging only.” The Whatsapp number is 083 790 0659.

Khasanda releases her single ablum Umjim UmjikelezoKINROSS - Asanda (Khasanda) Khasana released her single album, Umjikelezo, under the commercial house genre.

Her journey as an artist began when she was a member of a worshipping team at her church.

Khasanda was identi ed by a well-known gospel artist, Zoliswa Delihlazo, who asked her to be her backing vocalist.

“Ms Delihlazo knows many artists and when they perform in the area and are in need of artists, she always recommends me,” said Khasanda who was a backing vocalist for gospel artists such as Thobile Myeni and Khayalethu Masuku from Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors.

She got her breakthrough in music when she met Sibusiso (Da louf) Masombuka who was performing in Kinross and asked her to write her own song.

Da louf is part of the Black Master group.

He loved Khasanda’s voice and the way she performed the song and recommended her to Biziwe Collin Masango who signed a recording deal with her.

After she released her album, she was booked to perform in Pretoria and Botswana, among others.

“Music is a career out of which I can see myself make a living,” said Khasanda.

She encouraged her followers to ask radio stations to play her song, “Umjikelezo”.

Her music is also available online and her video on YouTube.

Khasanda is available on Facebook at Khasanda the Vocalist, on Twitter at @khasanda_vocalist and on Instagram at khasanda_vocalist.

Besides her singing career, she also helps out at Siphumelele Youth Centre in Kinross.

Contact her at [email protected] or [email protected].

School bids farewell to beloved gatekeepereMBALENHLE - Teachers and learners from Basizeni Special School cried when they bid farewell to Mr Paulos Masilela.

Learners were singing and dancing and said they will no longer have someone to chase them around the school when they are naughty.

Mr Masilela was said to be the best gatekeeper who took his job seriously and arrived at work on time to make sure he opens the gate for everyone.

Ms Makkie Ngakatau referred to him as a father and a friend who was always ready to help everyone.

Some teachers said they realised they had the best gatekeeper when they visited other schools and had to wait for a long time for the gate to be opened.

Ms Florence Thabani, a teacher, said the day she began working at the school, Mr Masilela was the rst person she met.

He also taught her how to drive a car. Mr Masilela had 24 years of service at

Basizeni Special School and thanked the staff for the good relationship they had with him.

His nal words were that people think being a gatekeeper is easy, but it is not.

“Some people are in a bad mood when they arrive and others already judge you, but as the gatekeeper you should always be approachable,” said Mr Masilela.

The principal said Mr Masilela’s transport to school was not available and he arrived

“Provinsiale spelers kom vanuit rugbyklubs.
