Abstract:
Crowd funding in the hospitality industry can be used as an alternative way of financing a company in
order to collect the amount of funds from the crowd which is needed to realize the project. From an
academic point of view there is little written about crowd funding in the hospitality industry. This
paper will review to the extant literature of crowd funding in its entirety, where crowd funding and
crowd sourcing are the main topics. The main goal of this paper is to indentify ‘‘why an entrepreneur
should choose for this alternative way of financing?''. Based up on the findings, from financial
experts; crowd funders; estate agency, where via in-dept interviews information is collected, in order
to make the discussion of the following topics. Crowd funding in the hospitality industry; legal
aspects; the relation between crowd funding and crowd sourcing; the pro's and con's for so well
entrepreneurs as the investors and the development of crowd funding. In either case, we assume
that crowd funded companies become part of a community, from the surrounding or with the same
interest. Whit this in mind crowd funding has many benefits for a beginning company for their PR,
and customers/guests.

Chapter 1
1.1 The Introduction
Everyone should have the opportunity to raise money to realize their own dream project. Therefore
crowd funding has been invented.
The basic idea of crowd funding is to raise external finance from a large audience (the “crowd”),
where each individual provides a very small amount of money, instead of soliciting a small group of
sophisticated investors (Belleflamme, Lambert, & Schwienbacher, 2011). Crowd funding provides a
new opportunity for entrepreneurs to launch ventures without having to rely on traditional funding
mechanisms, such as banks and angel investing (Hui, Greenberg, & Gerber, 2014).
An entrepreneur who wants to start a new project but doesn’t have enough start capital can start his
project by the use of crowd funding. To acquire this capital the entrepreneur provides the project to
a platform on the internet and indicates the amount of money which is needed to realize the project.
Through this platform everyone (the crowd) can invest in the project. The idea is that many
individuals invest a small amount of money and these small investments will fund together the whole
project. These investors are called the crowd.
Research will be done by focusing on different aspects related to crowd funding in the hospitality
industry, the rights and obligations of the crowd by investing in the project (legal aspects), and if
there is a relation between crowd funding and crowd sourcing. The literature review is based on
crowd funding in general, later in this study it will be related to the hospitality industry. Researching
these topics will be done by analyzing hospitality companies which are funded by crowd funding. In
addition, companies who could have something to do with crowd funding such as banks, estate-
agent specialized in the hospitality industry will be analyzed as well. And at least the research will
focus on the crowd that has invested in a project.
Based on our observations of the researched literature and in conversations with several hospitality
entrepreneurs there can be concluded that crowd funding is becoming increasingly popular. Crowd
funding is definitely a new trend which is not well known at the moment in the hospitality industry.
Research about crowd funding has to be done in order to get the entrepreneurs more up to date and
to inform them how this new financing method works in the hospitality industry. This method of
financing may actually apply for us as young entrepreneurs in the future.

1.2 Literature Review
In the previous years, research has been done regarding to the new phenomenon of “crowd funding”
and “crowd sourcing” by (Howe, 2008; Brabham, 2008; Lessmann & Voß, 2008; Schweinbacher &
Larraide, 2011). However, these studies have combined crowd funding and crowd sourcing but not in
relation to the hospitality branch. In this literature review its shown what other researchers found
about the new phenomenon “crowd funding” and “crowd sourcing” and their relation.
Crowd sourcing
Before crowd funding can be discussed, it is important to understand that the concept of crowd
funding finds its roots in the broader concept of crowd sourcing; which forms the basis of crowd
funding (van Wingerden & Ryan, 2011).
Crowd sourcing refers to use the crowd to obtain ideas, feedback, and solutions in order to develop
corporate activities (Howe, 2008). The term crowd sourcing is invented by Howe & Robinson in 2006.
They define crowd sourcing as follows: “Crowd sourcing represents it to an undefined (and generally
large) network of people in the form of an open call. This can take the form of peer-production
(when the job is performed collaboratively), but is also often undertaken by sole individuals. The
crucial prerequisite is the use of the open call format and the large network of potential laborers
(Howe & Robinson, 2006).”
But the term crowd sourcing has evolved during the years and made Lessman & Vob (2008) redefine
the term crowd sourcing. They define crowd sourcing as an interactive form of service provision,
which is collaborative or competitive- orientated organized and involves a large group of extrinsic or
intrinsic motivated actors with different knowledge levels under application of modern information
and communication system on the basis of web 2.0. They noticed that objects are products and
services of different innovation levels, which are developed due to the fact of participants who have
reactive or proactive behavior (Lessmann & Voß, 2008).
Latest research from (Schweinbacher & Larraide, 2011) formulate; crowd sourcing as a method that
enables a firm to outsource specific tasks essential for the making of sale of its products to the
general public (the crowd) with the aid of an open call over the internet. Consumers and volunteers
are able to contribute to production processes and create value for the firm.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
6
(Brabham, 2008) Noticed that crowd sourcing can differ in many ways from the open-source
practices. A divergence can be noticed that an open source case the idea belongs to the community
or the “crowd” who can exploit it on an individual basis, because there is no regulation on who may
or can use it. This differs in the case of crowd sourcing, because the generated idea belongs to the
company who will be the only to exploit and develop it.
Crowd sourcing can bring several benefits for the firms according to (Schweinbacher & Larraide,
2011). Crowd sourcing can reduce and save costs, but as well the crowd may provide more insights
faster than a small team of employees within the firm. This can reduce the length of new product
development. Crowd sourcing can be a good marketing tool since involving a committed crowd is
likely to result in better customer acceptance, and leads to more awareness.
Crowd sourcing and crowd funding
(Larralde & Schwienbacher, 2012) Mention different business models for crowd funding namely
donations, and passive and active investments by the crowd. There can be noticed that active crowd
funders differ in many ways with passive crowd funders, because active crowd funders are not only
supplying money but are as well crowd sources. They are helping in designing, testing products,
suggesting path for the company and supplying their network scope and individual expertise this
results in many benefits for the firm. (Lehner, 2013) Noticed that this active form of crowd funding is
also very fruitful in providing means for corporate communications and public relations and through
the dispersed positive discourse, it ultimately improves a company’s legitimacy.
Crowd funding
According to (Burgstra, 2012) crowd funding, or funding through the crowd responds to the needs of
the public financial support to people or projects in which they believe. Interested people are
investing a small amount; all those small amounts constitute the capital which is required for a
particular project. While crowd funding cannot make all the cuts, it offers an interesting method to
fund projects. Crowd funding not only creates opportunities for full-time working professionals. Also
passionate amateurs could work successful with crowd funding (Larralde & Schwienbacher, 2012).

Why should entrepreneurs start with crowd funding?
Nowadays it is difficult to meet the initial capital for setting up a new project (Larralde &
Schwienbacher, 2012). An important reason to start crowd funding is the ability to generate a project
with additional income. Collecting through crowd funding is not just money. The entrepreneur builds
a close relationship with the public who believe in the project and also want to help to make it a
success. An equally important consideration to start crowd funding is the contact which is needed to
enter into a large group of potential donors or funders (Hui, Greenberg, & Gerber, 2014).
Crowd funding also allows entrepreneurs to find and retain customers to the project at limited cost.
Through crowd funding the entrepreneur can extend to involve the public in the development of the
project product. This offers the entrepreneur not only an effective way to do marketing, but the
public will understand the project or product better and build an emotional connection with it. The
big advantage is that the entrepreneur can convey much better the artistic value (Larralde &
Schwienbacher, 2012).
Additionally, entrepreneurs can also build a piece of “legitimacy” with crowd funding in the direction
of grant providers and funds. Because they can demonstrate that there is a need for the project or
product. It is not inconceivable that the condition in the future to the award of grants or funds is
linked to a certain amount (Burgstra, 2012).
There are a number of different ways in which the public can support the project. Incentive based
crowd funding (rewards), Debt crowd funding with a financial return (interest and/or redemption),
equity based crowd funding (eg. shares) (Burgstra, 2012).
Incentive based crowd funding (rewards) could be compared with donations and sponsorship,
whereby the public will receive in exchange for financial support a reward back. In some cases, there
is an opportunity to acquire a small financial contribution, but it is usually so small that it is not the
primary purpose of donors (Burgstra, 2012).
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
8
In debt crowd funding with a financial return (interest and/or redemption) is a form of crowd funding
which provides the public money in the form of a loan at a predetermined percentage rate. There is
no mention of an ownership interest or any influence on policy. An example is a Dutch Platform
Money for Each Other, founded by two former ING bankers, working through this way. In this way of
crowd funding entrepreneurs need to pay an interest to the public that wants to support the project.
This way of crowd funding is therefore particularly interesting for companies and projects that have
only one purpose, namely to make money. For organizations such as charities is this form of crowd
funding not immediately obvious (Larralde & Schwienbacher, 2012).
With in Equity based crowd funding people can see the audience more as an investor, which in
exchange for its financial contribution regains a direct or indirect remuneration. In return for the
invested amount one gets to a ratio a part of the ownership rights of the project or the organization
back for example through a shareholding. This shareholding participation would be sold in an agreed
period and after that agreed period the accrued value will be received (Burgstra, 2012).
There can be conclude that crowd funding and crowd sourcing are still in their development phase,
and that crowd sourcing is directly related to crowd finds its roots in the broader concept of crowd
sourcing; which forms the basis of crowd funding (van Wingerden & Ryan, 2011)

1.3 Conceptual Model
The conceptual model represents and helps to understand the topics “crowd funding” and “crowd
sourcing”. In addition to that it is visualizing the key concepts and the relationships between them.
The conceptual model starts with the entrepreneurs/firms/companies that are searching for an
alternative way of financing, this can be done by crowd funding, but there are also companies who
want to obtain ideas or want to have feedback and solutions. Not from their employees but from the
crowd in order to reduce costs but as well to support, this leads to more brand recognition. From this
stage there can be conclude that crowd funding is related to monetary the company and crowd
sourcing to improving the company by advise of the crowd. Crowd funding can be split into passive
CF and active CF. Passive CF has a limited connection with the crowd in comparison to the active CF
which is a combined version of crowd sourcing and crowd funding. For both methods the crowd is
needed which is mostly located at open platforms such as social media and websites who are
especially created for crowd funding and crowd sourcing. From this last step there will be a link back
again to the first step which are the entrepreneurs because they need the crowd in order to support.

Chapter 2 the Methodology
2.1 Research design
Since crowd funding in the hospitality industry is still in its infancy, the grounded theory was chosen
as the methodology for this research study. This study was for the first time introduced by (Glaser &
Strauss, 1967). In this study a qualitative research method will be used by focusing on different
aspects related to crowd funding in the hospitality industry, the legal aspects of the crowd by
investing in the project, and if there is a relation between crowd funding and crowd sourcing. The
literature review is based on crowd funding in general, later in this study the scope will be on the
hospitality industry. Researching these topics will be done by analyzing hospitality companies which
are funded by crowd funding, the crowd who have invested in a project and companies who could
have something to do with crowd funding such as bank or a real estate-agent in the hospitality
industry.
Grounded theory is a specific methodology developed by Glaser and Strauss for the purpose of
building theory from data (Corbin & Strauss, 2008). Grounded theory is one of the most popular
qualitative research designs. Not only are there thousands of publications that report on studies
using grounded theory methods, but there is also a collection of seminal texts that researchers can
use to guide their study and ensure the rigor of their work. (Birks & Mills, 2011) The goal of the
grounded theory approach is to generate a theory that explains how an aspect of the social world
works. The goal is to develop a theory that emerges from and is therefore connected to the very
reality that the theory is developed to explain (Ke & Wenglensky, 2010). “The grounded theory
approach is a qualitative research method that uses a systematic set of procedures to develop an
inductively derived grounded theory about a phenomenon” (Corbin & Strauss, 2008).

12
2.2 Sample
Even if it were possible, it is not necessary to collect data from everyone in a community in order to
get valid findings. In qualitative research, only a sample (that is, a subset) of a population is selected
for any given study. Three of the most common sampling methods used in qualitative research are
purposive sampling, quota sampling, and snowball sampling. The snowball sampling will be used in
this study. In this method, participants or informants with who contact has already been made use
their social networks to refer the researcher to other people who could potentially participate in or
contribute to the study. Snowball sampling is often used to find and recruit “hidden populations”
that is, groups not easily accessible to researcher through other sampling strategies (Mack,
Woodsong, Marcqueen, Guest, & Namey, 2011).
In this study crowd funding is represented from different perspectives therefore the researchers
decided to make use of different target groups such as; companies which are composed by crowd
funding, companies which could have something to do with crowd funding such as banks and/or
estate-agent which are specialized in the hospitality industry and the crowd who have invested in a
project. The characteristics from the target group such as age, gender and nationality will be clear
after interviewing the different target groups. The characteristics will be added to the sample after
interviewing the different target groups.

13
2.3 Instrument
Qualitative research will be used for this study. Qualitative research is a type of scientific research. In
general terms, scientific research consists of an investigation that seeks to answers to a question,
systematically uses a predefined set of procedures to answer the question, collects evidence, and
produces findings that were not determined in advance and produces findings that are applicable
beyond the immediate boundaries of the study (Mack, Woodsong, Marcqueen, Guest, & Namey,
2011).
An in-depth interview is one of the three most common qualitative methods which will be applied in
this study. In-depth interviews are optimal for collecting data on individual personal histories,
perspectives, and experiences, particularly when sensitive topics are being explored (Mack,
Woodsong, Marcqueen, Guest, & Namey, 2011).
In-depth interviews are useful because detailed information will be collected about a person’s
thoughts and behaviors or want to explore new issues in depth. Interviews are often used to provide
context to other data (such as outcome data), offering a more complete picture of what happened in
the program and why.
The primary advantage of in-depth interviews is that they provide much more detailed information
than what is available through other data collection methods, such as surveys. They also may provide
a more relaxed atmosphere in which to collect information. People may feel more comfortable
having a conversation with someone about their program as opposed to filling out a survey (Boyce &
Neale, 2006).
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
14
2.4 Procedure
Each company (entrepreneur) gets interviewed related to the type of business. However, the same
information is collected from each interview with the different companies. Through interviewing
different companies is gathered more and more information about the same topic that can be
adjusted together.
An interview protocol will be developed. The interview protocol includes the instructions that need
to be followed for each interview which ensure the consistency between interviews, and thus
increase the reliability of the findings. The instructions that needs to be followed for each interview
are; What to say to interviewees when setting up the interview; What to say to interviewees when
beginning the interview; What to say to interviewees in concluding the interview; What to do during
the interview (take notes, audiotape); What to do following the interview (fill notes, check audiotape
for clarity, summarize key information, submit written findings). Be sure to explain the purpose of
the interview, why the stakeholder has been chosen, and the expected duration of the interview,
whether and how the information will be kept confidential, and the use of a note taker and/or tape
recorder (Boyce & Neale, 2006).
There will be no more than 15 open-ended and factual questions formulated. The following probes
could be used in the interviews; Would you give me an example?; Can you elaborate on that idea?;
Would you explain that further?; I'm not sure I understand what you're saying.; Is there anything
else? (Boyce & Neale, 2006).
After all interviews were conducted, the results will be compared with each other. The data are
transcribed and reviewed. All interview data will be analyzed through reading the interview
responses and look for patterns or themes among the participants, if there is a variety of themes, see
if there is a possibility to group them in any meaningful way, such as by type of participant. Maybe
younger participants tend to think and feel differently from older ones or that men and woman
respond differently. Identify the responses that seem to have been given with enthusiasm, as
opposed to those that the participants answered in only a few words. Disseminate the findings of the
various interviews in an evaluation report. The evaluation report consists of 5 different steps; 1.
Introduction and Justification; 2. Methodology; 3. Results; 4. Conclusion and Recommendations; 5.
Appendices.
In addition to that data will be displayed in tables, boxes and figures to make it easier to read (Boyce
& Neale, 2006).
To conclude, an email can be sent to the stakeholder as an aftercare to express thanks for the
cooperation.

2.5 Explanation research questions
All interviews are based on crowd funding within the hospitality industry. The goal of these
interviews are to find out how crowd funding works within the hospitality industry. Below is shown
why these different questions are asked in the interview.
1. What was the first time that you came in contact with crowd funding? And to which extend
were you at that time aware of crowd funding?
This question is asked to find out when each interviewee came in contact with crowd funding
and how they were informed about crowd funding so far. This allows the interviewers to
compare the experts with each other from the beginning of their crowd funding business.
2. How does crowd funding works according to the experts in the hospitality industry?
With this question the interviewers will know how various experts think about the working
process of crowd funding within the hospitality industry. Crowd funding is still in the
development phase it provides different point of views from the experts on how it actually
works.
3. Which benefits do the experts recognize in crowd funding compared to other financing
methods? The purpose of this question is to figure out the many different benefits from this
financing method. This question indicates why crowd funding need to be chosen as the new
financing method.
4. Which disadvantages do the experts recognize in crowd funding compared to other
financing methods?
The purpose of this question is to figure out the different disadvantages from this financing
method. This question indicates why people not should choose for crowd funding as the new
financing method.
5. In which way is a connection between crowd funding and crowd sourcing?
This question provides the interviewers the information if there is a relation between crowd
funding and crowd sourcing, and next to that it indicates how crowd funding and crowd
sourcing can be combined.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
16
6. Did the interviewee already invest in a crowd funding project? Yes, why in crowd funding?
No, Why not?
This question gives the interviewee the information about why someone may or may not
invest in a crowd funding project. And what is stopping them to invest and what stimulates
them to invest.
7. What are the advantages and disadvantages for both the entrepreneur and the investor of
a crowd funding project?
This question indicates the advantages and disadvantages for both entrepreneur and the
investor. It may be noted why you should invest in a crowd funding project or not.
8. Why should crowd funding be the new financing method for entrepreneurs?
This question gives the interviewers the information about how optimistic the experts are
about crowd funding. Do they really support it or do they see it only as a trend at this
moment.
9. How do the experts think that crowd funding will develop in the future?
This question indicates the future and the developing of crowd funding. Will it grow or not
and how.
10. To what extend has a crowd funded company to deal with the investors?
This question indicates the relationship between the crowds funded company and the
investor. And how the crowd funded company has to deal with the investors.
11. In which way do the experts think that crowd funding will influences other financing
methods and next to that, that it will be the main competitor from the bank?
This question gives the interviewers the information about how serious crowd funding is and
the expected growth of this financing method in contrast to other financing methods.
12. How do the experts think about the legal and tax aspects of crowd funding? Should they be
tightened up in the future or not?
This question indicates how the legal aspects and tax aspects are organized within crowd
funding in the Netherlands. And on witch point there can be compared with regards to the
other financing methods.

2.6 Procedure planning
A Gantt-chart is created to get an overview on the working process of the project. The different
tasks, week numbers, starting dates per task and the end dates (deadlines) per task are mentioned.
The blue lines are showing the forecasted time that we want to spend on a specific task. This Gantt-
chart is a planning which shows which tasks needs to be done at what time in order to finalize all the
tasks on time for the final deadline.

Budget plan
In order to see which expenses are needed for this research proposal a budget plan has been
created. For this research proposal the following expenses are required to compose the research.
Office cost, employee cost and other cost. This research requires software tools in order to make a
proper research. For this proposal the researchers make use of Microsoft office such as word and
excel in order to formulate the research. The costs for the software are not in the budget because it
is already purchased and installed on the computer.
Public transport will be the transportation to and from interview appointments. During the weekdays
the transportation will be free of costs because, the student week OV. During the weekend the ticket
price will be deducted by 40%. The public transport costs are estimated at € 40, - because of the
reduction during the weekend. The print costs are based on the printing costs of Stenden University
and the phone costs are based on the price of Vodafone & KPN. The labour costs are based on the
minimum income of a twenty two year old person provided by (Rijksoverheid, 2014).
Budget plan:
Office costs Amount times Price Sum Total
Draft version 1 10 X € 0.05 = € 0.50
Draft version 2 10 X €0.05 = € 0.50
Proposal 20 X €0.05 = € 1.00
Re-sit proposal 20 X €0.05 = € 1.00

Chapter 3 Results
In this paragraph a description is drawn from the findings of the in-depth interviews. The in-depth
interviews were conducted with professionals from the field. The purpose of these in-depth
interviews was to collect as much as possible consisted and new information from different
professionals of the field about crowd funds and crowd sourcing in the hospitality industry.
Different quotes are collected from the experts of the field. (de Grefte, 2014) Mentioned that “The
best way to pay back the crowd is to repay in kind”. Another crowd funding quote from the
interviews is that “Crowd funding can been seen as a gap in the market, because banks are with their
back to the wall” (Gehrels, 2014). (Rooseboom, 2014) Noticed that “If you understand how to
mobilize the crowd, the crowd will be yours”.
Crowd sourcing and crowd funding
Crowd sourcing can be seen as a community (Gehrels, 2014). There is a connection between
investors and the crowd which result in a growth of the customer data base. With use of the
customer data base input of others will result faster in results and makes the company structure
optimal (de Grefte, 2014). (Baljeu, 2014) noticed that the investors also mentioned as the crowd can
depends from each other in crowd sourcing, mostly the crowd from your own network who invested
in your company are passive crowd funders, the active crowd funders who give advice are mostly
bigger investors and people who not know you beforehand, they mostly invest a high amount of
money in your company en they want that you perform well, to help the entrepreneur the big
investors want to share their opinion but don't want to participate in the company. (de Grefte, 2014)
Mentioned that crowd sourcing can also work contradictory when people have different inputs, and
meanings and when they express many times their opinions how a company has to work or the
entrepreneur. Therefore is it important that the crowd is in line with the companies’ vision and has a
bit the same meaning as the entrepreneur when it comes to crowd sourcing together with crowd
funding.
Crowd funding
Crowd funding is seen by the interviewers as a financial method for (young) entrepreneurs who
wants to start a company, en therefore money needed. Banks have nowadays little inclined to trust
in the Hospitality entrepreneurs. But the entrepreneur needs money in order to launch their own
company (Gehrels, 2014).Banks is nowadays not invested in investments because they can't of the
strict rules of the European (Rooseboom, 2014). The Bank needs the money to increase their own
cash and therefore investments will be fast declined by the bank (Rooseboom, 2014).
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
20
Crowd funding is a good alternative way to collect the money (Gehrels, 2014).Crowd funding works
as follow, you collect money from the crowd, mostly in small parts. Different platforms offering
nowadays there service. At this moment there are around 35 platforms in the Netherlands and every
month new platforms are launched (Rooseboom, 2014). Crowd funding sounds sometimes easy but
it isn't. It's important to have solid business plan, which should meet many strict aspects from the
platform but as well to convince the crowd (Rooseboom, 2014).The platforms are checked by the
AFM if they have AFM certificate, they check the financial health of the platform, to give the
entrepreneur and the crowd more assurance (Rooseboom, 2014). The public cannot see in the
chamber of commerce if the company is arising out of crowd funding because this is not registered in
the Netherlands (Rooseboom, 2014)
(Baljeu, 2014) mentioned that crowd funding becomes more accessible and more familiar for so well
the crowd as the entrepreneurs but noticed as well that entrepreneurs in the hospitality industry has
still a lack of knowledge and many question marks about this phenomenal.
Crowd funding is growing every half year in the Netherlands, from the first two quarters in 2011
crowd funding amounted € 0.75 million. In the first 2 quarters of 2013 € 13 million was crowd funded
and the expectations for 2014 are around the €250 million (Rooseboom, 2014). (Gehrels &
Rozeboom, 2014) are saying crowd funding is booming business. The above results are as well the
reason that (Baljeu, 2014) says that real estate agencies also see this as an alternative way to advice
an entrepreneur when the banks don't provide the loan.
The legal aspects of crowd funding can described as followed: The entrepreneur or the company pay
8% interest rate to the crowd, this can be increased to 9% because many projects succeed via crowd
funding nowadays. The payment will be done via the platforms because sometimes it is not known
for the company or the entrepreneur who the investors are. Most of the time a payment is needed
to be published on the platform, this amount divers per platform, and a success fee can be asked
which is often around the 5% (de Grefte, 2014). (Baljeu, 2014)Mentioned that the legal form can
differs per company mostly they start with a one-man business. (Rooseboom, 2014) Noticed that the
invested crowd has no participation within the company from the legal aspects.
The platforms has from the government not any further strict rules but (Rooseboom, 2014)
mentioned that some platforms ask for a lean BKR of the entrepreneur. The earning model of a
crowd funding platform divers from each other, for example by Horeca crowd funding Nederland
they are also offering the financial support which is a separately from the crowd funding company
but with the same persons. These platforms do this in order to generate some extra revenue. But
other platforms choose to have 1% of the total amount which is crowd funded they focus mostly on
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
21
The massive crowd funding who accept 1% of 100 million to keep the business going (de Grefte,
2014). Another point in crowd funding is money laundering because, they get the money back via the
interest which is pay by the entrepreneur or the platform and therefore are still not strict rules or
high control to check if the money is not dirty (de Grefte, 2014).
Crowd funding compared to other financing methods
(Rooseboom, 2014) Mentioned that crowd funding is still is not well known among the general public
this is still a disadvantage of crowd funding in general. But a great advantage of crowd funding is
when the crowd invest in the company because they become ambassador of the company. In the
hospitality industry is it a great beneficial, when the investors come whit there family or friends to
show their pride, this is the reason that crowd funding results in loyalty and solidarity (de Grefte,
2014). The public relations around crowd funding is brilliant says (Rooseboom, 2014). Crowd funding
is as well beneficial for the crowd because the interest is higher than having the money on their bank
account (Rooseboom, 2014).
Crowd funding has some other disadvantages for entrepreneurs which is that the payback is higher
than by any other regular financing method (de Grefte, 2014). Another disadvantages is that only a
good plan comes on platforms mentioned (Rooseboom, 2014) this because the platforms only want
to have the best projects because to decrease any risk that there name can be damaged by a not
successful project. Another negative point of crowd funding is when the project not succeed is that
crowd it directly will know that it was not successful and that they not quickly invest again in one of
your new projects (de Grefte, 2014).
The beer brewery companies (Heineken) which has the most classic financing method in the
Netherlands see crowd funding not as a competitor this because they don't mind if they don't play to
role anymore as a bank as long it will not influences there beer sales (de Grefte, 2014).
Crowd funding for entrepreneurs
(Rooseboom, 2014) Mentioned as first that the most important thing for an entrepreneur is that he
knows how to mobilize the crowd. It's important to have a project where people are interested in
and what they like, this are then mostly innovative projects. (de Grefte, 2014) says that the
advantages for entrepreneurs is within crowd funding that they are directly bounding between the
entrepreneur and the investors, and at the same time the entrepreneur is doing a major PR
campaign before opening his company or launching their product. If companies get money from the
bank they don't have this benefit and can open silently.
The payback to the investors can be done differently mostly is via the interest rate but this can also
be done in kind in small projects. (de Grefte, 2014) Says that in kind not always feels less expensive.
For example the entrepreneur can provide the product or in the hospitality branch a dinner voucher.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
22
Other ideas for in kind are in the hospitality an own chair, name on the wall, their own coat rack,
mostly something which is more beneficial than money and makes the connection between the
company and the investors.
(de Grefte, 2014) Compares the business culture from the Netherlands with America where failing a
company is less effacing than in Netherlands. He expects that this will change because when
entrepreneurs now get fait they maybe will not try it again. Crowd funding gives the benefit that
bigger risk are more allowed than other financing methods. But when it financial difficult is than is it
smart to inform the investors and show why the reason is of the bad performance, this shows
responsibility and that the entrepreneurs works on it. This helps as well that people will trust you for
the next time in another project.
There are also websites like Sybit says (Baljeu, 2014) where own equity can be requested but this
results in that people can participate in your own company , which is a different way of crowd
funding. The benefit of this is that they have a lot of contacts, and knowledge in the field and they
work in a broad network which can have many benefits for a starting company. In this stage of crowd
funding are the average amount of money which an entrepreneur ask is still not high mostly is it for a
restaurant and not for a huge hotel. The biggest investments are still not on the platforms the
hospitality but mostly are restaurants and bars (Baljeu, 2014). The pressure for entrepreneurs are
high within crowd funding this is because the project has to be invested before a certain time. It's
important to be quick and powerful (Baljeu, 2014). (Rooseboom, 2014) Mentioned that it's important
to have already a start capital from investors or family and friend on the website in order to convince
others to invest in the project.
As an entrepreneur it is always possible to try crowd funding without use of any platform, but
performing without a platform will be difficult mentioned (Rooseboom, 2014). Because the starting
phase of crowd funding is very fast, and brings many pressure are associated with it. (Baljeu, 2014)
Advice that the entrepreneurs also have promote via social media to find investors because people
are not always going automatically to the website of the platform. The most effective way to
promote is a movie where the entrepreneur explains the idea and the mission and the vision of the
company and product and why it gives extra value to the community the benefit of a movie is that it
gives the potential investors can have a perception of your idea. (Baljeu, 2014) Also mentioned that
the entrepreneur has to do a lot to get the money from the investors and that is not only posting
their business plan on the platform.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
23
Crowd funding for the crowd
The crowd can be seen as person who provides a loan for the company (Rooseboom, 2014). As the
crowd you can also give the loan as a gift this is mostly the case by a foundation (Rooseboom, 2014).
The biggest advantages for entrepreneur are that gives the crowd more interest than the bank. The
amount of money differs per location in Amsterdam the amount is higher of the crowd to invest in a
project than in the north of the Netherlands (de Grefte, 2014). The person behind the money differs
as well the big investors don't want to mentioned their names but small investors appreciate that
they are mentioned and want to share where they invest in.
Development of crowd funding
The last years is crowd funding growing instantly, it become interesting for a broad group of people
because it's something new. The growth is depending on the performance of crowd funding says
(Baljeu, 2014) but the expectations are high. (Rooseboom, 2014) Is expecting that is also grows in
other countries but it should be a country where the crowd is able to can effort investments in
projects. (de Grefte, 2014) Mentioned that banks also are interested in crowd funding, ABN AMRO
already started their own platform, which is called seeds. The opportunity for the bank is that they
can provide their knowledge about investments and offer there package for the entrepreneurs.
(de Grefte, 2014)Is expecting that the bank will grow in crowd funding and that their market share
will increase in the upcoming years. The banks will be in the upcoming year the main competitor of
crowd funding platforms. Another point what (de Grefte, 2014) mentioned is the bit coin, if people
pay all over the world whit this payment method, than all the payments will be online and then the
banks are not needed anymore. (Baljeu, 2014) Is expecting that the hospitality industry still is a risk
to invest, so big investments are expected with a combination of crowd funding and an investment
group. (Rooseboom, 2014) Expecting that crowd funding will be a booming business in the upcoming
years. This year (Rooseboom, 2014) is asked by the government of the Netherlands to organize the
day of the crowd funding in Friesland in September this year to make it more recognizable.
The launch of Kick starter in the Netherlands, can influences other parties because kickstarter.nl
gives the opportunity to find as well the crowd from abroad who can invest in a project for the crowd
funding in the hospitality industry has this no influences because most of the times is the crowd
from the neighborhood (Baljeu, 2014). Kickstarter.nl wants to cancel the selection procedure on their
platform which gives the opportunity that everybody can publish their idea, and has the opportunity
without a good plan to find investors for their project. This is a disadvantage for the crowd because
they don't know that it is not checked. (Baljeu, 2014) Mentioned: ''Time is money in the crowd
funding world, the money should tap faster''.

Chapter 4 discussion
In the discussion chapter original thinking is demonstrated. The literature review and the interviews
are compared with each other. First what is already found in the literature about crowd funding,
what is already known about crowd funding, the facts. Afterwards, the findings of the interviews. Are
those findings the same as what is found in the literature or did the researchers find something new.
When the researchers found something different there will be a discussion.
The literature review has combined crowd funding and crowd sourcing but not in relation to the
hospitality branch. The interviews are based on crowd funding and crowd sourcing in general but in
addition to that also on crowd funding in the hospitality branch.
The operation of crowd funding in the hospitality industry
Because the literature is based on crowd funding and crowd sourcing in general, there will be no
discussion about crowd funding in the hospitality industry. All information encountered in the
interviews about the operation of crowd funding in the hospitality industry is new information for
this study. This information is not found in the literature because little is known about crowd funding
in the hospitality industry.According to the interviews (Rooseboom, 2014) noticed that, with crowd
funding funds get removed from the community. This happens in small portions. Within the
Netherlands there are currently between 30 and 40 platforms. And every week new platforms are
launched. To get you project on such a platform a solid business plan must be written. In the
business plan should be written who you are as an entrepreneur, what your plan is, what you want,
and how the future will look into interest repayment. But the plan of the business is the most
important. And that is not only a plan about who you are as an entrepreneur, but also the
computation of the plan in the future. A new business need to be distinctive from others. It is very
difficult to get your business plan on a platform. Next to that (Rooseboom, 2014) mentioned that
when a visitor comes to a platform and see that 80% is already invested in the project then these
visitors will invest much faster in the project. But when a project is already three months on a
platform, but there is no money coming in, the visitors don’t want to invest. (Rooseboom, 2014)
advice is to make sure that the first 20,000 is already funded and therefore you are in good shape on
the platform. A project should be funded just as quickly as possible. In addition to that, the platform
is the intermediary that controls the flow of money. The platform manages the money first. Only if
the full amount is achieved it will go to the entrepreneur. The platform also provides the interest and
redemption. As an entrepreneur, you pay the interest and redemption back on the platform. After
which the platform controls everything further.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
25
(Baljeu, 2014) mentioned that just launching a business plan on a platform is not enough. In addition,
many more activities are needed to do in order to raise money and to come in touch with people for
your project. This indicates that it is not just a matter of placing a business plan.
(Rooseboom, 2014) as financial advisor can help to set up a solid business plan. And therefore there
will be a high success rate of the business plan. Almost every starting entrepreneur will take a
financial advisor to ensure that the business plan will go through the selection procedure. Because
writing a business plan for the second time is never good. Against that, (de Grefte, 2014) indicates
that the platform kickstarter wants to abolish the selection process of the business plans. This allows
many entrepreneurs to place their project easily on the kickstarter platform, while investors do not
know how well or bad the plan is devised. Probably many projects will not be achieved through the
abolition of the selection procedure. Thus the reliability of the platform will be inferior. (Baljeu, 2014)
adds to that, that in the hospitality estate agency more and more banks are reluctant to issue loans.
Especially for the hospitality industry because it is seen as a very risky industry. So if you do not have
enough equity, the banks are doing nothing for you. Therefore, crowd funding is a perfect alternative
financing method to still create a possibility for starting your own hospitality business.
According to (Gehrels, 2014) there are two different entrepreneurial forms, the first one is there is a
classic form of business and a crowd funding form of business. A “classic entrepreneur” has his own
idea and is self-willed and therefore do not want to share the investment with too many people. A
“crowd funding entrepreneur” is just the opposite, and therefore wants to share the investment with
as many people as possible. (de Grefte, 2014) sees more opportunities for crowd funding in nightlife.
(de Grefte, 2014) noticed that it is a waste if the entrepreneurs are not listening to what the people
want. Therefore (de Grefte, 2014) sees a great potential in the nightlife because there is an
atmosphere which depends on people who want to hear a certain type of music or do not want to
pay a lot for a particular drink. Then you get a place that is adapted to the needs of the people which
is very important in the nightlife. That will give a lot of great advantage in the nightlife. According to
(de Grefte, 2014) it can be much more specific. (de Grefte, 2014) is giving an example, as every
student of Stenden University invests 10 Euros. Then the entrepreneur will take care of three night's
party a week, next to that the investors can decide which DJs they want. Just the fact that these
people have done these investments ensures that the club will be full. And from the sales of the
drinks they will get ten times more revenue than the turnover which is achieved by the entrance.
This is the way each entrepreneur should do it. By removing the opinions of the crowd (crowd
sourcing) you're always the coolest company out there. To conclude, the growth of crowd funding in
the hospitality industry is enormous. (Rooseboom, 2014) mentioned that crowd funding has started
in the Netherlands in 2011. Every year crowd funding is growing in amounts of millions per half year.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
26
In 2011 it was 2.5 million in the following years it has been increased to 32 million, in 2014 to 80
million. The forecast for 2015 is 250 million. According to (Gehrels, 2014) crowd funding is seen as a
gap in the market because banks are very limited.
(de Grefte, 2014) adds that the future bitcoin can be radical thought about the future of crowd
funding because it is global and everyone can afford with bitcoins. Then crowd funding is played
entirely online. That results that banks no longer exist. So now banks do very smart to add crowd
funding in their supportive package. Crowd funding must take place in a country where money is
present. (Rooseboom, 2014) concluded that it is a booming business.
The connection between crowd funding and crowd sourcing
According to (van Wingerden & Ryan, 2011) crowd sourcing forms the basis of crowd funding. (Larralde & Schwienbacher, 2012) mentioned different business models for crowd funding namely
donations, and passive and active investments by the crowd.
These different
investors such as passive an active investments are also mentioned by the interviewees. For example,
(Baljeu, 2014) noticed that there are passive and active crowd funders. Passive investors are
investors that take place within the network of the company. These investors will invest money
because they award the entrepreneur to start a business. Active investors are generally unfamiliar
investors with a lot of knowledge about the hospitality industry and a lot of money. Therefore, they
want to give advice within the organization. They do not want to participate directly in the company,
but they want to think within the organization. According to (Rooseboom, 2014) the investors are
not the owners on paper but they are just providing a loan. (Rooseboom, 2014) notice that on the
platforms the entrepreneurs can make their investors attend of the considerations. In addition,
people can also invest in a project, but without receiving a consideration. Because only the
investment is important to them. According to (Baljeu, 2014) is crowd funding a good development
for the hospitality estate agency and therefore it is very important to provide their customers with
good information. Especially since it is still unknown for the most people. It is their job to provide the
right direction for their customers. Most people think it is an easy way to raise cash. Therefore
(Baljeu, 2014) as a hospitality estate agency should put a clear picture of crowd funding in the
hospitality sector that the entrepreneurs know exactly what it entails. When the overview is clear,
crowd funding will be used a lot more by hospitality entrepreneurs. The hospitality industry remains

27
a risky business. Therefore, it is often people with money or people who are interested in the
hospitality industries who are investing in a project. Starting entrepreneurs have often a lack of
equity which is less likely for the people to invest in the project compared with a large chain who
wants to try it also by using crowd funding or crowd sourcing. (Rooseboom, 2014) answered this
topic in a complete different way. (Rooseboom, 2014) gives an example of the Douwe Egberts Café in
Leeuwarden, where through crowd funding € 15.000 is financed. In addition to the interest they offer
different services for their guests. For example, they are giving the investors a name plate on the
wall. The greater the investment, the greater the sign. But with an even greater amount, the
investors will get their own stool with their name on it. On which others also allowed to sit on of
course. As a borrower you have to offer something extra in addition to the interest. The additional
advantage for this is that you make yourself known among the crowd. By offering this extra service
there will be a good word of mouth. Investors are proud of their investment and of the little extra
service they get from it. As a result, that they want to share it with other people. In addition to that
(de Grefte, 2014) notice that there are different types of investors for different projects. There are
big (rich) investors; these investors are usually from and around the Randstad environment or friends
of the hospitality industry platforms. According to the hospitality platforms it is an advantage
because it helps them to give more power to the projects to succeed them. The big investors invest
for the interest they get back from it. Next to that, there are investors who invest smaller amounts.
An entrepreneur can also thank these people in a different way. Such as in-kind. For this an
entrepreneur can draw different packages. The greater the investment, the greater the package. As
an entrepreneur this will be a smart move, it is a cheaper solution.
While the investor sees it as a positive sign, they do not check if the calculation for it is correct. In
that way the entrepreneur gets the profit in their own business which could be very interesting.
Furthermore, (Baljeu, 2014) noticed that there are passive and active crowd funders. Passive
investors are investors that take place within the network of the company. These investors will invest
money because they award the entrepreneur to start a business. Active investors are generally
unfamiliar investors with a lot of knowledge about the hospitality industry and a lot of money.
Therefore, they want to give advice within the organization. They do not want to participate directly
in the company, but they want to think within the organization. According to (Rooseboom, 2014) the
investors are not the owners on paper but they are just providing a loan. (Rooseboom, 2014) notice
that on the platforms the entrepreneurs can make their investors attend of the considerations. In
addition, people can also invest in a project, but without receiving a consideration. Because only the
investment is important to them. According to (de Grefte, 2014) payment in-kind can be done in
different ways. As already previous stated investors become their own seat within the company, a
nameplate on the wall, a dinner or lunch voucher or a coat rack with its own name. This way of

thanking will deliver a good guest loyalty. The best target for crowd funding in the hospitality
industry is taking investors out of the area because then you create immediately a good name of the
business that is known by everyone. Then the people will come to you. If you want a fast
achievement of your project, big investors need to be attracted.
General advantages and disadvantages of crowd funding
There are several advantages and disadvantages of crowd funding in general. According to (de
Grefte, 2014) the advantages and disadvantages depend very much on the entrepreneur of the
business because they can actually determine what they want to explain to the investors.
Advantages
According to (Rooseboom, 2014) there are several advantages of crowd funding in general. First,
crowd funding creates a good customer loyalty, because investors are involved in the project. Next to
that, it is a good alternative to banks, because people get a lot more interest than what they get on
their bank account, this may be one of the reasons why people like to invest. In addition to that,
banks do not give loans due to the strict rules of the European bank, crowd funding is the perfect
alternative financing method for entrepreneurs. Furthermore, (de Grefte, 2014) mentioned that the
biggest difference and advantage of crowd funding in comparison with regular financing methods is
when people start investing, they are also ambassadors for the company, they get the association
with the company, and in the hospitality industry it is very important that every week an investor
comes along with his friends and/or family and show them where they invested in. It allows for more
connection with the audience. Investors sometimes feel themselves even a little bit the owner of the
company even though they are legally not.
They feel very involved in the company, for this it is very important for the entrepreneur to keep in
touch with the investors. Moreover, the entrepreneur gets a commitment with the investors which
are making the customer base growing. Through the customer base the entrepreneur will get
hopefully more input so they can make their operations optimal. Word of mouth is the best
marketing and that always remains, and that is what crowd funding is always needed. To conclude,
according to all the interviewees the PR concerning crowd funding is incredibly good.
Disadvantages
According to (Rooseboom, 2014) a disadvantage can be that the selection procedures for the various
platforms are very strict. This is because the platforms cannot afford that projects are not fully
funded. Therefore, the requirements are so high. They want to have the best projects on their
platforms. Next to that, crowd funding is still too little known among the general public. In addition
to that, according to all the interviewees if the project is not fully funded within the period, the
project will be canceled.

Advantages and disadvantages of the entrepreneur.
According to (van Wingerden & Ryan, 2011) crowd sourcing forms the basis of crowd funding.

investment is important to them.
Advantages
According to (Gehrels, 2014), (Rooseboom 2014), (the Grefte, 2014) and (Baljeu, 2014) the main
advantage of an entrepreneur is that crowd funding is the perfect financing alternative to start a new
business. For this, the bank is no longer needed. In addition, it provides an excellent PR. What creates
customer loyalty. (Baljeu, 2014) mentioned that if the entrepreneur is able to bring the business plan
in a convincingly way it will be easier to start their own business. (de Grefte, 2014) noticed that, the
risk is worn by several people. That also depends a little bit from how it is financed. Investors may
bring debt under the companies. Then the entrepreneur is still ultimately responsible. And the
entrepreneur determined what is going to be done with that money. The only obligation is to keep
the contact with the investor in a good way and of course the repayment. Next to that, (de Grefte,
2014) mentioned that he entrepreneurs with good ideas rather have the chance to be allowed to
continue with their plan. And those are especially ideas that where many people is behind and not
only one such as the bank. Furthermore, crowd funding is an easier way for the entrepreneur to start

a company. The entrepreneurs have a commitment with the investors. Next to that, there is a
committee that looks at the business plan so that the entrepreneur has a greater chance of success.
The entrepreneur not does it alone but also with the investors who ultimately will form a kind of
guest group. Those investors will tell their friends and family about the company (word of mouth).
Research by (the Grefte, 2014) shows that there is no investor who is not secretly a little proud about
their investment and this will result in a word of mouth advertising.
Those investors will be the ambassadors of the project. People who are going to make advertising
because they feel that they are doing it for themselves. To conclude, according to (Baljeu, 2014) what
a lot has happened in crowd funding is that entrepreneurs start to contact their own personal
environment, their own friends who go to support their projects. This can be an advantage if the
entrepreneur has a very large network.
Disadvantages
According to (Rooseboom, 2014) and (de Grefte, 2014) the entrepreneur has to come up with a good
plan otherwise the project will not easily get on the platform. (de Grefte, 2014) mentioned if the
project is not fully funded, the people who have invested in the project come to know that it was not
good enough or that the entrepreneur did not good enough their best for it. And then they are not
easily inclined to invest in the same entrepreneur again. Furthermore, (Baljeu, 2014) noticed that the
entrepreneur has to pay more interest than if they borrow money from the bank, and therefore the
repayment will take longer. Many entrepreneurs think too easily about launching a project on a
platform. Offline should happen a lot, turn on your network, approaching investors. Just making a
business plan is not enough. In addition, an entrepreneur needs to do a lot more activities to raise
money and to come in touch with the investors for the project. To conclude, (de Grefte, 2014)
noticed that investors will interfere with the business. That's the downside of the engagement.
Because they have invested, they also want to give their opinions.
Advantages and disadvantages of the investor.
There are several advantages and disadvantages in crowd funding for the investors.
Advantages
(Rooseboom, 2014) and (de Grefte, 2014) mentioned that the investors receive more interest than if
they bring their money to the bank. Next to that, (de Grefte, 2014) mentioned that the investors are
not required to pay at one time a lot of money and therefore they don’t have to take a big risk. To
conclude, (Baljeu, 2014) mentioned that an advantage of the investors is that they can buy their own
equity. Then the investors will participate in the company and they can also give their input in the
company. The investor will have a kind of shares of the company which can be an advantage for the
investor. In this case, the entrepreneur has a whole other responsibility and the entrepreneur cannot

31
decide everything alone. That can be a disadvantage for the business because the business owner
has less freedom. But then again, the investors have a lot of experience and can provide advice in a
very good way. It is positive that the investors can support the entrepreneur by giving a lot of advice,
and that they are likely to take a very large network to the company. Because at the time that such
investors are excited about the company the investor will contact their network. And then likely
many more people will come to the company.
Disadvantages
According to (de Grefte, 2014) there is a greater risk attached to investing in a crowd funding project
than when investors put their money on their bank account. Although they are currently wondering
about what is a greater risk. At the moment that it does not go well with the business the investors
are not getting their money. At that time, the hospitality platforms who launched the project will be
discredited. Because investors believe that the information which was placed on the platforms are
not successful. Then the investors invest less and the whole system of the platform will fail.
The legal aspects of crowd funding within the Netherlands
Basically, according to (de Grefte, 2014) the entrepreneurs pay more interest in crowd funding to the
investors than they have to pay if they have a loan at the bank. These are higher margins. It is
between the 8% and 9% because there are so many projects succeed. Ultimately you should pay back
more as an entrepreneur. But as an entrepreneur you can also pay back in-kind and therefore not
only in cash. (de Grefte, 2014) is giving an example, if the entrepreneur will give away a dinner
voucher for 50 Euros it will cost the entrepreneur only 23 Euros. With this the entrepreneur will gain
a lot of profit. At the same time it will grow a kind of stream of people within the company which is
also very important. By looking at the hard numbers, it is not even advantageous for the
entrepreneur. But the investor earns more money with crowd funding than when they put their
money on their bank account. Furthermore (Rooseboom, 2014) mentioned that a company which is
funded through crowd funding can use all forms of enterprise, it is only depending on the major of
the enterprise. There is also a possibility that a larger investor becomes part of a BV. This means that
the investor also gets shares. This is only possible in a BV as a company form. The crowd is not
owners within the company, and can been seen as an individuals who have invest a loan. The strict
rules are mainly done through the platforms itself because they only want successful and reliable
projects so that the platform will not have a negative reputation. In addition to that (Rooseboom,
2014) noticed that the AFM monitors the financial situation of the company. Not everyone has an
AFM license yet but there are coming more and more. If you are going to start a crowd funding
project, you have to search for a platform that has an AFM license. That is very important. Today,

Hospitality estate agency in the crowd funding industry and other general information
In the literature review is not searched for what kind of effect crowd funding has on the hospitality
estate-agency. This is explored in the interviews, and therefore the researchers have found new
additional information. Therefore, no discussion can take place.
most of the platforms have it. It's a piece of certainty what they can offer. Another point is that if you
are above a certain capacity on the bank you have to pay 1.2% tax. According to (Baljeu, 2014), there
are different platforms who can put the entrepreneur in the right direction. Especially the hospitality
crowd funding platforms. These platforms assigned a personal account to each entrepreneur.
Therefore they are giving the entrepreneur the assurance that they will help in the first few years
with the legal components. Also coaching from the platforms is required. (Baljeu, 2014) mentioned
that it is very important to pay attention to good supervision.
When choosing a platform lots of entrepreneurs have no idea regarding the legal aspects. Therefore
the entrepreneur needs good advice from the platforms. Because the entrepreneur is assuming a
liability. At the moment that the entrepreneur has little knowledge about these things it will be a
pitfall for them. The precise legal aspects are being examined at the moment by ADHOC.
Hospitality estate agency in the crowd funding industry and other general information
(Baljeu, 2014) from the hospitality estate agency ADHOC are specified in the hospitality industry.
They mainly do the hospitality properties such as hotels, restaurants, cafes, etc. Therefore they
mainly do the sales and rentals as well as appraisals of properties and investments. ADHOC is
currently trying to explore how they can support their customers about the new phenomenon of
crowd funding. Because crowd funding is now beginning to grow more within the Netherlands it is
not a well-known phenomenon yet for their customers as well as for their own business.
According to (Baljeu, 2014) hospitality entrepreneurs are not good aware of crowd funding. They
wonder for what it can be used, what kind of amounts you can retrieve from it, how it works with the
redemption and the interest and what kind of against performance it has. Therefore, ADCHOC is
writing a manual to provide a good advice with the information about crowd funding to their
customers. When ADHOC has encountered all the information about crowd funding they can give
advice to their customers which can result in an enlargement of multiple transactions for them. The
purpose of ADHOC by offering advice of crowd funding is the increasing of processing of multiple
transactions.
Currently ADHOC cannot continue with their customers because they have no money to start a
business. But if ADHOC can advice their customers the alternative of crowd funding it will bring them
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
33
more transactions. It would be a great advantage for ADHOC if crowd funding will be better known in
the Netherlands.
ADHOC see different companies who starting a business through crowd funding. Especially small
businesses. Large companies such as hotels, are up to now less in the crowd funding sector. The most
common entrepreneurs who want to open their business with the use of crowd funding are
entrepreneurs of small companies. Additionally, there are some entrepreneurs who already have one
or two companies. And therefore, they are able to show their investors what they already achieved
with their existing companies.
Furthermore (Baljeu, 2014) mentioned that there are different types of crowd funding. What is
mostly encountering in the hospitality industry is still called the debt that the investors want to fund.
In this way the entrepreneur continue to be responsible for the management and everything what
happened within the organization so the entrepreneurs only get the money from the investors.
That's what mostly occurs in the hospitality industry. Next to that people are investing their own
equity. Therefore the people give shares and they also have something to say about your business.
This is increasingly growing.
However, the shorter the duration of the project will take, the higher the chance that the project is
funded successful.
Time pressure is very important according to (Baljeu, 2014). If money is not within a certain time on
the platform the entire investment cannot continue. It's a principle of all or nothing. Therefore, time
pressure is very important. An entrepreneur should not have too much time needed to attract the
investors. It needs to be brief and short. Because if investors see that it still runs a year, then the time
pressure is less short. But if it's only a month or two months running and it has brought a lot of
money than the investors have the idea that it can be fast, short, and that the business is in the near
future. Most importantly, the storytelling, time pressure and communication. Therefore you need to
be very active in both as offline and online to reach the potential investors.
At the time when the project is launched on the platform, the promotion can start. Social media is a
good example. The entrepreneur has to search for investors and approaching those investors. After
that the investors will visit the platform where the project is launched. Next to that, giving the people
an image of the project is an important factor. This can be done by making use of a movie about the
business plan. In addition to social media, offline marketing must also be created.
The risk of crowd funding on banks
(Rooseboom, 2014) mentioned that, banks are doing virtually nothing. Previously, there was still
money in the bank and now there will be no more money from the bank. From the bank, you get
nothing. That's why you see that banks are getting richer and this is because banks have more rules
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
34
to which they must comply now. It was imposed by the European Bank. They said, you need so much
cash laying before you can finance again. When the banks have enough money they can fund again
but it takes a long time. The banks were too far behind. So they just need to make sure that they
have more money or less loans repaid so that they obtain new money and can do their financing
again. In case of this situation there are several alternative ways to earn money. Crowd funding is
one of the most important financing alternatives. 75% to 90% of the work of (Rooseboom, 2014) as a
financial advisor is about crowd funding.
Next to that, crowd funding is a great competitor towards the banks. People have a little trust in
banks and therefore they don't want to spend any more money to the bank. But now you see that
banks also start with crowd funding such as the ABN. Thus, banks and platforms become competitors
to each other (Rooseboom, 2014). According to (Rooseboom, 2014) the investment of the project
need to be paid back. But in addition, there must also be paid an interest between 8% and 9%. This
depends on the platform. If the investor has paid an amount as a gift then it doesn’t has to be paid
back.
(de Grefte, 2014) sees the chances of banks such as the ABN become bigger in crowd funding.
According to (de Grefte, 2014), banks can play an important and helpful role. With this they are doing
what they are supposed to do. Having knowledge of money and giving advice to their customers.
They also have business packages which is also a great advantage for the banks to give advice.
(de Grefte, 2014) mentioned that, the banks are growing in crowd funding which will result that they
become competitors towards the crowd funding platforms. At the moment everyone is hating the
banks and therefore the platforms will continue to grow and the banks are growing less. Within the
banks there is no access for out standers about what happened with the money, what money is
really there, what they spend and what they do not spend. And that causes for the same time that
there is a great deal of sympathy for crowd funding. The investors are willing to invest in your project
because they trust the entrepreneur and the business plan. According to (de Grefte, 2014) the banks
are late with implementing crowd funding in their business. When they find out that crowd funding is
a good financial alternative they will start with this alternative as well. While there are many existing
platforms that are much better known for the financial alternative crowd funding.
The risk of crowd funding on banks.
According to the literature review there was no literature found on the impact of crowd funding on
banks. The following information comes from all the interviews and therefore, newly information has
been found. Therefore, no discussion can take place.

Chapter 4.1 The limitation paragraph
In this paragraph will be explained what the research has revealed and what it couldn’t reveal.
Research has been done into the literature and in taking of interviews with experts of the field. Since
crowd funding is increasingly growing it is easier to collect more information from interviews. The
following has been found in the studies: how crowd funding works in the hospitality industry,
benefits of crowd funding compared to other financing methods, disadvantages of crowd funding
compared to other financing methods, the connection between crowd funding and crowd sourcing,
advantages and disadvantages for the entrepreneur and the investor, developing of crowd funding in
the upcoming years, the influence of crowd funding to other financing methods, how a crowd funded
company has to deal with their investors, and the legal aspects of crowd funding. In addition, there
can be a lot more researched about crowd funding in the hospitality industry due to the fact that
crowd funding is currently increasingly growing. The following things can be very interesting in
broadening this study. Research can be done to, what the crowd is paying on average for a project
within the Netherlands, what the most common profile is in the crowd funding industry, the Dutch
regulations for crowd funding, and an interview with an entrepreneur of a crowd funded project
about how a project has been developed, how the process goes after a few years and when the
payback period is finished.
Chapter 4.2 Recommendation paragraph
Crowd funding in the hospitality industry is increasingly growing in the upcoming years. Therefore,
there can be extracted much more information from this research than what has been found so far.
The recommendation that can be used for this study is recommendations for further research. This
recommendation is particularly useful when the research project is part of a bigger project. This
research project indicates that there is a perspective for interesting in further research due to the
fact that there is much more to discover about crowd funding. Crowd funding is the perfect financing
alternative for young starting entrepreneurs, because banks are not spending loans. Young starting
entrepreneurs can easily start their own business with crowd funding.

Interview Henk Rooseboom ''Crowd funding in the hospitality industry 26.05.14
zichzelf begonnen.
exact dezelfde dingen doen.
Banken doen nagenoeg niks.
jullie weer mogen financieren.
Dus
banken doen gewoon heel weinig.
Crowd funding is
funding.
In kleine partjes.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
39
Voorwaarden crowd funding:
Kosten crowd funding
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
40
project.
Ondernemingsvormen in crowd funding
In elke
provincie moet daarvoor iets gebeuren.
funding?
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
41
Voordelen/nadelen in crowd funding ten opzichte van andere financiering methodes
Voordeel: De PR er omheen vind Henk erg goed. Je krijgt een stuk klantenbinding. Geweldig
over.
platform alles daarvoor verder regelt.
mensen gaan mee doen.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
42
zij hierin willen investeren.

Interview Sjoerd Gehrels “Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry” 19.05.14
Crowd funding in de algemeenheid

Zo ja, waarom in Crowd funding?
investeerder is.
optie.
heel beperkt.

Interview Lisan Baljeu, ADHOC Makelaars ''Crowd funding in the hospitality industry'
27.05.14
heel risico volle branche.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
46
over.
plaatsen.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
47
Ja, we
scriptie bezig was.
project is binnen 4 maanden gefinancierd.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
48
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
49
benaderen. En daarvoor is social media erg belangrijk. Wie maakt er tegenwoordig geen gebruik van
social media.
idee/ondernemingsplan werkt heel goed.
gaat doen.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
50
In principe nemen
anders advies moeten vragen.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
51
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
52
Tijdsdruk is heel belangrijk.
Daarom is
tijdsdruk heel belangrijk.

Interview Abel de Grefte ''Crowd funding in the hospitality industry'' 04.06.14
is.
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
54
Crowd funding in the Hospitality Industry - Renco Schipper and Metske Kingma - Stenden University of Applied Sciences.
55
gasten groep gaan vormen.

belangrijk is.

Daarom is
McDonald's of
verschillende vormen gaan ontstaan.
Zoals horeca crowd Nederlands en crowd about now.

doorberekend is.
Omdat investeerders jou vertrouwen in jou
risico volle ondernemer was.
