In 2006, Craig Olden, Inc. was selected as one of the contractors for building part of the new Dallas Cowboy stadium in Arlington, Texas. The playing field for the new stadium is 50 feet below grade. This required a massive earth retention system of over 200,000 square feet of wall. Olden engineered and constructed this permanent earth retention system in less than five months. Olden constructed a Zero Clearance Shoring System providing close tolerance, smooth, planer concrete face allowing one- sided forming for cast in place basement, retaining, and soil/rock nail walls. This was a soil nail wall containing 8,000 nails or anchors. This method has three clear advantages: Less Cost – Eliminates outside form and backfill Less Time – Save forming and backfill time Less Space – Maximizes construction area The site required 1.4 million cubic yards of excavation. The project was equipment and personnel intensive with 12 to 14 hour work days for 5 months. These constraints led to Trevor Bray, Vice President of Craig Olden, Inc. to approach his HOLT CAT PSSR Robert Dobbs to see how HOLT could help in keeping his machines running smoothly on such a time sensitive project. BasicSpecificationsforM-SeriesMotorGradersImagine a motor grader that is not only

easier for experienced operators to handle, but also one that is simple for beginners to learn to operate as well. Caterpillar has not only imagined this revolutionary piece of equipment, they have made it a reality. Because of the many control inputs required and the precision work performed by motor graders, they were widely regarded as the most difficult of all earthmoving machines to operate. Caterpillar’s introduction of the M-Series Motor Graders is about to change all of that.

• Easier DCM (drawbar, circle and moldboard) maintenance™ Easy-to-adjust, bi-directional

moldboard slide rail wear

• High torque all-wheel-drive™ All-wheel-drive option delivers

42 percent more torque than the previous H-Series system.

™ Dedicated left and right pumps, which allow independent control of hydraulic flow to each front wheel hydrostatic motor.

• Advanced power management™ Variable horsepower (VHP) is now

standard

™ Optional Variable Horsepower Plus

• New engines and drivetrain™ Cat C-Series engines with ACERT ™

$$ $$Life Cycle Costing ... Your Purchasing PartnerLife Cycle Costing (LCC) is a concept that more and more local and state governmental agencies are embracing, but it is not limited to agencies. The LCC process works for anyone

considering the purchase of a piece of equipment. It allows you to obtain the best equipment at the lowest overall cost. And it eliminates surprises, allowing you to accurately budget your equipment expenses. In more detail, Life Cycle Costing (LCC) is a type of price/performance evaluation. It involves a broad-based evaluation of operating, maintenance, financing, other ownership and

usage costs, and resale or residual value in addition to acquisition price.Below are examples of items that agencies or a private individual can choose from when evaluating Life Cycle Cost (LCC):

• Transaction Price• Less Trade-In Value• Less Trade-In/ Resale/ Residual Value• Equals Initial Purchase Price

• Plus Fuel Consumption Cost• Plus Scheduled Maintenance Expense• Plus Repair Expense

• Plus Extended Warranty Coverage• Plus Machine uptime • Equals Total Life Cycle Cost

Here are some questions and answers that will help define this concept even more.

How does LCC benefit an agency or a private individual? In a nutshell, it saves money and it minimizes uncertainties. It allows you to truly buy the best piece of equipment for your situation. Let’s say you buy a machine on just the original cost. That will show savings over the higher bidders (providing this is an agency purchase), but that’s just an up-front figure. What about the cost of operating that machine over five or seven years? If that machine goes down, it often means you have to rent a replacement. And at the end of five years, you are subject to the whims of the market to determine the residual value that piece of machinery has.

&A

Q

In the case of an agency, isn’t buying off low bid typical? It used to be, but this is rapidly changing just as many other areas in this industry are. Buying off low bid is just buying off low initial purchase price. This method misses many items that impact an agency more that just the initial budget for the equipment purchase. It overlooks the training that can be offered, the parts network available to keep the machine running, the service support available, the machines residual/trade-in value, etc. There are many items that agencies require that are often overlooked on the initial machine bid.

&A

Q

Residual/trade-in value – how can this impact the purchaser? The original purchase price and the price a purchaser can receive for the machine at the end of the contract is key. The difference between those two figures is where you can start looking at the total cost to a purchaser. For example, let’s say, in the case of an agency, two bids are received for a machine. Machine A is quoted at $100,000 and Machine B at $80,000. Machine B may look like the best option, but let’s say the resale value is $60,000 for Machine A, but only $30,000 for Machine B. That means Machine A is the lowest-cost option for the agency.

&A

Q

How important is maintenance and how does a purchaser or agency decide what to do?Maintenance, both in terms of speed and quality, is indeed important. At HOLT CAT, we have skilled technicians trained to maintain Cat® machines. With our vast fleet of service trucks, maintenance can be completed on the purchaser’s site. We’ll sit down with a customer and help determine their maintenance needs. Those needs vary depending on each customer’s support capability and their specific use for machines. It may be acceptable if a mower is out of service for two or three days. Not so with a landfill compactor or a backhoe loader in the middle of a water main repair.

&A

Q

Is there anything an LCC contract doesn’t include? Not at HOLT CAT. Our goal is to ensure that everyone, be it governmental agency, contractor, quarry, etc., gets the most value from their machine. We have decades of experience we can bring to the table to help the purchaser determine how they can do that. In the end though, the only limits are the purchaser’s needs – and imagination. If, for example, in the case of an agency, emissions or fuel economy are concerns, an agency can include those requirements in its bid spec.

&A

Q

How does Life Cycle Costing square with low-cost bidding requirements in an agency purchase?Life Cycle Costing strengthens the low-cost bid concept. And it strengthens the competitive bidding process by ensuring that agencies, and the taxpayers they serve, receive the most for their money. LCC does not favor one machinery dealer over another. It favors the agency and taxpayers. That’s why numerous governmental associations and agencies have endorsed and encouraged its use.

&A

Q

What Governmental associations currently support LCC?The American Bar Association’s Model Procurement Code encourages the use of life cycle cost elements when preparing a bid spec. Other associations that back the concept include the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP), National Association of State Procurement Officials (NASPO) and the National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA).&

AQ

How does an agency or any other customer go about incorporating Life Cycle Costing?Your HOLT CAT sales representative can help you with any and all your LCC needs. You can also visit www.govbidspec.com as there is a lot of information out there on LCC. CATERPILLAR® F-SeriesOff-HighwayTrucks

DELIVERThe type of application for which people

utilize their off-highway trucks varies. The Caterpillar F-Series Off-Highway Trucks allow for such versatility. A variety of body styles for the 773F and 775F enable you to configure a truck for the specific application — to achieve optimum capacity and durability.

The 773F and 775F are designed for quarry and construction applications in the 60-ton (54.4-tonne) and 70-ton (63.5-tonne) payload classes, respectively. The two smaller F-Series models replace the 773E and 775E. The 777F is in the 100-ton (90.9-tonne) payload class, and it replaces the 777D. The versatile 777F has applications in quarrying, construction and mining.

Caterpillar offers dual slope and flat floor body systems with three different steel liner packages and two rubber liner packages on the 773F and 775F. The 777F has a rubber liner available in addition to the steel liner.

The Caterpillar® 773F, 775F and 777F Off-Highway Trucks incorporate many features to enhance performance, productivity and reliability, as well as operator comfort and control.

The F-Series trucks feature Cat engines with ACERT Technology for fuel-efficient operation, emissions compliance and responsive, reliable performance. The 773F and 775F both use the Cat C27 engine — producing net power of 703 hp (524 kW) in the 773F and 740 hp (552 kW) in the 775F. The 777F has a Cat C32 engine with ACERT Technology. Net power is 938 hp (700 kW).

LONGER MAINTENANCE INTERVALS Due mainly to the efficient combustion technology, the engine service interval for each of the trucks is 500 hours — twice that of previous truck models.

QuickEvac, the Caterpillar on-board engine oil evacuation and pre-lube system, is standard on F-Series trucks and reduces oil change labor time by as much as 50 percent.

TRANSMISSION The F-Series seven-speed transmission provides a superior ride with smoother speed and directional shifts through the use of the Electronic Clutch Pressure Control (ECPC) system. The system individually modulates each clutch in the transmission and extends the life of drivetrain components.

HyDRAuLICS The F-Series brakes are all-hydraulic, rather than air-over-hydraulic. The result is superior reliability, response, control, serviceability and modulation. The parking brake is integrated into the gear selector for easy operation.

AuTOMATIC RETARDER CONTROL Automatic retarder control (ARC) is standard on F-Series trucks. ARC automatically controls braking on grade and maintains engine speed at approximately 1,900 rpm. ARC protects the engine from overspeeding, improves fuel efficiency, provides better control of the truck, increases productivity and eases the burden on the operator. In addition to the standard automatic retarder, the compression brake option offers a 35 percent increase in retarding speed capabilities.

ONBOARD MANAGEMENT SySTEMS Valuable machine information is available to the operator or technician through Cat Messenger, which provides real-time and stored machine performance and diagnostic data. An optional VIMS™ monitoring system offers more extensive machine function and payload data. For payload recording,

the enhanced Truck Payload Management System (TPMS) attachment now has second gear weighing capability and 2,400-cycle storage for data analysis.

Why should I switch to pre-mixed CAT® Extended Life Coolant?

• Saves up to 70% on coolant and additive costs depending on system capacity.• CAT Extented Life Coolant increases coolant change-out interval from 2,000 hours /200,000 miles /2 years to 12,000 hours /5 years

(machines and commercial engines) and 600,000 miles /6 years (truck engines).• Supplemental Coolant Conditioner Additives are no longer required. Only one maintenance intervention is required using CAT Extender

(part #119-5152) at mid-life 6,000 hours /300,000 miles.• Eliminates silica gel formation. Contains no silicates, phosphates or borates.• Excellent protection against cylinder cavitation corrosion.• Maximizes water pump seal life.• Reduces coolant disposal volume by up to 50% over standard coolants.

What do I need to do to make the switch to CAT Long Life Coolant Antifreeze?

It’s easy, but there are a few important steps you should follow when you convert from using conventional antifreeze: STEP 1: Use CAT Cooling System Cleaner (part #4C4611 or equivalent) to clean system. STEP 2: Flush the system thoroughly with water. STEP 3: Add Extended Life Coolant.Note/Caution: You should not mix conventional antifreeze with Extended Life Coolant.

CHOOSINGYour TireChoosing the right tire for your equipment

deserves some time and attention. The initial purchase price matters, but it’s just one of many factors to consider.

The right tire reduces operating costs. Tire industry experts estimate new tire purchases represent about two-thirds of the typical skid steer loader user’s preventive maintenance costs during the first 2,000 hours of operation. That figure doesn’t include the cost of repairing flats, lost production or downtime. Tires that last longer and experience fewer flats reduce total operating costs and improve profitability.

The right tire can boost productivity and profit potential. Properly applied tires minimize fuel consumption. High-quality tire designs can be retread for a second life. The tires you select help determine where you can work, how fast you travel, how much you carry, provide operator comfort and help determine how long you run without downtime.

OptionsAboundThe application in which the machine will

operate and the underfoot conditions on the jobsites are the most important factors in tire choice. Tire manufacturers offer a broad selection of products that fall into two basic categories – pneumatic and solid.

Pneumatic tires incorporate a hollow interior cavity that must be filled with air or polyurethane. They are available in several grades:

• Low-grade models carry the lowest purchase price, but are normally designed to meet rock-bottom requirements for performance and

durability.• Medium-grade tires improve traction,

reduce maintenance time, prevent flats and extend wear life.

• Medium-grade flotation tires exert low ground pressure and provide a stable ride in soft underfoot conditions.

• Medium-grade tires with extra sidewall protection offer a smooth, stable ride on uneven surfaces. They’re also exceptional for puncture resistance, quick maintenance and the ability to continue working even if they go flat.

• High-grade tires feature heavy-duty carcass strength, extra-deep tread, rugged side walls and extra-large rim guards for reliable performance in service applications.

Solidtireshavenointeriorcavityandaresolidallthewaythrough.

• Standard solid tires with no lugs run on smooth, hard, improved surfaces. They carry heavy loads, never go flat and last about three times longer than pneumatic tires.

• Flexible solid tires with pneumatic-style lugs can run on improved or unimproved surfaces. Their key benefits include excellent traction, no flats, long life and a more comfortable ride than standard solid tires. Tires with oval holes, like Caterpillar Flexport tires give a more comfortable ride and longer tire life.

• Tire fill. Pneumatic tires can be filled with polyurethane instead of air. The initial price for a polyurethane-filled tire

is higher, but it will be more economical overall because it will never go flat.

Poly-filled tires can be re-tread, allowing them to live several times longer than their air-filled counterparts. Fill also reduces a tire’s operating temperature, improves shock absorption and provides excellent stability. Be aware of “chunk fill” types of fill. This type of fill that has re-used material, or chunks, can cause damage to the tire and void warranties.

• Mounted assemblies. Some suppliers allow you to purchase your tires complete as mounted assemblies. Mounted tire assemblies can be installed quickly with minimum downtime, so they’re ideal for emergency repairs. Mounted assemblies met OEM specifications and provide a perfect, airtight fit.

HOLT CAT will work with you to understand

the environment you operate in, the type of work you need to do and your overall business objectives. We’ll help you select a tire that will deliver maximum productivity and optimum life at the lowest total cost. Rainey Construction, LLC in Utopia, Texas was founded by David Rainey over 35 years ago specializing in brush clearing on area

ranches. In 1992, David’s son Dexter came aboard and has helped grow the business. Today, Rainey Construction not only does

brush clearing but they build roads, tanks, 4 to 5,000 foot private airstrips and most recently, a natural terrain dam.

The Rainey’s fleet of equipment has grown and with the added work load, they have come to rely on CAT equipment to help them get their jobs done. Rainey’s current equipment inventory includes 12 Cat machines that were purchased, in part because of operator comfort, cab sound proofing and the fact that they last a long time. “When it comes down to it, you simply can’t beat a Caterpillar machine for reliability and ruggedness,” said Dexter Rainey. “We bought a Cat scrapper in 1985 and today it has over 20,000 hours on it and she still runs like a champ.”

“There’s no comparison when it comes down to field service, lube service and parts - HOLT

CAT has the total service we want to take care of our machines,” said Dexter. Rainey recalls that 9 out of 10 phone conversations he’s had with a HOLT CAT field supervisor has resulted in Keith Collins, their Product Support Sales Representative or a field mechanic showing up with the right part and getting them up and running again.

David Rainey admits that from time to time small problems occur, “but HOLT is fair and easy to work with, just tell them the problem and it gets fixed. Our partnership works so well because there is never any problem that we can’t come to a resolution on together.”

Still Running Strong

When Jimmy Sisak from Texas Industries bought a Cat 216A Skid Steer Loader in 1998, he did not expect it to last for 9,1000 hours. Most customers trade in their skid steer loaders at about 3,000 hours, but not Jimmy.” We could not justify trading this machine in when there was nothing wrong with it.” The Cat 216A is currently being used for clean up in and around the plants

conveyers. “We use this machine for anything and everything, especially for cleaning up rocks that fall off the conveyer belt, TXI really prides itself in having a clean and a safe environment,” said Jimmy. This has been one of the best machines we had so far. Ten people are assigned to this machine and we also use it to train our new employees.

Construction equipment that is 8 years old with 9,100 total machine hours may have had some repairs done over the years. “ We have had no major repairs on our Cat Skid

Steer Loader except for normal wear and tear. When asked what might have contributed to the longevity of the machine, Jimmy said,” We do our regular maintenance on all of our machines and that helps to prolong the life of our equipment. ”

On October 20, Bob Jordan, HOLT CAT General Construction Sales Representative, delivered a brand new Cat Skid Steer Loader to TXI and Jimmy and his crew were excited to see what kind of features were added since they bought the 216A. The old machine is

going to be sent to Beaumont where it will be used in a less extreme environment.

TXI is one of the largest producers of cement in Texas and California. TXI is also one of the major suppliers of stone, sand, gravel and expanded shale and clay products and one of the larges producers of baggage cement and concrete in the Southwest. The Hunter, Texas cement plant was built in 1980 and has 130 employees.

CAT®216ASkIDSTEERLOADER:9,100 Total Machine HoursAfter 8 Years and

Mike Dye, Project Manager for T & D Construction, which is located in Dallas, Texas has been a HOLT CAT customer for the past three years. As an excavation company owner/operator, Mike knows what it means to watch his overhead costs such as rising fuel prices. He also knows what it means if one of his machines breaks down.

When Mike purchases Cat® machines from HOLT CAT, he does not hesitate to spend the extra money for additional features such as air- conditioning, quick coupler and “I operate the equipment all day and I need to be comfortable and safe,” said Mike. With an air-conditioned cab, Mike does not breath in as much dust, while a quick coupler allows him to quickly and safely change work tools. He also knows that when he buys machines from HOLT CAT he can rely on HOLT for parts, service and rentals. He owns a Cat 305 CR Mini-Hydraulic Excavator, a Cat 287 B Multi-Terrain Loader, a Cat 314 C LCRX Excavator and a Challenger MT525 B Ag tractor. He also rents CAT 320 Excavators and 953 Track Loaders.

“I rent and buy quite a few Caterpillar

machines and work tools and I can always rely on HOLT CAT’s Dallas store employees to work together as a team to ensure everything goes smoothly,” said Mike. If something goes wrong with my machine, Ben Davidson, HOLT CAT’s General Construction Sales Manager along with Chris Howell, General Construction Sales Rep, Mark Witt, HOLT Rental Services Sales Rep and Jeff McNeil, Lead Service Technician tell me the truth and always work something out so that I do not have a lot of downtime and that is priceless,” said Mike.

HOLT Field Service Technicians are responsive and the store employees always call me and let me know what the status is on my machine. ”I trust them and know that they will take care of my equipment, which allows me to focus on the job,” said Mike. He adds that HOLT CAT meets or exceeds his expectations and that they treat him like one of their bigger customers. “I used to buy my equipment from another dealer but I never received the customer service from them as I do from HOLT,” said Mike. If something goes wrong, Mike knows that his Sales Rep Chris

will ask him what needs to be done and how he can help to make things right. Mike also notes that Chris follows up and never fails to call him back. “All of the employees at HOLT go to great length to assist their customers. They are as much concerned about my success as I am about theirs and that is the kind of bond we have,” said Mike. And you just cannot put a price on that kind of service.

Mike considers himself a loyal Caterpillar customer and says,” Bobcat has tried to get my business but I have told them that I buy and will continue to buy Caterpillar.” Mike emphasizes that Caterpillar builds quality machines and when the engineers design these machines they design them with the operators in mind. He used to operate many different brands of equipment but feels that Caterpillar’s joystick controls are easy to use, while others brands seem backwards to him. In addition, Mike believes that Caterpillar machines are better than other brands because they have adequate power, compression and are more durable. The 287B Multi-Terrain Loader has an anti-stall device; a feature does not exist on other brands and Caterpillar’s

excavator buckets have greater capacity, which reduces the cycle times significantly. “With a Cat machine I do not have to concentrate on how to operate the machine but instead I can concentrate on what I am doing like grading,” said Mike.

“HOLT CAT is the best in the industry when it comes to quality and service,” said Mike. “I always recommend them to my friends. “ When Mike began renting from HOLT, he felt that they were genuinely concerned about their customers. When he decided to purchase a machine he recognized that what set HOLT apart from the competition was their execution and follow through.

Mike is currently building a basement and doing some site work in Collin county and as he is looking to expand his business in the future. HOLT CAT appreciates Mike’s business and

will be there to assist him with his Caterpillar machine needs.

CATRentalStore Business Tip:

Equipment Selection - The Basics

It’s important to rent the right equipment for the job.

The staff at HOLT Rental Services should be able to help determine the best solutions for your current needs, but there are several factors to note before you head to the rental yard.

Consider the underfoot conditions at the work site. A piece of machinery operating on smooth concrete or asphalt may have different requirements than one working on four inches of loose gravel. Tracked machines perform best on soft or wet ground and tread lightly over sensitive surfaces like tree roots or new sod. Some situations may require flotation tires, or for especially harsh environments, solid tires.

Consider travel distances. If a machine must travel extensively between points on the jobsite, features like ride control help make your operator more comfortable and also maximize load retention while traversing rough terrain.

The steepness of grades on a jobsite can factor into equipment choice as well. Tracked machines are often better able to handle hilly sites than their wheeled counterparts because they have the most surface area in contact with the ground.

Know the dimensions of the machine you need. Does it have to fit through the narrow opening of a yard gate? Will it need to work next to a retaining wall or a lane

of traffic? Operators can work confidently next to buildings or walls in compact radius hydraulic excavators because the machine’s upper frame does not extend beyond its tracks when it swings.

Lift capacity is another important factor. In general, choose the smallest machine that will get the job done. But don’t cut yourself short on size and power. If the machine lacks ample power for job requirements, it may take longer to complete the work.

Consider the use of attachments at the jobsite. These tools help crews complete multiple tasks with one machine, eliminating the need to rent and transport additional dedicated-task machines. A wide variety of machine-matched work tools are available

from equipment manufacturers like Caterpillar®. Look for quick couplers that allow the operator to change tools, often without leaving the cab. Machines with high-flow hydraulics maximize the power of certain work tools like augers and planers. If a job requires extensive use of such tools, renting a high-flow machine may be the best solution. The intended payload will help determine bucket selection. High-capacity light material buckets are best for loosely packed loads of wood chips or topsoil, while heavy-duty industrial grapple buckets are better equipped to accommodate irregularly shaped scrap materials.

Whatever your need turns out to be, don’t hesitate to call HOLT Rental Services.

AwardforSixthTime

TruckEngineEarnsJ.D.PowerandAssociatesFor an unprecedented sixth time, a heavy-

duty truck engine from Caterpillar Inc. has received a prestigious award for customer satisfaction in the 2006 Heavy Duty Truck Engine and Transmission Customer Satisfaction Survey.

International marketing information firm J.D. Power and Associates awarded Caterpillar’s C-12 clean power engine its highest levels of customer satisfaction, saying that Caterpillar in particular has done an excellent job in meeting the challenge of the new emission standards by creating its own innovative emission technology and that their success is clearly evident in how satisfied customers are with their engines.

Caterpillar’s C-12 engine won the award

in the “Vocational” category, which includes trucks used in demanding applications such as construction, refuse hauling and utility services. This year’s study was based on interviews with 2,529 customers who own two-year-old Class 8 trucks (weighing 33,000 pounds or more). It measures customer satisfaction in four areas of engine performance: engine quality, engine performance, engine cost of ownership and engine warranty.

“The credibility of the J.D. Power and Associates Award is that it is customer-driven, reflecting the feedback and voices of the end-users who rely on Caterpillar’s engines,” says Jim Parker, Caterpillar vice president with responsibility for the company’s

Power Systems Marketing Division. “Team Caterpillar’s ongoing focus is on delivering enhanced customer value while at the same time meeting the more stringent EPA emissions standards. We are pleased that customers are experiencing the value of this tireless work.”

The C-12 utilizes the building blocks of Caterpillar ACERT™ Technology, which is a long-term solution that reduces emissions at the point of combustion without sacrificing engine performance and reliability. A systems approach to emissions reduction, it relies on advanced technologies in four key areas: improved air management, precision combustion technology, advanced engine electronics and a simple after-treatment

process. “This is an exciting time for Caterpillar

as we continue to see strong customer acceptance for our engines powered by ACERT Technology,” says Parker. “ACERT Technology remains the solution for future engines. We currently have 100 engines meeting the even tougher 2007 emission regulations in customer hands today. Caterpillar’s extensive and industry-leading testing will achieve more than 12 million miles in 2006.”

The Caterpillar C-15 follows the C-12 in the rankings with strong scores across all customer satisfaction factors. The study examined engines in 2004 model year trucks, the second model year impacted by EPA emissions standards enacted in 2002. Caterpillar has

submitted certification documents for all 2007-compliant engines and is fully prepared to begin production. Caterpillar is the leading manufacturer and supplier of truck and bus engines in the combined medium and heavy-duty categories in North America, holding the leading position in engine shipments to vehicle manufacturers since 1999.

HOLT CAT Engine Division welcomes the opportunity to talk with you about the benefits of Cat’s ACERT technology. For more information contact your Power Systems sales representative.

Cooperation between HOLT CAT® and other Caterpillar dealers to ensure mutually beneficial outcomes, even in some unusual situations, is a high priority Here is a case in point.

Some detailed detective work using the latest in satellite tracking technology and close cooperation among HOLT CAT®, Caterpillar, Inc., and MAQSA, a CAT® dealer in Mexico, has resulted in the recovery of a generator set that was stolen from a HOLT CAT facility in the Rio Grande Valley.

The unit, an XQ230 (230 kW) trailer-mounted generator set, was taken out of the yard at the Edinburg, TX store on the night of Oct. 16. The thieves cut through the fence to remove the unit, which has a value over $60,000. Stealing the unit not only removes it from inventory, but also makes it unavailable to customers who may have a real need.

In managing a HOLT Rental Power fleet of some 200 units, Rental Manager Tom Barry periodically checks the Global Positioning System (GPS) readings from trackers that are installed on the generators so he will know where the units are. He noticed that the location of one unit, an XQ230, was listed as “Not applicable.” Using the GPS system website and its Google® Earth interface, he found the unit in the city of Torreon in north central Mexico, some 300 miles from where it was stolen. The flags went up as Tom knew there were no HOLT generators rented to customers in Mexico.

After verifying that the unit was missing, Tom called Scott Heppner at CAT Rental Power at Caterpillar, Inc., and got the name of the CAT product support rep for Northern Mexico, Tim Hubbard. Tim contacted the CAT dealer closest to the unit for local assistance. This happened to be MAQSA CAT in Torreon. Two MAQSA employees, Carlos Amaya and Alex Zanella, went to the location in Terreon shown by the GPS system and found the unit at a truck stop.

Not knowing they were being tracked, the thieves had moved the unit to the truck stop in preparation for another move. Alex Zanella then called the police. The unit was seized and Carlos and Alex moved it to the

yard at the MAQSA facility in Torreon.

The happy ending was that MAQSA purchased the unit, and it will remain in Mexico.

“This was a very dynamic situation,” Tom said. “We suspected the thieves were moving the unit deeper into Mexico, and we were fortunate that they had not disconnected the GPS system. We knew exactly where they were and were able to direct the police to the exact location.”

Bob Stratton, Vice President of the Power Systems Division noted that the recovery of this unit exemplifies the HOLT Core Values of Ethical – by doing the right thing; and Commitment – by demonstrating a caring attitude. “This was truly a mutually beneficial outcome for everyone involved,” he said.

“Without the high level of cooperation of many people and especially MAQSA and the local police, as well as the GPS system, we might have never recovered this unit,” Bob said.

MAQSA CAT employees Carlos Amaya, left, and Alex Zanella assisted in the recovery of this stolen XQ230 unit in Torreon, Mexico.

intheInformationAgeYour manager asks for an update on a project

that he e-mailed to you several weeks ago. To your horror, you have forgotten about it. Worse yet, now you have to scroll through page after page of e-mails to find the one containing the valuable information. After doing this with no success, you become brutally aware that the crucial information you are searching for is imbedded in an e-mail with nothing in the subject line.

If this scenario sounds familiar, then you are like most of us with hundreds of e-mails in our inboxes that are too important to delete yet impossible to locate when needed. Here are some very simple steps that can help you take control of your inbox, increase productivity and reduce the stress of your daily work life.

1. youMuSTstopstoringe-mailsinyourinbox.

This may be a hard habit for many of us to break but doing so will make your life much easier. It doesn’t have to be

as scary as it sounds. There is a simple way to convert your e-mails to your network provider task list. Simply select the information contained in the e-mail and drag it over to the task icon. It’s that simple. A task will automatically be created and the new task will appear waiting for you to simply assign it a name. No more searching through e-mails with no subject lines or replied emails where the subject line is no longer accurate. You will now have everything in a prioritized, organized location.

2. Maketwotasklists. It sounds simple enough and surely

not the first time you’ve heard it. But we often forget the simple things that can make life easier. A daily task list and a long term task list will keep the higher priority tasks at the forefront and thus get more attention and keep

lower priority tasks in the foreground as to not overwhelm you with a lengthy task list.

3. Breaktasksdownintosmallerprojects. Larger projects on your long term

task list should be broken down into smaller daily tasks. Some tasks can be as small as “Call Susan on Tuesday and request the report.” This allows you to chip away at the larger project in a manageable but consistent manner. Doing a small task every day will ensure continued progress on tackling the overall project.

4. Whatwillkeepmeawaketonight? Start every work morning by asking

yourself one question, “What task, if left uncompleted, will keep me awake tonight?” This will keep you focused on getting the high priority tasks completed first.

Product LinkNew hardware and an all-new architecture for Product

Link is available at HOLT CAT. Product Link is a management tool that allows customers to collect and track multiple types of information about their equipment — from machine location and service meter hours to health and productivity information. Product Link gathers data from a machine’s on-board systems and transmits it wirelessly to Caterpillar’s network operations center. Information is then delivered to a customer’s desktop through HOLT CAT’s Storefront via Caterpillar’s online application, Cat® EquipmentManager.

With fast, easy access to machine information, earthmoving equipment owners can optimize asset utilization, reduce security risks, improve maintenance management and implement before-failure repair strategies. The result is more uptime, lower operating costs and a higher overall return on the equipment investment.

The new Product Link architecture features a modular

design that includes a satellite communicator (PL121SR) and a separate electronic control module (PL300 ECM). Equipment owners who require basic machine management information, such as machine operating hours and location, can utilize a stand-alone PL121SR. Those who want access to additional machine health and productivity information need both components, which are available as a complete package as PL321SR. Whatever the choice, both Product Link models have been designed to work in the world’s harshest environments with the same ruggedness and durability for which Caterpillar is known.

The combination of new architecture and satellite communications technology allows the latest Cat Product Link system to set a new standard for performance, flexibility and value. AccuGrade®

AccuGrade Cross Slope is a grade control system designed to control surface profile with high accuracy. This system uses machine-mounted sensors and electronics to report guidance information to the operator via an in-cab display. The results are a consistent and accurate road cross-section. Most importantly, consistent roads are safer roads.

This system makes automatic adjustments to the left or right lift cylinder, typically performed by the operator. AccuGrade Cross Slope delivers all the information the operator needs to quickly and easily spread or cut material at the correct cross slope to the in-cab display. The operator can select which side of the blade to control automatically and swap direction on the return pass without readjusting the settings. Elevation is controlled manually by matching grade, or automatically by adding an elevation control device.

Cross Slope System. The basic cross slope system automatically controls the slope of the blade to maintain desired surface cross slope.
