Abstract

Line of work of the artist and communication designer Patrick Palucki that deals with con-sciousness and signification processes. Palucki observes contemporary human sign- and (digital) toolmaking. He has gathered various artefacts from that field and has created works with and about these.

A central idea is that any communication-technology, such as language, must reflect the con-ceptual systems of its maker(s). Therefor our artefacts will contain information about the sta-tus and the transformation of 21st century human views of the world and of the human posi-tion within it.

As we are (successfully) striving to ever extend and transcend our physical reach and as we are continuously transferring communication and activities into the virtual realm and process-ing agency through it, we may look at what kind of signifiers are in use.

While our digital tools often suggest a functional horizon of endless possibility their semantic suchness, i.e. design, displays anthropo-morph and -centric perspectivity as well.

On the other hand we find an amount of symbols and signs that refer to holistic, philosophic or spiritual concepts or to extended inter-relatedness. This, however, is being used to f.i. pro-mote technology and commerce, propagate lifestyles or illustrate creativity and possibility.

The semantic effect of signs and tools represents the potential to recursively shape our con-cept of reality. So, it is of interest how ideas are created and perpetrated through the suchness of the things we create - aside to a readiness or inevitability of progress or evolution. Therefor the question of reality and belief systems is central to this cyber- anthropological work.

The work specifically aims to raise questions about primordial content, changes and novel items within consciousness. Some instances offer the occurrence of emergence or quantum properties able to be witnessed in the realm of signification.

There is a continous and increasing appearance of mystical notions echoing in brandnames, logos and advertising messages in various branches of industry.

In the technology sector there is a canon of heraldry that propagates extended influence and inter-relatedness through a communion of the body and the machine.

Since these faculties are associated with and were traditionally reserved to the notion of the divine, it is actually a logical progression that mystical connotations are in use. Even though, one might argue that there is a force of becoming at play, that is partially subconscious, or the pull of an at-tractor.

Technology appears as the prosthesis to allow for an evolution towards the omniscient and omnip-otent, transhumanism appears as the strategy. If the longing for transcendence and immortality displays itself in human intention and creation and gives a direction to it´s evolution, the idea becomes evident that we are in fact dreaming our reality and future into existence.

The Cycle of becoming and ceasing was translated by Joseph Campbell as the cosmogonic cycle or the journey of the hero: Away from convention (escape from society) through hardship to wisdom (control of the inner demons) and return to society to present findings and reform convention.
